        An Essay on Typography

London: Sheed & Ward, 1931. Gill, Eric. Octavo. iv, 121 pp. First edition. One of 500 copies signed by Eric Gill and Rene Hague and printed by Hague & Gill. This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the colophon. Illustrated with twenty-five figures, including ten type specimens and four illustrations from wood engravings by Gill. According to the bibliography, there were twenty-five copies specially bound by Donald Attwater in full Welsh sheepskin tooled in blind. The present copy appears to be one of those specially bound copies, as it is in full sheepskin with blind tooling, though with very subtle differences from the bibliographical description. Evan Gill notes, for instance, that "the blind tooling on front and back was not uniform in design" and that on the present copy is uniform. He also notes that GILL TYPOGRAPHY reads downward on the spine, where here, the author's name is not on the spine. Slight fading to spine, very minor bump to spine head, minute scuffs to soft leather, as is typical of sheepskin. A fine copy, nevertheless, of a seminal work on typography, in a rarely seen binding state. (Gill 21).

Paris: H. Piazza, 1931. 184, [2] pagine. 23x17 cm.Brossura editoriale molto ben conservata, con qualche leggera macchiolina presso l'angolo superiore della copertina anteriore. Interno ottimo.

        Ljudi Govore [People speak]

PETROVICH, Rastko: Ljudi Govore [People speak]. Beograd: Geca Kon 1931. 8° (13,3 x 20 cm). 140, [2] p. Original publisher's wrappers with b/w photomontage front cover. First edition and a declared example of Petrovich's „automatic writing" inspired by Surrealism which was at its climax in Belgrade in the beginning of the 1930s. The author writes in his foreword: „I jotted down the first words that came to my mind in a bistro that very moment, on a piece of paper bought at the tobacconist's across the street". Rastko Petrovich (1898-1949), who between 1935-49 also settled in the the US (Chicago, Washington DC) as part of the Yugoslavian Corps Diplomatique, is considered to be one of the most gifted and authentic modernist Serbian writers, artists and photographers and his contributions can be found in all major avant-garde periodicals and other publications at that time (e.g. »Putevi« (Paths, 1922/23)»Svedočanstva« (Testimonies, 1924-25), Almanac »Nemoguće« (The Impossible, 1931), »Nadrealizam danas i ovde« (Surrealism here and now) 1931-32). Between 1921-31 he also had 4 books published that are seen as core publications of Serbian Expressionism and Surrealism, one of them being the preceding. Furthermore Petrovich's striking photomontage cover for this book is one of the very few examples of this technique in the realm of the Serbian avant-garde. Bottom of spine professionally restaurated, back side of cover with little ink staining; front paper with contemporary handwritten, dated and signed dedication or owner's remark, one stamp of a Belgrade school and another stamp of the publisher Geca Kon; otherwise inside very fine, printed on machine-mould paper. Vloemans 129, 217; cit. Todić, Nemoguće, 263-64.

An English Lady in Chinese Turkestan.

London, Ernest Benn Ltd., [1931]. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth; pp. [vii], 236; sketch map and four photographic plates; cloth a little marked, front free endpaper replaced; occasional spotting to text only, a good copy of a very rare book. First edition of an important title on the Great Game in Central Asia, and a wonderful description of life in Kashgar and surroundings, now in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, in China's far west on the Silk Road. 'Catherina Theodora, second daughter of James Borland of Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire. She had never travelled before but revealed an exemplary ability to 'make do', hosting numerous Russian and Chinese diplomatic guests as well as any passing travellers from home' (ODNB). 'Col Francis Younghusband was the first British Resident in Kashgar, and from 1891 George Macartney (no relation to the first Ambassador to China in 1793) replaced Younghusband and stayed there until his retirement at the end of the First World War. One of the most important duties of the British Political Resident at Kashgar was to send periodic news reports or fortnightly diaries, channelled through the Government of India, to London. The contents of these reports and diaries range from the Resident's daily dealings with the locals to political uprisings in the region. In the countries surrounding India's frontiers, there was little secret intelligence of a direct military kind to be acquired. What the British Government needed to know was mainly political - Russian movement in the region, local events, which tribes might be plotting to overthrow some ruler and what might be the effect on the border tribes. The Political Resident at Kashgar, George Macartney, who was fully bilingual, managed to establish an amicable rapport with Chinese Taotai (a provincial administrator) as well as with the Russian Consul at Kashgar. Through his local contacts, he was well informed of political shifts and likely repercussions within or beyond the borders. In general, it could be said that, like every British Political Agent of that period, Macartney ran a local information or intelligence service, which Russians might have called a spy network, but it tended to be a very informal and parochial affair' (British Library, Chinese Turkestan: British presence, online).

