Paris 14 avril 1921, 26,8x31,6cm, une feuille. - First edition of this leaflet announcing the first public event organized for the "Season Dada 1921". Some very slight discolorations without serious creases. Very nice copy of a great freshness and having preserved its fragile green color. Precious flyer dada of the visit of the church St-Julien-le-Pauvre, realized within the framework of a series of excursions and visits through Paris, in places voluntarily derisory. Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes served as a guide, improvising readings in front of a column or sculpture of articles taken at random from a big Larousse dictionary. The visit, which took place in the rain, counted only about fifty participants and was considered a failure sealing the end of these happenings Dadaists. Participation of Gabrielle Buffet, Louis Aragon, Hans Arp, André Breton, Paul Éluard, Théodore Fraenkel, Jean Hussar, Benjamin Péret, Francis Picabia, Georges Ribemont-Desssaignes, Jacques Rigaut, Philippe Soupault, Tristan Tzara. Precious dada leaflet, extremely rare in this condition. Partecipazione di Gabrielle Buffet, Louis Aragon, Hans Arp, André Breton, Paul Éluard, Théodore Fraenkel, Jean Hussar, Benjamin Péret, Francis Picabia, Georges Ribemont-Desssaignes, Jacques Rigaut, Philippe Soupault, Tristan Tzara. El'kina, [Dora], [Natalia] Boguslavskaia, and [Anna] Kurskaia
1921. Nizhnii-Novgorod: Izd. Vserossiiskoi chrezvychainoi komissii po likvidatsii bezgramotnosti, 1921. Large octavo (single folded sheet); 32 pp. A fine copy. Early provincial edition, and a fine copy, of the first mass-produced Soviet primer for illiterate adults, published by the newly formed All-Russian Emergency Commission for the Elimination of Illiteracy (Vserossiiskaia chrezvychainaia komissia po likvidatsii bezgramotnosti; Likbez, founded in 1920). Initially published in Moscow, this edition was printed at Nizhnii-Novgorod. Covered in large print slogans, with strong rhythmic alternations, the design and layout of the publication are clearly inspired by Russian Futurism. The simple texts are filled with Bolshevik vocabulary and the idea of the need for social and political change is constantly reiterated. The palindrome "My - ne raby, raby ne - my" (We are not slaves, slaves we are not/slaves are silent) coined by Aleksandr Shneer opens the text, and came to be known all across the Soviet Republics from this primer. The book moves quickly from simple rhymes to complex texts, including poems by Nikolai Nekrasov, Valery Briusov, and Maxim Gorky. Each text is followed by an ideologically charged question to be discussed in the classroom, and the authors (all of whom published other primers related to literacy and political education) explicitly state that teaching reading and writing should be connected with political literacy. Illiteracy was a major issue in turn-of-the-century Russia, with literacy rates for 1897 at only 21% of the population (29% for men and 13% fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIcholas Vachel Lindsay
The Macmillan Company, 1921. D'ARTAGNAN BOOKS This is a signed 'first' edition in good condition. It was published by The Macmillan Company in 1921. The 'true' first edition was published in 1913 (this is the first Macmillan edition). It is also signed by his sister Olive Lindsay Wakefield, and her husband Arthur Paul Wakefield, to whom Vachel Lindsay had dedicated this book. The inscription is to Mrs Haddon C Adams. Mr Haddon C Adams was an engineer and avid admirer of John Ruskin - he donated his extensive Ruskin collection to the Bembridge School. He went to America in 1922, was an assistant highway engineer in Illinois, and returned to England in 1926. This was Vachel Lindsay's first book, and was followed by The Congo. I will also include a small newspaper clipping which is titled - In Memory of a Good Printer. This is a 1st Edition / 1st Printing (Macmillan).

Chicago & New York: American Historical Society, 1921. These three large hard cover books are all in very good condition, somewhat amazing as large books typically stress their bindings and suffer in the process. These volumes have been cared for or perhaps just undisturbed over the years! The hard covers are a bit dust-dulled and have some rubbed places and one has some remains of a thin paper streak stuck to it (please be sure to see the photos). The corners and spine tips are a bit bumped but nothing too severe. Inside, the books are unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout, without any real age-toning or foxing. All the hinges (very sturdy hinges at that) are intact and the bindings are tight and sound. These books are not ex-library or remainders. They belong in the collection of someone or some institution proud of the history of the State of Montana and who will take care of these guideposts to its history! 1921. William Hope Hodgson - The eight "cheap editions" published by Holden and Hardingham between 1920 and 1921, all in original dust jackets. The titles are: Carnacki the Ghost Finder, The Night land, Men of the Deep Waters, The House on the Borderland, The Boats of Glen-Carrig, The Luck of the Strong, Captain Gault and The Ghost Pirates All eight cheap editions published shortly after Hodgson's death, in their original dust jackets, all illustrated in the same style and using the same colour palette. An important edition, as aside from a few magazine appearances Hodgson would not be in print again until his resurrection by Arkham House in the 1940s. Three are bound in cloth, all from 1920, with the later five in cheaper paper boards. The bindings are generally firm, the boards mostly clean with only minor bumping and rubbing, some with varying degrees of fading, Captain Gault has fared slightly worse than the other seven with loss to the paper at the bottom of the front board and a knock to the rear board. The text blocks are age browned and slightly dusty, all have the same bookseller's label to the front pastedown. The dust jackets are mostly slightly grubby with minor loss and short closed tears, some have small tape repairs or tape burns from old repairs to the reverse, a few have more significant loss and rubbing and two are substantially complete. A very rare complete set of Hodgson's weird, fantastic supernatural and nautical novels and short story collections, which to judge by the uniformity of condition and the bookseller's labels may well have been together si … [Click Below for Full Description]

William Heinemann, London, 1921. "Comus" by John Milton and illustrated by Arthur Rackham - Edition De Luxe, limited to 550 numbered copies, each signed by Rackham. This copy number 302. Publisher’s vellum spine over parchment boards, gilt lettering and decoration to upper board, gilt lettering to spine, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed, pictorial endpapers (printed in blue), 24 tipped-in colour plates mounted on brown paper (each with descriptive tissue guard), around 40 line drawings (some full page), text pages on laid paper (with windmill watermark), xviii / 76 pages, 30.2 x 23 cm. Edition De Luxe, limited to 550 numbered copies, each signed by Rackham. This copy number 302. Undated, but 1921. Latimore and Haskell, pp.54-55. Riall, p.143. ‘Comus’, a dramatic entertainment or ‘masque’, was first performed at Ludlow Castle in 1634, and is one of the Elizabethan poet John Milton’s most important early works. Its fairy-tale elements are here superbly visualized by Arthur Rackham, whose ethereal paintings and line drawings abound with fairies, sprites, water nymphs, goblins, fauns, satyrs and the like. Classical mythology is represented by wonderful portraits of Diana the Huntress, Iris, goddess of the rainbow, the three Hesperides, and Daphne – magically portrayed at the very moment she transforms into a tree. The 24 colour plates in ‘Comus’ are very much reminiscent of Rackham’s earlier illustrations for ‘Undine’ (1909) and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ (1908) – not too surprising, given that he had embarked on the project as early as 1914. As Hudson notes, in ‘Arthur R … [Click Below for Full Description]
