Lane, Alfred Church] as A. Ruelle de l'Eglise; Chase Salmon Osborn (association)
Richard G. Badger: The Gorham Press, Boston, 1921. 40pp; black cloth-backed foil-stamped blue boards; 189 x 128 x 8 mm. A collection of the author's annual Valentine verses to his wife (referred to as 'Columbine' in several poems), on their 25th (silver) anniversary; his only book. Bearing the bookplate of the 27th Governor of Michigan, Chase Salmon Osborn (1860-1949), drawn, etched & printed by Ralph Mosher Pearson (1883-1958). The pseudonym effects a French anagram of the author's name: 'A Lane of the Church'. To protect his identity, copyright in the present volume (entered 8 August 1921) was held by his son (the year he graduated from Cornell), an effective precaution while he was yet young & unknown, though increasingly less so as he rose to become the eminent mediaeval historian, Frederic C[hapin] Lane. The author, Dr Alfred Church Lane (1869-1948) -- husband from 1896, to Susanne Foster Lauriat (daughter of publisher Charles Lauriat of Boston) -- taught Mathematics at Harvard before becoming State Geologist for Michigan (1899-1909), Pearson Professor of Geology and Mineralogy at Tufts (1909-35), President of the Geological Society of America (1931) & Chairman of the Committee on the Measurement of Geologic Time by Atomic Disintegration (1924-46). Author of some 1087 scientific papers (1889-1946), this volume remains his only book; a man who has been characterized "by some atomic scientists as the 'Forgotten Man' of atomic research for his role in early work on splitting the atom" [Finding Aid to the Alfred Church Lane papers, 1903-83, Tufts University]. Mr. French was the first friend I made after coming to Chicago ten years ago, and was one of the few men who looked over, through and beyond the crude, outer covering of ignorance which dominated my personality, and became my friend on account of that which he saw lying dormant in my soul, awaiting the awakening hand of time and experience. Much of the best I have written was inspiried by suggestions from Mr. French, given in ordinary conversation, out of his own rich fund of knowledge. Tennyson, Alfred Lord
Oxford University Press, London, 1921. Octavo, finely bound in full leather by Riviere. Gilt titles and tooling to the spine, double gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, slipcase. Frontispiece of Tennyson. Introduction by Herbert Warren. In near fine condition. As source material for his poetry, Tennyson used a wide range of subject matter ranging from medieval legends to classical myths and from domestic situations to observations of nature. The influence of John Keats and other Romantic poets published before and during his childhood is evident from the richness of his imagery and descriptive writing. He also handled rhythm masterfully. The insistent beat of Break, Break, Break emphasizes the relentless sadness of the subject matter. Tennyson's use of the musical qualities of words to emphasize his rhythms and meanings is sensitive. Tennyson was a craftsman who polished and revised his manuscripts extensively, to the point where his efforts at self-editing were described by his contemporary Robert Browning as "insane", symptomatic of "mental infirmity." Few poets have used such a variety of styles with such an exact understanding of metre; like many Victorian poets, he experimented in adapting the quantitative metres of Greek and Latin poetry to English. He reflects the Victorian period of his maturity in his feeling for order and his tendency towards moralizing. He also reflects a concern common among Victorian writers in being troubled by the conflict between religious faith and expanding scientific knowledge. Like … [Click Below for Full Description]

LUXEMBURG, Rosa.
[Moscow:] Gosudarstvennoe izdatelstvo, 1921. Large octavo. Original printed buff paper wrappers, rebacked preserving the majority of the original spine, front wrapper expertly rehinged, uncut and unopened. Extremities chipped and nicked, bottom left corner of rear wrapper torn, two blue ink and pencil marks to title page, contents evenly browned, a very good copy. First edition in Russian of Luxemburg's most important work, translated from the original German (Akkumulation des Kapitals, 1913) by one of the few Russian Luxemburgist economists, Sholom Moiseevich Dvolaitskii. Born in Lithuania in 1893, he became a follower of Plekhanov in 1911 and was soon thereafter banished to Tomsk for revolutionary activity. After the October Revolution Dvolaitskii became a lecturer of economics at various Soviet universities and published some fifteen works during the 1920s. He was arrested and shot in 1937, a fate shared by the editor Bukharin the following year. Rosa Luxemburg (1870-1919) was a socialist thinker and writer, one of the leaders of Polish and German Social Democracy, and an economist. In the period 1907-14, she lectured in political economy, then in economic history. Towards the end of that period, she elaborated her lecture notes to publish them in the form of a manual, but in view of the theoretical problems she encountered, the manuscript was left unfinished. These problems stemmed from her conviction that political economy found its peak and climax in Marx's works and that it could be developed by his followers only in details. Attempting to give an outline of the gene … [Click Below for Full Description]

Knight, Frank H
Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1921. First edition of Knight's classic treatise. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In near fine condition. First editions are scarce. In economics, "Knightian uncertainty" is risk that is immeasurable, impossible to calculate. Knightian uncertainty is named after University of Chicago economist Frank Knight (1885-1972), who distinguished risk and uncertainty in his work "Risk, Uncertainty, and Profit": "Uncertainty must be taken in a sense radically distinct from the familiar notion of Risk, from which it has never been properly separated.... The essential fact is that 'risk' means in some cases a quantity susceptible of measurement, while at other times it is something distinctly not of this character; and there are far-reaching and crucial differences in the bearings of the phenomena depending on which of the two is really present and operating.... It will appear that a measurable uncertainty, or 'risk' proper, as we shall use the term, is so far different from an unmeasurable one that it is not in effect an uncertainty at all."