Andersen, Meyer & Company Limited of China. Its History: its Organization Today, Historical and Descriptive Sketches Contributed by Some of the Manufacturers it Represents. March 31, 1906 to March 31, 1931

Shanghai: Kelly and Walsh, 1931. Hardcover. Very good condition. A presentation copy of a scarce volume celebrating the 25th anniversary of a Danish engineering company that brought western technology to the industrial development of 1900s China, and secured the exclusive right to represent General Electric in China. Andersen Meyer first worked on a joint basis with an American import export firm based in Shanghai named Fearon, Daniel & Company, to set up an engineering firm in China. In 1907 it won the right to represent G. E. in China and in 1908 secured its first large contract with the Mukden Electric Light Works. The firm quickly diversified from the construction and engineering fields to partner with American makers of textile machinery and equipment, selling the first cotton mill entirely equipped with American machinery. It also expanded into power plant machinery, electrical machinery including Xray equipment, plumbing and heating equipment, agricultural machinery, and drugs and chemicals. Offices were located in Tientsin, Peiping, Harbin, Mukden, Hankow, Tsingtao, Tsinan, Hong Kong and Canton. Meyer Andersen represented the major American manufacturers of the day, from G. E., American Radiator, International Harvester, Masonite, Parke Davis (once America's oldest and largest drug maker), Sherwin Williams and more. This is a signed presentation copy, to a long term business associate who was the principal of a company acquired by Pittsburgh Coal Co., from the founder Vilhelm Meyer, and signed below Meyer's frontispiece portrait: "F. L. Robbins, with thanks for your long and loyal cooperation. From your old friend, Vilhelm Meyer. March 1931". The first section is written in English; the second section in Chinese, translated and prepared by Kuang Chao Lee, with a special title page and separate pagination with Chinese numerals. The volume is impressive for its wide array of b&w photographic illustrations in all the areas in which the company operated, including staff portraits, showrooms of the various departments, interior views of factories including cotton & silk mills, power plants, lighting of Shanghai buildings, railway and locomotive equipment and workshops, and bridge construction. There is an unusual double spread photograph of the Bund in Shanghai with 29 numbered buildings and a chart below listing all the heating supplies provided by Andersen Meyer to the prominent landmark buildings all along the waterfront! (pp92-93). The many images in a broad range of fields provide a vivid sense of the tremendous impact of western techonology on China's industrial growth. In 1934 Vilhelm Meyer died, and the ownership of the company passed to its main American partner, General Electric. In 1949, following the founding of the People's Republic of China, many international firms in Shanghai were nationalized, including Andersen Meyer. By 1950 it was completely Chinese controlled. Large 4to, 247pp; 134pp, frontispiece, b&w photographic illustrations (including portraits of staff, maps). With the book plate of F. L. Robbins at the front paste down. Dark blue stamped buckram covers, title in English at front cover, in Chinese at rear cover, original titles in yellow, somewhat dulled. We located four copies, at the National Library of Singapore, National Library of Australia, the University of Hong Kong, and Stanford. OCLC: 123199443. Libraries Australia ID 5041194.

        Remote Places

London: Duckworth, 1931. A first edition, first printing published by Duckworth in 1931. A very good book with a neat former owner's name to the front free endpaper and a little off-setting to the endpapers also. There is a little foxing to the page edges and a touch of bleeding from the boards onto the bottom edge of the early pages of the book. In the VERY RARE dust wrapper priced at 10/6 (as called for) on the spine. The wrapper is complete apart from some very minor wear at the head and tail of the spine with a touch of loss not affecting any lettering. Waugh's early travel book about Africa, the inspiration and source of his comic 'Scoop'. Illustrated, with folding map. Very uncommon in the dust wrapper.

