Crevel, René; Kay Boyle; & Max Ernst
1931. Small 37 pp. volume, being a fragment of the novel Babylone by René Crevel, translated into English by Kay Boyle, and illustrated with nineteen original photograms by Max Ernst, produced in conjunction with Man Ray in his studio using photo-sensitive paper, each with caption in red ink on tissue guards. 12mo. Black boards with gilt decoration designed by Max Ernst. Paris (Black Sun Press) 1931. Limited edition of 255 copies. Max Ernst was a pioneering figure of the Dada and Surrealist movements of the early 20th century. Counted among his many accomplishments is his collaboration with American artist Man Ray to develop the photogram, which is essentially a photograph produced without the need for a camera or lens. Man Ray used a similar process to create his Rayographs. The photograms in this book were made by combining textural rubbings and line drawings on sheets of thin translucent paper, and then using those sheets as negatives to create a reverse image on photosensitive paper. It must have been a very labor-intensive process, as each photogram was produced from an original work of art created by Ernst. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Farmer, Cicely
UK: Faber and Faber, 1931. The First UK printing published by Faber and Faber in 1931. The Book is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. Yellow boards with slightly dulled gilt lettering. Spotting to the text block with slight fading of the green top stain. Mild spotting to the end papers, otherwise clean with no inscriptions. The WRAPPER is complete and is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition. Some inevitable toning to the spine with some light spotting mainly to the folds and the rear cover/spine. The EDWARD BAWDEN designed wrapper artwork is stunning and very representative of the period. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival protector. Loosely inserted is a flyer advert for other Faber titles. The blurb on the front flap of the wrapper describes the book as: 'a book about travel in Asia and a delightful entertainment. In a succession of scenes, each a complete scene, Miss Farmer relates her experiences during her holiday which began in China, continued in Malaya, Rangoon and Ceylon and came to end in Egypt, where travelling europeans rub their eyes and resume normality....'. A wonderfully scarce travel account. The only copy we have handled to date. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

HAMMETT, Dashiell
Alfred A. Knopf, 1931. Near Fine. Hardcover. First edition, preceding the American edition, and first issue, with the Knopf imprint (later issues have the Cassell imprint). Attractive engraved bookplate on the front pastedown, slightly cocked, and with a small, not too obtrusive stain on the front board, otherwise near fine, lacking the rare dustwrapper. A very attractive copy of the author's fourth book. This true first, English edition is exceptionally uncommon, and flat out rare in the jacket (which this copy lacks). Knopf published in the U.K. for only a few years, and generally produced very small editions. [Attributes: First Edition]

London John Hamilton Ltd nd. 1931. 1st Impression. 12.5 x 19cm. Publisher's original blue cloth covered boards with title blind stamped at the top of the front board and gilt titles to spine. Blue wash to the top edge of the text block. Publisher's original dust jacket designed by Will Farrow, has not been clipped, showing 7/6 at the bottom of the front flap. Part of The Sundial Mystery Library, 288pp + 28 publisher's catalogue. The boards are a little faded along the top edge. The spine is a little toned, most of the gilt has gone from the titles and there is a faded 1cm band across its top, commensurate with the corresponding loss to the dust jacket. The fore edge of the upper board cloth has a 1cm split at its foot and a dent marked in white higher up - there is a very light dent mark level with this towards the centre of the front board. There is significant spotting to the fore and bottom edges of the text block – the binding is tight and square. Internally, there is a small neat ink name at the top of the front free endpaper and a small stain mark at the fore edge of the front pastedown. The first five leaves have significant spotting, thereafter the spotting is sporadic. The publisher's catalogue, titled "Twelfth List of Sundial Editions", follows straight on at the end of the book and has 28 numbered pages. This is the same catalogue that appears in the copies held by both The British Library and The Bodlean (It is the same catalogue that appears in Exit Simeon Hex, by the same author in the same series and published in 1930 and so precedes the reprint with the 22 p … [Click Below for Full Description]

Brown Hardware Co., 1931-1933. NA. Very Good. Striking, sometimes colorful, examples of advertising artwork from 1933. Advertising a wide variety of hardware merchandise, including tool kits, stoves, galvanized ware, bathroom fixtures, fencing, house paint, brushes, sporting equipment (something typically sold at hardware stores back then), etc. as well as holiday promotions for the business. Oblong, 28 by 35.5 cm each. The ads exude the quintessence of the Art Deco aesthetic, then in its heyday, with their pared down, linear and geometric ornamentation, to which are added cutesy illustrations of children, turkeys, etc., as befitting the particular ad. The ads are almost surely all from a single business, although the name of a business, Brown Hardware, only appears on one of the panels, and we are of the view that all the artwork was probably done by a single artist. Condition: moderate wear. The paint remains fresh in appearance.

Description: Anton Reiser. Albert Einstein 1931. Book is a Hurricane Survivor and is basically poor condition however the Front Free End Paper with his presentation inscription and signature is clean in the area where it is signed. Albert Einstein's full name is extremely rare for his autograph. Most of his autographs are A. Einstein and NOT Albert Einstein with a date! Lot also includes Envelope and invitation to the Einstein Banquet in Los Angeles which has some water stains. I cut out the autograph on the first page for easier authentication and grading. The autograph was sent in for a grade and received a PSA 8 for the autograph grade. I know the grade for the autograph is an 8 but look for yourself!! The full ink in the writing and autograph is all there. There is no sign of blemish, fade, or discoloration. Please contact me with any questions. Please view my other items for sale as well.

Starr, Meredith.
First Edition / Original Edition. Cambridge, Published by the National Poetry Circle, [1931]. Small Octavo (12.7 cm x 18.8 cm). 15 pages. Original Softcover, stapled with cover-illustration by Meredith Starr, monogrammed in the plate „M.S. 1931". The booklet lies loosely inside the original softcover wrappers. The staples a little rusty. Otherwise in excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. This pamphlet is of extreme scarcity ! The last two pages of the publication are basically an advertising for the retreat center Meredith Starr established in 1931 at East Challacombe, North Devon (a couple of miles from Combe Martin), to where he invited Meher Baba in order to come and meet westerners. In his reface, Starr writes: „The Way of Escape" is a symbolic poem that deicts some of the complexes of modern life, particularly those responsible for the cleavage between thought and reality ! The ways of Escape, the path leading to the North, represents the attainment of synthesis (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual maturity) in a world disintegrated by analysis. Neither realism nor idealism can satisfy the needs of the present age. Both are necessary and both must be integrated in a Higher Consciousness. In this connection the remarks of Jung in „Psychological Types" concerning the symbol will repay serious investigation. A symbol is composed of elements that are both real and unreal, and hence can bridge the gulf between and illusion. In the poem this Higher Consciousness is indicated by the description of Alaska and by the utterances of Christ - not the Ch … [Click Below for Full Description]

1931. Rare. [Click Below for Full Description]
