(Pittsburgh - Dance) Mamie Barth, Evelyn Nesbitt
26 programs, mainly very good condition, with some soil, from 1921-1959. Programs of dancers (mainly children), about 20 pp. each, with photos of the dancers, ads, etc. From the estate of Mamie Barth. Also, 13x10 framed photo of Evelyn Nesbit, inscribed by her to Mamie Barth ("my old friend") "With love from -- Evelyn Nesbit 1921." In addition: 9 x 7.5 photo of Naro and Zita Lockford, inscribed to Barth in 1928 ("...was very much impressed by your wonderful school of dancing...") -- dancers of the time, including stints with the Folies Bergere. There are three approximately 8x10 framed photos, ca. 1920s-30s, of girl dancers displaying their limberness, no doubt students of Mamie Barth's school of dance, a slightly larger (11.5 x 8.5) framed photo of a girl doing a split, a larger photo (image measures 13.5 x 10) matted and framed, showing the interior of the Barth school of dance and 11 girls practicing (ca. 1920s; the studio was on 5th Ave. downtown) -- the matt is slightly soiled and is definitely non-archival. Finally, there is a framed work of art, watercolors of a ballet dancer in various poses, ca. 1950, by "Beam" -- viewable image measures 14 x 10 inches, matted, framed, not examined outside the frame. Here's the years of the programs we have: 1921-1927, 1929, 1931, 1935-1939, 1944, 1946-1951, 1953, 1956-1959, plus a 50th Anniversary "Dance Exhibition" at Allegheny High School program from 1968. The Barth School of Dancing continued for sometime after Mamie retired, run by her daughter Marjorie. Mamie's husband was a health nut and body builder who was in the holisti … [Click Below for Full Description]

The Irish Free State (Irish: Saorstát Éireann - 6 December 1922 - 29 December 1937) was a state established in 1922 under the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921. That treaty ended the three-year Irish War of Independence between the forces of the self-proclaimed Irish Republic, the Irish Republican Army (IRA), and British Crown forces. The Free State was established as a Dominion of the British Commonwealth of Nations. It comprised 26 of the 32 counties of Ireland. Northern Ireland, which comprised the remaining six counties, exercised its right under the Treaty to opt out of the new state. The Free State government consisted of the Governor-General, the representative of the King, and the Executive Council (cabinet), which replaced both the revolutionary Dáil Government and the Provisional Government set up under the Treaty. W. T. Cosgrave, who had led both of these governments since August 1922, became the first President of the Executive Council (prime minister). The Oireachtas or legislature consisted of Dáil Éireann (the lower house) and Seanad Éireann, also known as the Senate. BRUNO, Guido.
New York: published privately by the author, 1921. Octavo. Original red half cloth, blue cloth sides, titles in gilt to spine, pale blue endpapers, edges untrimmed. Slight wear to extremities, spine browned, faint spotting to cloth, paper toned; a very good copy. Illustrated title page and colophon, with 20 illustrations in the text by artists such as Ben Benn and Clara Tice. First edition, the author's copy, from a print run of 500, inscribed twice by the author on the limitation page: first in blue ink to his close associate Frank Harris, "For Frank Harris with the love and everlasting gratitude of Guido Bruno. The World seemed different since I met you, the one great man on this continent. Having met you here in America, America has fulfilled its mission in my life. April 16th 1921 GB". The second inscription was written four months later below in black ink, with Harris's name emphatically struck through: "I changed my mind and inscribe this booklet to YOU the Great Woman. Aug 31st 1921 GB". The volte-face over the recipient is intriguing: Bruno was introduced to Frank Harris by Djuna Barnes when Harris took over the editorship of Pearson's Magazine and Bruno became his editorial second-in-command. Bruno's decision to re-inscribe this copy does not appear to have been caused by any great antagonism between the two men, whose working relationship continued until Harris's death in 1931, after which Bruno published the hagiographical Frank Harris: In Memoriam Fragments of His New York Days (1933). The second recipient, the mysterious "Great Woman", is unknown. Bruno had a d … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chastel, Roger. Pochoir (colored) by Jean Saudé
Chez Jacoub Aulard & Cie., 1921. Limp Card. Paper pastedown on card. . Very Good. No. 58 of 300 copies, on "Grande Fibre de Bambou de Cochin-Chine". Folio, 38 cm square. 24 pochoir plates, 3 of which are double pages, with a brief introductory page and a limitation page at the end. Scarce, with only two institutional holdings reflected on OCLC First Search, both in France. Caricatures bear a superficial resemblance to those of Sem. The subject matter -- the rich, pampered, louche, effete -- come in for gentle drubbing by both artists. But Chastel's caricatures strike us as more cutting edge, more modernist, and compositionally quite virtuosic, in the manner that they can somehow incorporate cubist aesthetics, all the time rendering likenesses that we suspect would have been instantly recognizable by contemporaries. And without being strictly speaking realistic, Chastel recreates convincingly the atmosphere and spirit of scenes depicted. This being an album about the fashionable channel resort of Deauville, we here are shown people at the gaming tables, at the race track, sur la plage, and engaged in drinking, dancing, smoking, and almost always, peacocking -- looking to see and be seen! Condition: chipping of the paper along the spine, as virtually inevitable given the material. Light soiling on the paper pastedown. Some gentle edge creasing of the leaves within, a result of their not having the the exact same measurements and their never having been together.

