Quarante Clichés-Glace, tirés sur les plaques provenant de la collection de M. Cuvelier

Paris: Maurice Le Garrec, 1921. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. Two letterpress bifolia: half-title and title, and 'Avertissement' and table. 40 cliché verre prints, originally 1854-1904, on smooth wove paper, each print with the stamp of Sagot-Le Garrec (L. 1766a), and numbered 44/150 in pencil on the reverse, the full sheets as published, hinged at the upper reverse corners, in mounts stamped with the plate numbers. 481 x 394 mm overall, plate sizes vary. Loose in original cloth-board portfolio, gilt-lettered on front. Some staining to text leaves, plates in fine condition. LIMITED EDITION, number 44 of 150 sets. A superb collection by the Parisian art dealer and publisher Maurice Le Garrec reprinting cliché verre plates from Corot, the master of the technique, Daubigny, Delacrois, Millet, and Rousseau, all masters of the Romantic and Barbizon schools. Though they are reproduced in black rather than the characteristic brown inks of the 19th-century impressions, the scarce portfolio increased public awareness of the printmaking process. See Alain Paviot, Le cliché-verre. Corot, Delacroix, Millet, Rousseau, Daubigny, Paris 1995, pp. 9-14. Comprising: J. B. C. Corot (19): La Petite Soeur; Le Petit Cavalier sous Bois; Le Songeur; La Jeune Fille et la Mort; Le Grand Cavalier sous Bois; Le Petit Berger, 1ere planche; Le Petit Berger, 2me planche; Le Jardin de Péricles ; L'Allée des Peintres; Griffonnage; Le Grand Bucheron; La Tour d'Henri VIII; Souvenir d'Ostie; Les Jardins d'Horage; Jeune Mère a l'Entrée d'un Bois; Les Arbres dans la Montagne; Un Déjeuner dans la Clairiére; La Ronde Gauloise; Souvenir du Bas-Brau (L.D. 41-3, 45-6, 49-50, 52-60, 65-6, 73).  C.         [Photo Album]: Women in College

Massachusetts, 1921. Very Good. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 7" x 10". Stapled black cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 262 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1" and 6" x 8", some with captions. Very good album with some chips and tears on the boards and leaves, with near fine photographs some with fading.A photo album compiled by a young woman attending college in Massachusetts beginning in 1919. From street signs it appears she went to Fitchburg Normal School, now Fitchburg State University, in North Central Massachusetts. Many of the photos show the women posed around campus with one photo of the four women huddled together smiling which reads, "fresh freshman," another shows them climbing a sign for Pearl Hill Road. They also visited friends, both men and women, at Harvard. Two photos show members of Fitchburg's girls' basketball team with a caption which reads, "Rah, Rah, Rah!" and another which reads "the victorious five 3 cheers!" Many of the photos show the women posing and being silly with such captions as: "naughty, naughty," "why Vera!," and "asleep at the switch." The women are seen in fashionable outfits, school uniforms, and hats throughout the album. One particularly intriguing image shows a woman, her hat in hand, passionately kissing a female schoolmate with a caption that read: "you mouthwatering Sappho." The women in this set of photos are flirty and smiling and posing on a bridge in a wooded area. After graduating the complier became a school teacher in 1921 and there are photos of her with her class of younger girls posed in a school yard and during a school play. Other photos include family snapshots and vacation photos featuring one of the women posed in her new car and another of a woman with a baseball bat.An compelling collection of photos focusing on a woman's time in college and her relationships with her classmates.

Eight ALS by Lev L'vovich Tolstoy (1869-1945), the son of Lev Tolstoy, to Jacques Patin (1883-1948), the editor of Figaro

Paris and Wiesbaden 1921 - Eight single leaves, some folded. Very good, with exception of one letter, with tear and some loss to text. The son of Lev Tolstoy, Lev L'vovich Tolstoy was a firm believer in his father's ideals in his youth, but later became increasingly opposed to his philosophical and ethical ideas. He studied sculpture with Rodin and tried, without success, to become a published writer, as well as writing about his childhood and impressions of his father. In 1918 he emigrated, living in Paris before eventually settling in Sweden. The letters included here date to a period when he wrote articles on his father and was making a difficult living as a journalist. Among other things, they contain his negative reaction to his mother's memoirs, discuss his own writing and plans to publish his recollections, and detail his financial woes. Daniel Chester French Adds Lincoln Memorial Statue to His Biography for Who’s Who

1921 - Printed Entry for Who's Who in America, with handwritten correction, signed by French at bottom. October 1, 1921. New York City. 1 p. 8 1/2 x 10 3/4 in. In 1899, Albert Nelson Marquis (1855-1943) published the first edition of Who's Who in America with biographical information on 8,602 "leaders and achievers" from "every significant field of endeavor." For the twelfth volume, to be published in 1922 or 1923, French received a printed version of his prior entry with a request for updates. French added his latest and greatest accomplishment, the completion in 1920 of his sculpture for the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. Historic BackgroundThe Lincoln Memorial Committee had selected French in 1914 to create a Lincoln statue as part of the memorial to be designed by architect Henry Bacon (1866-1924). French was the personal choice of Bacon, with whom he had collaborated for nearly 25 years. French began work in December 1914. Over the next two years, he worked on models in clay and plaster at Chesterwood, making various changes. In October 1916, he completed a six-foot plaster model, originally to be scaled up to a 12-foot bronze image. After consulting with Bacon in the memorial then under construction, they decided that a much larger 19-foot sculpture of marble was more appropriate. It took a full year for the Piccirilli Brothers in New York City to transfer French's design to marble blocks. The statue was assembled in the memorial in 1920, but not formally dedicated until May 30, 1922.Volume 12 of Who's Who in America contains sketches of 24,278 persons in 3,520 pages.Complete Transcript [with additions by French in bold]FRENCH, Daniel Chester, sculptor; b. Jean Lébédeff (born Ivan Lebedev in Bogorodskoye), began his studies under Fernand Cormon at the Ecole Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1909 and became a noted graphic designer and book illustrator in Paris between the wars, acclaimed for his wood-cuts. A well-known anarchist, his work was exhibited at the 1926 International Exhibition of Revolutionary Art of the West in Moscow; his work would later be featured in the 1979 retrospective "Paris Moscou 1900-1930" at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Vagabonds was a tremendously influential work by Gorky, here in French from the translation by Ivan Stannik. The work, with strong autobiographical elements, is comprised of four short stories featuring Russian vagabonds, titled: Malva; Konovalov; Tchelkache; and Mon Compagnon. The provenance of this copy, given the extra-illustration laid in, would seem to be Ivan Lamberty, a noted art patron and collector in Brussels. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