Preferred Business Real Estate Locations of the Principal Cities of the United States and Canada

Springfield, Mass: Nirenstein's National Realty Map Co, 1931. Hardcover. Very good + condition. While most real estate atlases show major buildings and landmarks from a bird's eye view, this unique Atlas identifies businesses on every block, at the street level, and it does so on the eve of the great Wall Street Crash of 1929! This was an invaluable guide to potential investors and store owners of the day. Every small business, not just the large commercial enterprises and hotels, is recorded on the maps. Each map also provides a wealth of other information on each building in each block, including the property owner name, city assessed land valuation and building valuation, area of each lot, and building heights and construction materials. In the New York city map which includes Grand Central, you can see that the terminal also was home to the Terminal Drug Store, the Savarin Restaurant, Wilson Bros. Men's Clothes, Ligetts Drug Store, the St. Regis Sandwich Shop, Nedlicks Soda and the Arcadia Luncheonette. North of Grand Central is St. Bartholomew's Church with Cathedral High School, the Waldorf Astoria is marked "under construction" (it wasn't completed until 1931), the Park Lane Hotel building includes a Doubleday Book Shop, and the Chrysler Building (Cooper Union recorded as owner) houses many businesses including hardware shops, confectioners and Roger's Barber Shop. The city maps are: Akron, Albany NY, Allentown PA, Altoona PA, Atlanta, Birmingham, Canton OH, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbia S. C., Columbus, Dayton OH, Denver, Des Moines, Detroit, Elizabeth NJ, Erie PA, Fall River Mass, Evansville Ind, Fitchburg Mass., Gardner Mass., Flint MI, Fort Wayne IN, Grand Rapids, Greenfield Mass., Harrisburg PA, Hollywood, Houston, Indianapolis, Johnstown PA, Kansas City, Lawrence Mass., Knoxville, Long Beach Cal., Los Angeles, Louisville (with an updated map of Louisville for 1953 loosely inserted), Madison, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Montreal, Nashville, New Orleans, New York City (16 total), Niagara Falls, Norfolk VA, North Adams, Northampton Mass., Oakland, Omaha, Ottawa, Pasadena, Pawtucket, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Portland, Reading PA, Richmond VA, Rochester NY, Sacramento, St. Louis, San Antonio, Schenectady NY, San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Francisco (2 maps), Scranton, So. Manchester CT, Seattle, Spokane, Springfield OH, Stamford, St. Paul, Syracuse, Tacoma, Toledo, Toronto, Trenton, Topeka, Tulsa, Vancouver BC, Waterbury CT, Westfield MA, Wilkes Barre PA, Wilmington DE, Yonkers NY, and Youngstown OH. The maps were compiled from actual surveys and official plans, by Cobb, Beesley & Miles, civil engineers under the personal direction of Nathan Nirenstein. An elephant folio, maroon leatherette cloth, a total of 88 cities on 85 leaves (some of the leaves are stuck together and therefore have been counted as one). The Atlas is bound at the left side, and folds open to maps measuring 29 wide by 22 1/4", each with leather index tabs at foredges of leaves. The maps are on wrapped over leaves so that they are double elephant folio size. The Atlas housed in its original box wrapper 18 x 23", with large color illustration of city skyline laid down at front cover, title below illustration printed in red and white. Gilt title at spine, "Nirenstein's Real Estate Atlas", gilt a bit faded; edges a bit rubbed. Legend laid down at rear paste down. The maps remarkably bright and clean, no marks or tears at edges.         How to Write