Leonetto Cappiello
Bitter Campariis a French liquor advertisement from 1921 by the iconic poster artist, Leonetto Cappiello. This rare poster features Cappiello's signature style of a bright dynamic figure floating on a black background. The clown cleverly emerges from the orange as it is peeled, with Campari in hand. This is the smallest format of this image that Campari printed. Gaspar Campari first produced Bitter Campari in 1860 in Novara, Italy. The liquor falls under the category of "Bitters," which is traditionally prepared as a mixture of water, alcohol, and botanical extracts, in this case, an orange peel. Bitters were originally developed as patent medicines, but are now used as digestifs. The drink is colored with carmine dye that gives the drink its unique red coloring. In 1904, Campari began to produce its liquor for overseas export. Advertising campaigns were developed to promote the brand. Of the many Campari poster created, this 1921 poster by Leonetto Cappiello is one of the most well-known images and is highly sought after by collectors. The poster was originally created in several sizes. Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian poster artist who worked in Paris. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a graceful figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments glance. It was ideal for the fas … [Click Below for Full Description]

PLANCK, Max
Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1921. First edition, inscribed by Planck ("Mit freundlichen Grussen vom Verf[asser]."), of this important and controversial paper in the early history of quantum statistical mechanics. "As long as atoms and radiation were were treated by means of classical mechanics and electrodynamics, respectively, the problem whether individual atoms of one type could be distinguished or not did not play an important role. However, this situation changed with the advent of quantum theory, in which the methods of statistical mechanics were applied to heat radiation. In the derivation of the law of blackbody radiation, Planck had considered the statistical distribution of N indistinguishable energy packets among distinguishable resonators . . . Later authors, like S. N. Bose . . . had taken over the assumption of indistinguishability in the case of light-quanta. In the early extensions of the quantum theory to gases . . . Sackur & Tetrode had also assumed individual atoms and molecules of one type to be indistinguishable. Planck had done the same in his theory of the monatomic gas. This procedure then stimulated a controversy in the early 1920s. In a paper . . . communicated on February 1920 to the Amsterdam Academy of Sciences, Paul Ehrenfest and Viktor Trkal . . . criticized the fact that Sackur and Tetrode, as well as Planck, had always divided the expression calculated for the probability of a distribution of atoms and molecules among the elementary phase space regions by a factor N!, N being the number of identical particles considered" (Mehra & Rechen … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Charlottenburg, d.i. Dr. Tschich, 1921]. 4°. Rar. Abbildungen in Bilderlex. II, S. 158.
Date : 1921-1924. Lieu : New York. Format : In-4. THIBAUD, Jacques 1880-1953
1921. Octavo (204 x 138 mm.) 1 measure from an unidentified technical study, being an 8-note staccato pattern in C major, repeated in C-sharp major, both under one downbow, marked "Presto." On an album leaf. Signed and dated "Liège 30 Mai 1921" in black ink. No compositions by the French violinist Thibaud are recorded. "At 13 his precocious talent took him to the Paris Conservatoire... He formed a trio with his brothers, a pianist and a cellist of ability, but it was as the partner of Cortot and Casals in a famous trio, chiefly active from 1930 to 1935, that he is remembered as an ensemble player... Thibaud never retired; he appeared in London when he was over 70 and gave his last concert at Biarritz ten days before he was killed in an air crash on his way to a concert tour in the East Asia." W.W. Cobbett and Noël Goodwin in Grove Music Online. Item #27080. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
