      Printed by the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, for Random House, New York 1928 - 368 x 242 mm. (14 1/2 x 9 5/8"). 2 p.l., 156 pp., [1] leaf. No. 15 OF 150 COPIES. Publisher's Philippine mahogany boards backed with brown Niger morocco by William Wheeler, raised bands, spine with titling in blind. Paragraph marks in red or blue, 32 woodcuts in the text, and 34 large hand-illuminated initials in red, blue, and gold by Valenti Angelo. Prospectus laid in at front. Heller & Magee 107. Just a hint of rubbing to joints and spine bands, tiny chip out of bottom of the spine, very short crack beginning at bottom of one joint, but still quite an appealing copy, and fine internally, the text clean, fresh, and bright. This attractively bound, printed, and illuminated edition of a famous Medieval travel book is one of the finest productions of the Grabhorn Press, and was recognized in 1928 as one of the 50 Books of the Year by the AIGA design association. The content, type, illustrations, illuminations, and binding come together to create a tribute to early books and at the same time a very pleasing example of modern private press printing. This book marked the first use in America of the Bibel Gotisch type designed and cut by Rudolf Koch, and Heller & Magee observes that the work "was an ideal subject for this type and for the simple medieval illustrations of Valenti Angelo that accompany it" (not to mention the 5,100[!] initials Angelo illuminated by hand in the 150 copies). The Press had intended to offer the work for direct sale, but the entire run was purchased by Bennett Cerf (who saw the proofs on a visit to San Francisco) for issuance under the imprint of Random House. First appearing as an anonymous French manuscript in about 1357, Mandeville's account exists in many forms: there are at least 22 versions known from some 250 surviving manuscripts, and the work was printed at least 20 times in the 15th century. The book continued to appear with regularity in English during the 16th and 17th centuries, but the 1725 printing upon which the Grabhorn edition is based is said by Cox to be the "completest edition up to date," and it is characterized by Lowndes as "the best English edition." Cox tells us that although "long accepted as an authentic and valuable record of travel," the work is now known to be a fabrication, perhaps pieced together by a monk fluent in languages and with access to a large library, but with no experience as a world traveller. Regardless of its origin, it continues to provide fascinating reading as an account of the known world in the 14th century. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Frame has been repainted and distressed. Right corners of frame have widened slightly, as seen in photos.Charles Kvapil was born in 1884 in Anvers, Belgium. He exhibited his first work in Anvers in 1908 at the Salon d'Anvers. In 1911 he exhibited in Munich, where his works showed an influence of Cubism, and that same year he exhibited at the Triennale de Bruxelles. He was mobilized into the army in World War One. After the war he attended l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Anvers. He began to exhibit in Paris in 1920 at the Salon des Indépendants. He moved into a studio in Montmartre where he lived for many years. He painted his models in the studio, occasionally in front of his window with the hills of Montmartre in the background. This is one of 50 copies of the "Edition de Luxe", containing 50 mounted photographic plates not included in the trade issue, and a presentation copy, inscribed by E.P. Goldschmidt to Stephen Gaselee, Pepys Librarian (1908-1919) and Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge (1909-1943). In a tipped-in letter from Goldschmidt to Gaselee (dated 9 December 1927), Goldschmidt declares this to be "the very first copy that comes from the binder". Two other presentation copies of the book are known to the writer: one was inscribed by Goldschmidt to Hugh William Davies, cataloguer for the London booksellers W.J. Leighton, "with best thanks for help and advice from the author" (with Jonathan Hill, Catalogue 8, 1982, item 145); the other to Alice Parsons Millard, collector and proprietor of George M. Millard Rare & Fine Imported Books, Los Angeles (in 1984-1985 with Jennifer S. Larson, Yerba Buena Books, San Francisco). "A catalogue raisonné of the author's own Collection, with a preface of 126 pages on fifteenth and sixteenth-century bindings generally... The descriptions of the individual books are models of their kind. Goldschmidt indeed deserves to be called the Robert Proctor of bookbindings.         The Immortal Friend.

