Wright, Frances ].
New-York: Printed for E. Bliss and E. White, , 1921. New-York: Printed for E. Bliss and E. White, 1921 First American edition with the author's additions and corrections from the first London edition. Views of Society and Manners in America is a memoir in letters by the Scottish-born abolitionist Frances Wright on government, culture, slavery, and women's rights in the United States. . Original half black morocco over marbled boards in red, green, and black; spine lettered in gilt. Expertly rebacked to style. Octavo. Some toning to boards. Later bookplate on front pastedown. Foxing throughout, but overall a very good, tight copy of an important work. Frances Wright (1795-1852) became a citizen of the United States in 1825 and dedicated her life to advocating for women's rights, the abolition of slavery, socialism, and universal education. Wright was a playwright, newspaper editor, political lecturer, and memoirist, though her writing and public speaking were ardently opposed by many who thought her outspoken nature was inappropriate for a woman. Between 1825 and 1830, she attempted to establish the Nashoba Commune, a socialist utopian community in Tennessee where enslaved people could live and receive an education. The project failed, but Wright is remembered as a dedicated social reformer, and was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1994.

Ercole Patti
Edizioni Alpes, 1921. Ercole Patti. Tutte le opere, 2019). Bell'esemplare. ITA

Vserossiiskii zemskii soiuz (All-Russian Zemstvo Union)
Constantinople (Istanbul), 1921. Quartos (32 × 20 cm). Original sewn pamphlets with cloth spine strip; mimeographed or hectographed wrappers; mimeographed text to rectos; 56 and 152 leaves. Numerous charts, diagrams (affixed to leaves), and additional printed ephemera bound with the text. Worn; front wrapper and first page of one issue detached; light soil and staining to the second issue; still good or better. Rare two-volume report on the activities of the All-Russian Zemstvo Union, an organization originally founded in 1914 to care for the sick and wounded of World War I. While it ceased operation following the Tsar's abdication in 1917, an interim committee was established in Krasnodar and Feodosia, Crimea, while the White Army held their position there. After the evacuation of the White forces and their families to Constantinople and nearby regions, it was re-established there in 1919 under A. S. Khripunov and sought to provide aid to Russian refugees in today's Turkey, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Egypt, and beyond. It appears to have been dissolved in 1924, after which many of its leaders joined the Zemstvos and Towns Relief Committee (Zemgor), another humanitarian organization aiding Russian refugees during and after the Russian Civil War (1918-1922), and based primarily in Paris. Functioning as a kind of de facto "ministry of human affairs" in emigration, the Zemgor set up shelters, canteens, schools, orphanages, legal aid, and employment offices for the refugees. The present bulletins lament the lack of funds and the demoralizing news coming from Russ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Light soil and foxing to wrappers, else very good. Two volumes of this scarce bulletin by three Russian charitable organizations, which provided relief to Russian refugees in Constantinople during the Russian Civil War (1918-1922). By the end of 1920, Russian refugees in modern day Turkey numbered about 150,000 civilians and 60,000 military, most in difficult financial circumstances and many in need of medical attention, resulting in a humanitarian crisis. The Russian Red Cross, as well as the All-Russian Zemstvo Union and the All-Russian Towns Union (all set up during WWI to aid with the war effort) became a kind of de facto "ministry of human affairs" in emigration, collaborating in setting up shelters, canteens, schools, orphanages, legal aid and employment offices. This two-volume publication contains the overview of their work, with refugee statistical information, and the activities, goals and accomplishments of the Central Committee in their work to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Constantinople and in the neighboring nations such as Bulgaria and Yugoslavia.
