      Vezni publishing house 1921 - Complete 3th year of Vezni, Nos 1-20 in 19 issues, all of them uncut. 356 p.; Nos 1-10 125/165 mm, Nos 11-20 135/175 mm. A collector's set. See the picture of one unfolded copy, all issues are in the same quality - just folded, no brackets (except Nos 3, 6, 7 which has nailed with one bracket each), no glue; some minors stains and yellowed outlines; paper stays fragile; slightly rounded corners; one worn edge - No 17/18 (see partially unfolded on the photo); one ink stain at the down-right corner of No 16; missing small part from the front of No 1; very good to near fine, regarding the cheap paper. Even in the second book of "Scales" (Nos. 2, September 30, 1919) Geo Milev publishes the manifesto "Directions and goals" (p. 17), through it stated mission of "Scales" and the way in which the magazine will be moving in Bulgarian name of avant-garde culture. The idea of Geo Milev is to create a modern European magazine, a proud successor of Bulgarian magazines such as "Thought" and "Artist". The newspaper published not only works of Bulgarian authors, but also translated works from English, German, French. Starts mainly in the field of symbolism in the second and third anniversary already passed the ideas of expressionism, whose chief representative in our literature is the editor - Geo Milev. Here as he says in the manifesto of the second number: ¿It should reach the coast of art - fine art. Bulgarian literature must go out by itself - out of the tradition, of national, contemporary and popular. (.) Because comes era of full unification in art: this is the most important process in the history of modern art. Bulgarian art Bulgarian literature should not, and can not, remain an exception - it must unify itself with other literatures - should reach other literatures. It means to leave the tradition of national, contemporary and popular - cease to be a bit literature. To this target aspirations of a group of Bulgarian writers who gray rumor of epithets called "modernists". To this must be directed aspirations of Bulgarian writer, otherwise it will remain backward - a past lifetime¿. Unfortunately this third (unfinished) year becomes the last for this remarkable Bulgarian magazine. See Domenico Jacono "Bulgarian modernism, books and magazines 1919-1934" cat. No. 1, p. 11. Broadside, measuring 29 by 41 inches, closely framed. $6000.Very large original movie poster produced for the 1921 re-release of D.W. Griffith's pioneering film, The Birth of a Nation.Griffith's dramatization of the American Civil War and Reconstruction, based on Thomas Dixon's 1905 novel The Clansmen, was immediately controversial for its racist depiction of African Americans and its heroic portrayal of the Ku Klux Klan; it is now considered instrumental in the revival of the KKK in the 1920s. The poster, composed entirely of text in red and black within a black border, reads: ""The Supreme Picture / Of All Time! / Birth / Of A / Nation / D.W. Griffith's / 8th Wonder of the World / 18,000 People / 3,000 Horses / 3 Years to Produce!"" First released in 1915, the 1921 re-release elicited the comment ""The supreme picture of all time"" from the New York Mail, used here as the opening line. This rare poster may be an example of a job printing for a local movie house. Fine condition.

"The 47th Bengal Infantry was raised in 1901 as a class Regt. recruiting only Jat Sikhs. Two years later it was re-titled as 47th Siklhs and then, in 1922, it became the 5th (Duke of Connaught's Own), 11th Sikh Regt. This is a narrative account of its time on the Western Front (where it suffered 1591 casualties, of whm 227 were fatal), and then its move to Egypt and Mesopotamia for the remainder of the war". Includes appendices containing Roll of Honour, Honours and Awards, list of British and Indian officers who served, casualty statistics, and a note on establishments. Perkins notes just two maps. Extraordinarily uncommon

      1921. Hi, This lot is a 1921 Original Hardback Wisden This year is one of the rarest Hardbacks I find and very under rated in the rarity stakes , this is rare but only in just Good Condition, but very nicely priced. The boards are quite dark and marked , the spine cloth is also a bit dark and the gilt is a touch darkened , the front gilt is bright. Internally the pastedowns follow the dark theme and the hinges are weak but not broken some mesh can be seen between page 2 and 3. Some pencil markings inside. One thing that is special is that to the title page it states ""To C Stewart Caine from Sydney Pardon"" so the current editor to a future editor so this was once owned by an editor of Wisden. Nice inside. Excellent Photoplate and a unique Wisden but condition could be better.

The 1921 has touched up gilts and restored hinges, otherwise very nice indeed with clean boards, the 1922 is a poor year condition wise , this one is better than average, it has a line to the spine but better than average hinges, the 1924 has some wear but very nice inside,mark to the rear board. 7/10s for their respective years, all photoplates within.