      New York: Boni & Liveright, 1928 - Octavo. Original boards, black cloth spine with title label, gilt-patterned cloth sides. With the dust jacket, supplied. Spine label tanned, corners a little rubbed, small damp stain to fore-edge of front board, a very good copy, with the supplied jacket only very slightly chipped at the extremities, slightly sunned around spine and edges, with a few minor marks, but very nice. First edition, first printing, rare signed copy of this early collection of mystical poems, signed "J. Krishnamurti" on the front free endpaper. Jiddu Krishnamurti (1895-1986), a Brahmin who as a child had been selected and groomed by Theosophists and as the long-expected "World Teacher", but soon rejected the mantle and spent his life travelling the world, teaching, and writing. Not unlike Rabindranath Tagore, Krishnamurti became popular in the Western world as a conduit for ancient Eastern wisdom. He gained international fame with The First and Last Freedom, published in 1954 with a Foreword by Aldous Huxley, whom he had befriended in 1938 while living in California. Krishnamurti's earlier books are scarce, and signed copies are remarkably rare. This copy has the ticket of a Hollywood bookshop apparently dedicated to the guru, "Krishnamurti's Works: 1705 N. The scarce first edition of the original Broadway version, published in April 1928, with the title page dated "MCMXXVIII". This edition is the only one that contains the Act II reprise of "Why Do I Love You?" which was replaced with "Dance Away the Night" for the London (and subsequent) productions. "Show Boat" was the first and defining "book musical", a musical play in which the songs and dances were integrated with a serious story. This score was in the library of George and Ira Gershwin, unfortunately without ownership marks.

Above that publishers' name is handwritten by someone, possibly her husband George Putnam, who worked with her in writing the book and whose family firm published it. Tiny silk 48-star American flag in cellophane pouch on front paste down, which flew with Earhart in the Friendship from Boston to Wales. 374pp. Half maroon cloth and marbled paper over boards, lettrered and ruled in gilt. Very Good or better with split hinge at front, bottom and top edges rubbed, slightly bumped corners. First edition, first state (including the characters 'Martin Gaythorn-Brodie' and 'Kevin Saunderson' who were re-named in all subsequent issues - these portraits of Eddie Gaythorn-Hardie and Gavin Henderson being a little too easy to identify). 8vo. 288pp. Two-tone red and black 'snakeskin' cloth lettered in gold at spine. With a frontispiece and five illustrations by the author. Spine ends lightly chafed and with a small area of fraying to the rear gutter. A little light spotting to occasional text leaves and a minor slant to the binding. Some light pink staining to endpapers where the cloth dye has run, and a small Times Book Club label to the base of the rear pastedown, alongside the ghost of almost entirely erased former owner pencilled notes.         Sump'n Like Wings and A Lantern to See By; Two Oklahoma Plays

      New York: Samuel French, 1928. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. A nice copy with a dust jacket that has done its job in protecting the book. The book itself is very nice and the gilt on the spine is as bright as the day it was published. Front cover is very clean except for the lightest of soiling around the edges. The rear cover has some spotting of a white material that does not clean. The dust jacket is 95% complete and hangs together but is missing several chips, none larger than a quarter. Inscribed by the author on the FFEP: 'For Anatol - "We [unintelligible] to hang together." -Lynn New York Feb. 22, 1931.' Anatol Bendukov was one of the principal managers of the original company of "Green Grows the Lilacs", the basis of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Oklahoma".       (n. p.), 1928. Limited Edition. No binding. Near fine. No. 30 of an unknown limitation, signed by Eric Gill. Large collotype print of John Gray, numbered 30 (possibly of 50, per the prior owner's note), signed and dated in the plate, and additionally signed by Gill in pencil in the lower lefthand corner of the illustration. Gray was an aesthetic poet of the 1890s and friend of such literary luminaries of the Decadent period as Ernest Dowson, Aubrey Beardsley, and Oscar Wilde; Gray is purported to be the inspiration for the title character in Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Gray later converted to Catholicism, followed by his longtime life-partner, Marc-Andre Raffalovich, a patron of the arts who supported Eric Gill, among others; Gill designed bookplates for both men, and drew a portrait of Raffalovich, as well. Offwhite paper printed in black. 16" x 12". Slits in front free endpaper, previously cut to mount inscribed postcard, now repaired. A very good copy. Reprint, inscribed by Baroness Orczy to Frederick Bason, "To Frederick Bason with kind wishes from the author Emmuska Orczy May 18 1928." Also with a postcard of the author, again inscribed to Frederick Bason tipped into the front free endpaper. Mr Bason has written on the spine of the dustwrapper in tiny letters "Autographed Copy Presented by the Authoress to me. May 1928." A charming association copy inscribed from Baroness Orczy to Fred Bason the "cockney bookseller". Born in the East End of London in 1908, Bason started selling books from a barrow at the age of fifteen. His pursuit of autographs led to friendships with a number of famous writers, eventually gaining celebrity in his own right for his colourful life and writings. The first volume of his entertaining diary contains three mentions of Baroness Orczy. In December 1928 he notes receiving a Christmas card from her, and in 1931 (date not noted) he writes "Baroness Orczy is coming to tea next week - but then again she may not." The third entry from 1936 "wrote to Baroness Orczy accepting invite" suggests their acquaintance lasted many years. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Lady Chatterley's Lover