How to Write, Stein, Gertrude. Published by Plain Edition, 1931. First Edition of which only 1,000 copies were printed. 16mo up to 6½" tall. 395pp. Grey paper over lighter grey paper-covered boards, printed paper spine label. Issued without dust jacket . Shakespeare and Company book label to rear pastedown including name of original proprietor Sylvia Beach and shop's address as 12 Rue de L'Odeon, Paris. Light fading to boards, light soil mark outside top edge, otherwise in beautiful, unmarked condition; binding tight and square. This volume has significant literary importance. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), was one of the most influential American modernists of the 20th Century. A prolific and experimental writer herself, Stein regularly hosted a literary and artistic salon from her Paris home at 27 Rue de Fleurus. Guests included Ernest Hemmingway, Ezra Pound, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. From 1930 to 1933, Stein and her life-long partner Alice B.Toklas were publishers of their own press called The Plain Edition. The Plain Edition published 5 books in total; this volume How To Write was limited to 1000 copies. Sylvia Beach, (1887-1962) an American ex-pat, owned the English language bookstore Shakespeare and Company located at 12 Rue de L'Odeon, Paris. It became an iconic gathering (and sometimes residence) for writers of the 'Lost Generation'. Gertrude Stein could be found there as well as Ernest Hemingway, Scott Fitzgerald, TS Eliot, Ezra Pound, Andre Gide, William Carlos Williams and James Joyce. Beach published Joyce's controversial book Ulysses in 1922 under the Shakespeare and Company imprint. Hemmingway writes about the store in A Moveable Feast. Shakespeare and Company closed in December 1941 during the German occupation of France in World War II. Hemmingway claimed to have 'personally liberated' the store at the end of the war although Beach chose not to reopen. In 1951 American George Whitman opened up an English-language bookstore on the Paris left bank intentionally modelling it on Shakespeare and Company. It too became the gathering place and residence for many famous writers and the publisher of literary firsts. With Beach's prior permission, Whitman renamed his shop Shakespeare and Company after Beach's death. Whitman's daughter Sylvia Whitman, (named after Sylvia Beach) took over the shop in 2003.

        Sovetskaja Architektura No 1-2 (1931)

The first published issue, two fascicules in one volume, 126 pp., of the influential Soviet architectural journal, which opens with an article on the 1931 Bauhaus exhibition in Moscow, with contributions from important Soviet architectural figures including Nikolai Ladowski, Georgi Krutikow, Lenid and Alexander Vesnin, Moisei Ginzburg, and others. Profusely illustrated throughout from photographs, drawings, and plans. Ink dedication and inscription to inside front coer, ink staining to upper right corner of approximately last 25 pp. 4to. Orig. typographic paper wrpps., some tanning, slightly rubbed especially along spine, possibly restored. Moscow (Gosudarstvennoe Techniko-Teoret) 1931. Hannes Meyer, the second director of the Bauhaus organized two exhibitions in Moscow, in 1930 and 1931, after emigrating to the Soviet Union in 1930. The first was held at the Architecture Academy and was a minor, almost-impromptu affair. The second was held at Moscow's State Musuem of New Western Art and took the form of a retrospective of more than 140 drawings, prints, and photographs along with around 40 objects, including textile samples. It was called "Bauhaus Dessau Währent der Leitung Unter Hannes Meyer 1928-1930", or "The Dessau Bauhaus during the Directorship of Hannes Meyer 1928-1930". Compared with the impressive exhibition on behalf of the German Werkbund at the Grand Palais in Paris, these Moscow exhibitions were humble and quite sparse. As of August 2017, we could find only four holdings worldwide and not a single holding in North America.

        Essays in Persuasion.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1931 - Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Spine lightly rolled, very minor foxing to contents; a few nicks and a little loss to dust jacket extremities and a neat split to the spine, professionally reinforced using Japanese paper; a very good copy. First edition, first impression, of Keynes's first collection of essays. "Keynes's intensive public activity with respect to the policy discussions of the inter-war period was reflected in the more than three-hundred articles he wrote for the 'highbrow' news magazines of the time (particularly the Nation and Athenaeum- of whose board Keynes was chairman in the 1920's - and its successor The New Statesman and Nation) as well as for the popular press. Many of the latter articles were syndicated in newspapers all over the world. A selection from these and similar writings were reissued by Keynes in 1931 under the title Essays in Persuasion. They are marked by a brilliant style, truly the work of a literary craftsman" (Patinkin in The New Palgrave). Mattioli 1810; Moggridge A 8.1.1; The New Palgrave III, pp. 19–39.         POZICIJA NADREALIZMA [Die Position des Surrealismus]

MATIĆ, Dušan; RISTIĆ, Marko et al.: POZICIJA NADREALIZMA [Die Position des Surrealismus]. Signatura Rerum. Beograd: Nadrealisticka izdanja 1931. 11 S. Gr. 8° (17:22 cm).