Original black fabricoid, title in gilt on front cover, 141 [4] pp., dedication, foreword, introduction, preface, illustrated, plates, portraits. The Tenth Cavalry was organized in 1866 when Congress provided for black regiments in the reorganization bill of 1866. The Act of Increase and Fix the Military Peace Establishment of the United States provided "that to the six regiments of cavalry now in service, there shall be added four regiments, two of which shall be composed of colored men." These two became the Ninth and Tenth Regiments of Cavalry. Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson arrived at Fort Leavenworth to organize the regiment which at that time only existed on the statute books. Glass covers the organization and composition of the unit, its early field service, being Buffalo Soldiers in Arizona, and combat in Cuba and the Philippines. Also involved in the Punitive Expedition after Pancho Villa raided Columbus, New Mexico. Appendix A of this work provides the engagements of the regiment and brief extracts from the Regimental Returns. This regimental history is not widely known and is quite rare. Not in Eberstadt, Howes, Decker, etc. Only 100 copies were printed for friends and family. Interestingly, out of the numerous photographs in this book, only one depicts the "old-timers," which includes some black soldiers. Inked signatures and addresses of some of the unit's members are on the last blank pages, including Oscar Knox, to whom this copy belonged. Very good copy.

      London: Hutchinson and co., n.d. [1921]. Signed Limited Edition. Folio. Bound in publisher's original quarter blue cloth over pale blue cloth boards, beveled edges with gilt ribbon motif to centre of front board, and gilt titles to spine; front and bottom edges uncut, blue and gilt marbled endpapers. Illustrated with 64 of his portaits in black and white photogravure. Dual language, French and English. With bookplate. In a limited edition of 300, this is number 1. Together with the author's signature to the limitation notice, and the author's bookplate opposite to half title, this is understood to be the author's own copy. Armorial bookplate, "Veritas Vincti Spes Mea In Deo", "P.A. Laszlo de Lombos, MVO". Binding is a little rubbed, bumping and some fraying to corners, bumping to spine ends, cloth is a little grubby. Internally clean, free from foxing, with some dampstaining throughout. The plates, and their labelled tissue guards, show well. De Laszlo was a significant, though now somewhat forgotten, portrait painter, perhaps one of the most significant of the late Victorian and early twentieth century periods. His subjects were typically aristocratic, or royal, or high ranking members of the Catholic church; this volume includes a representative sample, featuring the King Edward VII, Prince Chlodwig Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst, and Pope Leo XIII - the last of which made his name in Europe. He lived and worked in Hungary for many years, though his fame spread across Europe, until the death of his young daugther in 1903 led him to move to London and become naturalized as a British citizen. In 1909, Edward VII made him a Member of the Royal Victorian Order. Despite this, he was interned during the First World War. Following Walter Sickert, de Laszlo was made President of the Royal Society of British Arists in 1930, demonstrating the esteem in which his work was held.

Here his 12 lovely gouache plates illustrate Henry-Jacques' 12 poems, each commemorating an aspect of Parisian life during the war years, from ""Départ"" through ""Victoire."" Each is signed in the stone by Lepape. Text in French. Portfolio silk tie broken but present, laid in. A few short splits to portfolio flaps and spine, joints sound; plates fine. A near-fine copy of this lovely work.