      Florence: Privately Printed,, 1928. Square octavo. Original mulberry-coloured paper boards, printed spine label, Lawrence's phoenix device blocked in black on front cover, untrimmed and largely unopened. With the plain dust jacket. Jacket lightly toned at the spine, folds and periphery of panels, old tape repair on verso at foot of front panel, a few minor nicks and chips, touch of foxing to top edge. An excellent copy. First edition, number 780 of 1,000 copies signed by Lawrence. "The publication (for subscribers) of the final version of Lady Chatterley's Lover - written in the astonishing time of just five weeks, in one of Lawrence's last great bursts of creative energy - also sustained him, as he overcame the difficulties lying in the way of an individual publishing and distributing his own book. With the help of the Florentine bookseller Pino Orioli, the handsome volume was printed in and distributed from Florence, and made Lawrence more money than he had ever imagined" (ODNB). One of the most famous and controversial books of the 20th century - a strikingly well preserved copy in one of the finest examples of the fragile dust jacket that we have encountered.

        The 1928 Alaska Tour Photograph Album.

      N.p. [ca. 1928], [Alaska] - Original photograph album measuring 9 x 5 1/4 inches and bearing 91 original silver gelatin prints of the 1928 Alaska Road Tour by Governor George A Parks, the Alaska Road Commissioner Major Malcolm Elliott and Territorial Highway Engineer Robert J. Sommers. THe photographs measure 5 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches and all (or nearly so) bear a typewritten caption. Original string-tied flexible leather with gilt cover lettering and a photographic title plate. The photographs and the album are both in very good condition. This tour was undertaken by Parks, Elliott and Sommers in 1928 to ascertain the need for more highways in Alaska and to discern the work already done on various existing routes such as the Richardson Highway. The trip of 2,500 miles to northern and interior Alaska was the first extensive trip that an Alaskan governor had made by airplane. In 1928 there were less than 500 miles of paved roads in the entire state (363 on the Richardson Highway and 44 on the Steese Highway). On the front pastedown of the album is an itinerary (photograph) listing dates, locations, miles traveled and form of transportation. All in all they traveled 4580 miles of which 385 were by steamship, 467 by rail, 281 by railroad speeders (automobiles adapted to ride on the rails), 432 by truck and automobile, 8 by wagon and 2007 by air. They drove a 1928 Ford when they were able (photograph included). The largest amount of miles traveled was by air and their pilot was A. A. Bennett (photographs included). They left Juneau on May 22 and returned June 28th. Their stops were as follows; Fairbanks, Nenana, McGrath, Ophir, Takotna, Iditerad, Unalakleet, Golovin, Nome, Teller, Candle, Kotzebue, Nulato, Ruby, Tanana, Bettles, Wiseman, Fort Yukon, Circle Hot Springs, Livengood, Fairbanks, Chitina, Kennicott. McCarthy, Dan Creek Road, Chitina and Cordova. Opposite this itinerary is a photograph of a map showing the routes taken. There are 91 original photographs of the sights seen by this group on their Alaska Tour of 1928. There does not seem to be any overriding theme other than transportation and the compiler has included many photographs of these he found interesting. A few examples would be "Bill and wife at their cabin on Ophir-Takotna Road. These people are mining placer gold"; "Freighting on Yukon Highway near Goldstream" ; "Tunnel at head of Fox Gulch, tapping Chatanika River watershed for for dredges in Goldstream"; "Gold Dredge at Flat"; "Cabin on Nome-Shelton tram near Nome bridge"; "Gas-driven speeder on Nome-Shelton tram"; "The graveyard at Nulato"; "End of aviation field at Nulato" (a panorama of two photographs joined and showing many indigenous people); "Fort Yukon Hotel"; "Alaska Road Commission house at Sallchaket"; "Cableway ferry [i.e. a zipline] for pedestrians between aviation field and village Golovin"; "Widening of Richardson Highway near Hogans--June, 1928"; "Adams grader and caterpillar working between Fairbanks and 18-mile Roadhouse-June 19, 1928", etc. Special attention is given to the various airfields (as is appropriate as they traveled far by air) of Alaska: Fairbanks Airport, Nenana Landing Field, Unalakleet aviation field, Nulato aviation field. Wiseman aviation field, Bettles aviation field, etc. This album was a portrayal of a government survey of transportation in Alaska and thus there are almost no photographs of strictly natural phenomenon (lakes, glaciers, etc). It is likely that Robert J. Sommers was the photographer as there are numerous photographs of Parks and Elliott but only one of Sommers. Plus included is a leather zip-up satchel with with the initials R. J. S. in gilt and within it are many assorted newspaper articles about Robert J. Sommers. Also included is a large (13 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches) original hand-colored photograph of the Taku Glacier by E. Andrews, a n original copy printed (matted) of the R. J. Sommers Construction Company showing a busy yard in 1944, a packet of personal photographs from R. J. Sommers,
