A Handful of Darkness.
London: Rich & Cowan, 1955 - Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine in silver. With the dust jacket priced 10/6. Partial tanning to endpapers. An excellent copy in the very gently rubbed jacket with faint soiling to the rear panel, and price-clipped. First edition, first impression, in the first issue binding and jacket, of the author's first short story collection. This is a review copy and is unusually price-clipped, perhaps due to the publisher's pre-publication uncertainty about the pricing. The first issue was released in a blue binding with the spaceship logo blocked on the spine, and the jacket does not list World of Chance (the later issue was in orange paper-covered boards, and with World of Chance listed on the jacket). With a review slip from the publisher laid in, with the price handwritten as 10/6 and the publication date as 15 August 1955, and also including a sticker giving notice of Rich & Cowan's new address at Stratford Place, W1. The British publisher Rich & Cowan approached Dick through his literary agent Scott Meredith with the idea of a collection of short stories in late 1953. The title was not published in the US until the Gregg Press edition of 1978. Stephens 19a. [Attributes: First Edition]
