A Night to Remember (SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY)

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1955. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5 5/8 X 8 3/8 Inches. 209 PP. Stated "First Edition" signed by Walter Lord to friend who is mentioned in the acknowledgements of the book! Signed "For Ralph Whitney, with many, many thanks for all your help and suggestions and holding my hand while I sweated over this book. For more formal thanks - see p. 183! Walter Lord". Accompanied by a laid-in Christmas card signed by Walter Lord to Mr. Whitney with a copy of a book review of this book that Whitney did for the newspapers. Sure enough, page 183 features the printed "thank you" to Ralph Whitney, that Mr. Whitney has apparently underlined in ink. Original blue and yellow cloth binding with Titanic schematic endpapers. DJ retains original price of $3.50 on front flap. A bit of smudging and foxing. DJ worn a bit at edges and folds. Slight chipping to the head of the spine. Overall, an exceptional association copy from the collection of a man who truly had an influence (according to the printed thank you on page 183) over the content of the book.

[Broadside]: The Poets' Theatre presents a return engagement of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake in Scenes Arranged by Mary Manning

Cambridge [Massachusetts]: The Poets' Theatre Workshop. [1955]. Broadside illustrated in color on stiff card. Measuring 10.25" x 13.75". Two incorrectly used printed apostrophes are whited-out by hand, some horizontal creases, and a small, light stain, near very good. Poster for Manning's stage adaptation of Joyce's novel that Manning arranged in 1955 as The Voice of Shem. Manning was a regular cast member at the Abbey Theatre, a playwright, and was a filmmaker. After a distinguished career in Ireland she moved to Boston where she served as managing director of the Idler Theatre at Radcliffe College in the 1940s and was one of the founding members of the Poet's Theatre in Cambridge in 1950. The poster notes that tickets were on sale at the Mandrake Book Store on Boyleston Street in Cambridge. Interesting period-style illustration of a beer quaffer blathering over the cantilevered corpse of Finnegan. The original performances were in April of 1955; this return engagement ran for little more than a week in late November and early December 1955. OCLC locates no copies of the poster, although copies of Manning's adaptation in book form published by the Harvard University Press are plentiful. We found a black and white rendition of the poster image online on a French blog but could find no illuminating information there. Presumably these posters would have been extremely ephemeral. .

Just about Fine, square, tight and unmarked (front hinge seamlessly repaired), but end papers stained from binder's glue and title page inscribed; in a Fine, bright jacket, only very lightly rubbed. St. James Guide to Crime & Mystery Writers, p. 899. Scarce. "Nowadays the credit (or more often the blame) for the 'Yellow Peril' school of mystery thriller is placed squarely upon the shoulders of Sax Rhomer. Rhomer had the talent and good fortune to create a near-mythic figure [who first appeared in "The Zayat Kiss," published in the October 1912 issue of The Story-Teller magazine] who embodied all the fancied villainy of the East combined with all the science of the West: . . . Dr. Fu-Manchu, the yellow peril incarnate . . . [With his late] series of five novels about Sumuru, Rohmer revived the Fu Manchu formula, but featured a "carefully de-ethnicized female villain."         Kay Thompson's Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown Ups

Simon and Schuster, 1955. Quarto. The pullout (pages 13-16) is present but detached (bright with no tears). Original decorated cloth; original dust jacket. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of the original Eloise -- a work initially meant for adults (its re-release in 1969 was aimed at children). This book spawned three further tales of the girl who lives on "the tippy-top floor" of the Plaza hotel (and one posthumous book). Thompson's goddaughter, Liza Minelli, has been cited as a possible model for Eloise, as has Thompson herself. Laid in is a slip correcting text on p. 50 -- "Lily Dache" to "Coco Chanel." Cloth with some light wear at ends of spine, slight toning, a few old tape adhesions; jacket spine panel lacking, some chipping, inner flaps detached but present.