Ezra Pound
NY: Boni and Liveright, 1921. Pound, Ezra. Poems 1918-21: Including Three Portraits and Four Cantos. 8vo parchment-backed boards. NY: Boni and Liveright, 1921. In retrospect, the firm of Boni and Liveright was perhaps the most authentically American and "revolutionary" at the beginning of the 20th Century. OWEN, Wilfred. [SASSOON, Siegfried]
Chatto & Windus. London, 1921. An unusually well-preserved example of this rather fragile publication, this copy from the first and only reprinting of the first edition, published in March 1921. Publisher's red cloth over boards. No dustwrapper. Scarce and rather fragile this is Owen's only book, first published in December 1920, two years after his death. The preface "found in an unfinished condition amongst Wilfred Owen's papers." states that: "This book is not about heros. [-] nor anything about glory, honour, dominion or power,". Very slight fading towards the backstrip, some marking to the cloth, more pronounced to the rear board, paper label very slightly browned but legible and complete. Some offsetting to the half-title and very slight offsetting from the tissue guard to the frontis portrait of Owen in uniform however, there is there is very little of the toning to the endpapers commonly encountered. Red stain to the top edge of the text block bright and unfaded, leaves crisp and unmarked. A lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mudie-Cooke, Olive
[Cambridge], 1921. First and only edition of this collection of World War I lithographs by ambulance driver and war artist Olive Mudie-Cooke (1890-1925), signed and dated on the printed plate list. In 1916, London art student Mudie-Cooke enlisted as an ambulance driver on the Western Front, driving for both the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY) and the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD). For the next two years, she transported wounded soldiers along the front lines in France, Flanders, and Italy, occasionally working as a translator for the British Red Cross. Throughout her service, Mudie-Cooke sketched and painted what she saw around her: field hospitals, stalled tanks, "Hun pillboxes," blasted trees, ruined churches, a line of ambulances parked in a dark forest, "standing by for orders." Her work is characterized by a documentary eye, with close attention paid to the logistics of the relief effort and the precise damage inflicted on buildings, vehicles, and bodies at the places she names: the Somme, Ypres, Paschendael. Landscapes are eerily depopulated, compositions spare and controlled. After two years at the front, Mudie-Cooke returned to London, where her work came to the attention of the newly founded Imperial War Museum. The museum acquired a number of her paintings, and commissioned more, including the uncharacteristically sentimental "In an Ambulance: A VAD Lighting a Cigarette for a Patient" (1919). After the Armistice, the British Red Cross asked Mudie-Cooke to return to Europe to document the VAD units still in operation there, and in 1921, the Cambridge University … [Click Below for Full Description]

El'kina, [Dora], [Natalia] Boguslavskaia, and [Anna] Kurskaia
1921. Nizhnii-Novgorod: Izd. Vserossiiskoi chrezvychainoi komissii po likvidatsii bezgramotnosti, 1921. Large octavo (single folded sheet); 32 pp. A fine copy. Early provincial edition, and a fine copy, of the first mass-produced Soviet primer for illiterate adults, published by the newly formed All-Russian Emergency Commission for the Elimination of Illiteracy (Vserossiiskaia chrezvychainaia komissia po likvidatsii bezgramotnosti; Likbez, founded in 1920). Initially published in Moscow, this edition was printed at Nizhnii-Novgorod. Covered in large print slogans, with strong rhythmic alternations, the design and layout of the publication are clearly inspired by Russian Futurism. The simple texts are filled with Bolshevik vocabulary and the idea of the need for social and political change is constantly reiterated. The palindrome "My - ne raby, raby ne - my" (We are not slaves, slaves we are not/slaves are silent) coined by Aleksandr Shneer opens the text, and came to be known all across the Soviet Republics from this primer. The book moves quickly from simple rhymes to complex texts, including poems by Nikolai Nekrasov, Valery Briusov, and Maxim Gorky. Each text is followed by an ideologically charged question to be discussed in the classroom, and the authors (all of whom published other primers related to literacy and political education) explicitly state that teaching reading and writing should be connected with political literacy. Illiteracy was a major issue in turn-of-the-century Russia, with literacy rates for 1897 at only 21% of the population (29% for men and 13% … [Click Below for Full Description]
