        The investor's pocket manual.

New York: The Financial Press, 1921. 16mo (15.5 cm, 6.1"). 272 pp. Vol. XIII, no. 4 (May, 1921) of a monthly publication offering "current statistics, records and high and low prices of stocks and bonds of railroad, industrial, and mining corporations, also grain, cotton, coffee and provisions." The publisher advertised in contemporary magazines that copies of this "real help to investors" would be "furnished FREE by any investment house . . . on request," and the front wrapper of the present example identifies it as coming from Kurtz Brothers Bankers and Brokers at 1421 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA. There is a great deal here on the structure and value of many, many individual companies.    => These ephemeral guidebooks are not widely institutionally held in the U.S., although a different, quarterly publication of the same title (published by E.A. Pierce & Co.) appears to be somewhat more common. Publisher's printed yellow paper wrappers; creased and lightly soiled, with inked date on spine and pencilled annotations on back wrapper. Text block just starting to pull away from wrappers. Pages age-toned; three leaves separated. => A useful snapshot of the American economy in the spring of 1921.

        Three Soldiers.

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1921 - Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front in orange, top edge orange. With the dust jacket. A fine copy in a superb jacket, only very slightly rubbed at the ends and corners and with the faintest sunning to spine panel. First edition, first printing, first state (three blank leaves to front, none at back and the textual error on p. 213 reading "signing", later corrected to "singing"), second issue jacket (with review excerpts in place of the first issue publisher's blurbs; including a quotation from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle which was replaced with one from the Stars and Stripes' review in the third issue). This is an exceptional copy in jacket of Dos Passos's stark First World War novel, rare thus. Literary critic H. L. Mencken praised the book and its powerful influence in a review published in The Smart Set (October 1922): "Until Three Soldiers is forgotten and fancy achieves its inevitable victory over fact, no war story can be written in the United States without challenging comparison with it—and no story that is less meticulously true will stand up to it. At one blast it disposed of oceans of romance and blather. It changed the whole tone of American opinion about the war; it even changed the recollections of actual veterans of the war. They saw, no doubt, substantially what Dos Passos saw, but it took his bold realism to disentangle their recollections from the prevailing buncombe and sentimentality." Potter 2.       Paris: Librairie Centrale des Beaux-Arts, 1921. A knockout collection of decorative prints by a fabulous, obscure Parisian designer called Auguste Thomas. Thomas' work is remarkable for his skillful use of verdant, floral patterns combined with dynamic animal forms - springing elk, nestling birds, a greyhound in hot pursuit of a hare. In Formes et Couleurs, we see a vivid palette, boldly experimental work contrasting earthy tones and natural blues with vibrant (seemingly electric) synthetic pinks and oranges. The pochoir process of stencil printing further heightens the effect. And yet, despite the designer's audacity, Thomas' results are wonderfully harmonious, preserving judicious balance within wild juxtapositions of colour and form. Issued as a creative endeavour unto itself, the portfolio also provides a selection of sixty-seven designs for use by interior decorators for furnishing upholstery and textile prints. In this respect, it is a pleasing example of free-form design for practical application. Original folding portfolio with colour onlay containing letterpress titling leaf and 20 pochoir plates measuring 453 mm x 314 mm., some wear to head and tail of the portfolio spine, titling leaf mildly browned, otherwise beautifully preserved.

The Emperor Jones, Diff'rent, The Straw

New York: Boni and Liveright, 1921. First Edition, First Printing. SIGNED by Eugene O'Neill on the half title, a book containing three of O'Neill's plays, including his breakthrough play, "The Emperor Jones." A 775-copy signed limited edition of "The Emperor Jones" (without the other two plays) was published in 1928 and is readily obtainable, while signed copies of the play's true first edition, offered here, are remarkably scarce. Small 8vo (7 5/8 inches / 19.3 cm), x, [2], 285 pages, in publisher's original paper-covered boards. Corners bumped, spine darkened, with some fraying to top of spine, some soiling to front board, and edge wear. Bookplate removed from front paste down. Overall, a Very Good copy, lacking the rare dust jacket. Uncommon to the market, and copies signed by O'Neill are especially elusive. SCARCE. "The Emperor Jones" helped to cement O'Neill's reputation as a talented, provocative playwright who would later go on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1936. The play tells the story of an African-American who breaks out of jail, stows away on a ship, lands on a Caribbean island, and declares himself emperor. Performed by the Provincetown Players, the play opened November 1, 1920, in New York to great critical acclaim. Charles S. Gilpin played Emperor Jones. "His is an uncommonly powerful and imaginative performance, in several respects unsurpassed this season in New York," wrote the influential drama critic Alexander Woollcott in The New York Times. The play later went on tour, with the great Paul Robeson playing Emperor Jones in a 1924 London production.

The Friendly Arctic. The Story of Five Years in Polar Regions. Illustrated.

New York, NY: The Macmillan Company, 1921. FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED by the author. Octavo, pp. xxxi; 784. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board, in a stylish photographic dustjacket. Illustrated with two fold out maps, and several photographs. Fore edge and tail edge roughly trimmed. Cloth remains in very good condition, some damp staining extending along top half of front board, corners rubbed, endcaps pushed. Two large folding maps in pocket at rear, one in colour, uncoloured map somewhat tanned, pocket with small discoloured area. Internally clean, with very minor tanning to margins. Textblock has 'rippling' throughout, although this has not affected clarity of text/illustrations. Dustjacket in like, with some damp staining, dustiness, and light creasing to extremities; minor chips at ends of spine panel. Stefansson's weighty tome is an account of his five-year exploration of the Canadian Arctic, including his discovery of the edge of the continental shelf. It also recounts the details of his time spent investigating the lives of the Copper Inuit, including records of their supposedly all-meat diet. Author's inscription to flyleaf reads "Inscribed to Sidney Shea, by Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Pittsburgh, January 16 1921". Of his icy exploration, Stefansson is reputed to have said that "there are two kinds of Arctic problems, the imaginary, and the real. Of the two, the imaginary are the most real."
