Dark Bridwell $ The Wild Ones
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company/ Pyramid Books, 1931. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Dark Bridwell, Coming out of a remote world, for reasons dark to all who knew him, Jed Bridwell, mighty and fearless and brutal, but infinitely tender of heart, goes with his child-wife to an outpost on the last frontier, to a great sunken basin ,mountain-walled and river-swept. This is a story, my personal favorite Vardis Fisher novel, about the last frontier in America at the turn of the 20th century in idaho. Much like the hovel that the author was born in and just a bit earlier. The hardcover Book is in very fine + condition with a tiny bump to bottom of spine. The priced jacket (2.50) is in very fine + condition. both book and jacket are the best you can get. Also included in this wonderful package is a first edition paperback titled The Wild Ones which was the name given to Dark Bridwell when it came out in paperback in 1958. Paperback is mint. Both copies are housed in a specially constructed box bound in green and brown Morocco.Spine of box has four raised bands and the titles are gilt over red leather with gold rules. Fore edge is untrimmed and top has perfect black stain. The book is inscribed " To Ingle Barr, The 'Bridwell' place will ( underlined) go under water when a spendthrift congress is able to shake the Eisenhower hand off the purse strings" Signed Vardis Fisher, Jan 11, 1959. ( Sounds a lot like today). A rare and wonderful collectible package.
