Crocodile and Cassowary: Religious Art of the Upper Sepik River, New Guinea
New York: Museum of Primitive Art, 1971. Paperback. Very good. 112 p. 22 x 27 cm. 1 map and 189 b&w drawings and photos. Pictorial card covers with minor wear to corners, tiny bump in bottom of front cover. Picasso litho bookplate from library of Nelson A. Rockefeller inside front cover. While earning a degree at Dartmouth College, Nelson Rockefeller become interested in the arts. Many of his school breaks were spent touring art galleries with his mother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, who was a serious collector of impressionist and post-impressionist art. As his interest in different forms of art developed, Nelson began what would become one of the largest and most impressive private art collections in the world. Picasso was probably Rockefeller's favorite artist, hence this bookplate. The use of bookplates, like the love of reading, is often passed on from one generation to the next, and Nelson learned about the use of bookplates from his parents. His father was John D. Rockefeller, Jr., famous philanthropist.