To editor Periton Maxwell, at the time evidently associated with LESLIE'S MAGAZINE, two signed in full, two signed simply "Richard," relating to publishing and personal matters and forwarding manuscript submissions (not present). A sampling of the correspondence reads as follows: "Thank you for the copies of Judge, which reached me this morning ... I hope, by the way, that in sending you the stories enclosed herein [not present] (The Girl With the Brown-Paper Parcel & The Soul of the Apple) that you will not feel that I am snowing you under with MS. I am sending them because of a prospectus from Leslie's which I rec'd a short time ago ....''; "You will have seen the recent statement of a school-master that the boy's mind is a 'pig-sty,' only to be kept in order by severe discipline in Latin & Greek. The enclosed lines are by way of rebuttal on behalf of the school-boy ....''; and "Here I am once more wallowing innocently with the bears--& this is just a line to thank you for the friendly way you helped me, during my little emergency ... I know you'll be glad to hear that I am to get my hundred a week from Block, had no difficulty at all about it ....'' Accompanied by a copy of the uncommon pamphlet, AN OPEN LETTER FROM RICHARD LE GALLIENNE TO LAURENCE J. GOMME RELATING TO THE LITTLE BOOK-SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (New York, 1915, printed at the Village Press). Born Paul Bernard, the Jewish playwright and novelist was a member of the influential circle, La Revue Blanche. Well known in Paris, his witty “bon mots were so famous that for three decades he was credited with many of the jokes current in France. Bernard wrote several novels, notably Les Mémoires d’un jeune homme rangé (1899)… he is best remembered, however, as the author of such hilarious comedies as Les pieds nickelés (1895)… He was arrested by the Nazis during WWII but was released following the intervention of influential friends” in 1943. Weakened by his imprisonment he died in Paris four years later (Encyclopedia Judaica). Featured in this exquisite limited edition collection are 12 loose pochoir color plates La Démobilisation, Le Matin Dans le Parc, Le Répétition Générale, Le Golf, Le Ciné, Le Bal de Sauvages, Racing, A L’Oasis, La Jupe Lumineuse, Le Samedi a Médrano, La Rythmique, Chez L’Antiquaire, and Les Ailes Dans le Vent. He takes her to his desert tent castle and seduces the reluctant beauty. Only when she is kidnapped by desert bandits does she realize she has fallen in love with him, and he is to her rescue! This film made Rudolph Valentino a star and the image of him as The Sheik is now iconic. He appears on this card in his most famous costumes with leading lady Agnes Ayres. Dennis.This is an interesting association copy inscribed by the publisher George Robertson to Captain Arthur W. Jose. Loosely tipped in is a doggerel note from "P.R." (possibly the author P.R. Stephensen) thanking the owner for loaning the book, and lamenting the difficulty of earning a quid by writing rhymes for children.A Book for Kids comprises playful verse and rhyme with two short stories, respectively titled 'The Little Red House' and 'The Boy Who Rode into the Sunset'. It is a fresh and sometimes eccentric production, enhanced by the author's simple yet confident line drawings. The striking cover illustration was also created by Dennis.'C.J. Dennis' one lasting contribution to children's literature was A Book for Kids, which, with its entertaining prose, rollicking verse and the author's own naïve but charming drawings, had enjoyed constant popularity ever since its first appearance in 1921' (McVitty, Authors and Illustrators of Australian Children's Books p. 57).The two short stories offer an innovative contrast to the literary conventions of the time, and appeal directly to the imagination of younger readers. It was he who made the approach, in the most sublime and unexpected way. I had just given a reading of a realist fable at the Nouvelle Revue Française (in March 1920), called "Le Mannequin d'acajou [The Mahogany Mannequin]," something I never suspected could interest that observer, that fierce admirer - yes, subjugated and mistrustful - of the Duchess of Guermantes, Oriano - a hateful creature worthy of public exposure...Marcel Proust wrote to me straight after the reading of Le Mannequin d'acajou. He also sent me some of his books, with handsome inscriptions. I replied, of course, to Marcel Proust, but I never went to see him. Corresponding with him was important to me, but I could not resolve myself to go and visit him at his bedside... above all, to go and sit among so many others whose delights would never be my own. Obviously, there was no question of meeting Marcel Proust at midnight in the Ritz, where the staff did not know me. Was I wrong? In any case, Marcel Proust bore me no ill-will. He must have understood, guessed, my motives. Not only did he keep writing to me, but he also wrote to others with the intention of helping me."In fact, after the publication of this short story, Proust put forward Salmon's name along with Rivière's for the two Blumenthal scholarships. Unfortunately, Salmon had already passed the upper age limit and it was André Thérive who got the second scholarship. André Salmon would not find out about this support until 1951, when he read Proust's unpublished letters to Edmond Jaloux in the Revue de Paris: "Let me pick out what he was kind enough to write on my account, even in the midst of a burning fever...: 'Your conclusion thus seems to be Salmon, which by the way is the same one I came to with Gide. I find that the reasoning they applied (the prize would allow him to stop doing journalism) is very misguided. Talent is reason enough in itself...'" (cf. A. Salmon, Souvenirs sans fin, pp. 807-809). In dieser Zeit arbeitete er als Gebrauchsgraphiker.

She is 69 Deliveries from just 2000 copies and is illustrated including 573 color plates and 148 sketches depicting models of fashion designers. Upon publication, these luxury publications "are for bibliophiles and worldly aesthetes" (Françoise Tétart-Vittu "good Gazette of tone" in the fashion dictionary, 2016). Printed on fine laid paper, they use a typeface created specifically for the magazine by Georges Peignot, the Cochin character, taken in 1946 by Christian Dior.
