London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., [1920]. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., [1920].. Octavo, pp. [1-8] [1] 2-303 [304: printer's imprint] + 8-page publisher's catalogue dated "1124" inserted at rear, original red cloth, spine panel stamped in gold, front cover stamped in blind. First edition, second issue with inserted publisher's catalogue dated "1124." 1250 copies printed, this copy being among those comprising the first of several reissues of 650 to 750 sets of first edition sheets. Lindsay's masterpiece. "Lindsay's A VOYAGE TO ARCTURUS is one of the most extraordinary works of literature, let alone fantasy, ever written. In form and in some of its symbolic techniques it is highly indebted to the work of George MacDonald: but for sheer inventiveness and intensity of imagination its burns like some literary supernova." - Colin Greenland, Scottish Fantasy Literature, p. 153. "A classic allegorical romance in which the landscapes and inhabitants of the planet Tormance provide an externalization of the moral and metaphysical questions that preoccupied the author. Its incarnate theological system influenced Lewis's OUT OF THE SILENT PLANET (1938), and it also bears some similarity to George Macdonald's LILITH (1895), although it is very much a work sui generis." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 2-72. "Some of the imagery is borrowed from Norse mythology (Surtur and Muspel) but the metaphysics that is gradually elaborated is basically a transformed evolutionary theory that applies a harsh metaphorical Darwinism to the business of personal intellectual development. Photographs.
1920. xx. <br /><br />This is a collection of 340 gelatin silver prints, in 5 x 7 format, of a safari undertaken by an American, probably in the 1920s. The photographs are no longer in any particular order, but through them we can trace the Great White Hunter's progress through the Suez Canal, down the Red Sea to Mombasa Kenya, up to Nairobi, then into the Serengeti on a hunting expedition organized by a travel company called Safariland. He was a bespectacled, jowly fellow, who appears in photographs taken at many different locations. There are also dozens of photos of street life and buildings in African cities and villages (as well as several scenes from Genoa, Italy, where the Great White Hunter apparently stopped enroute to Africa.) About 150 photographs document the slaughter that marked the climax of the expedition. The Great White Hunter, other whites, and African bearers pose with zebra, African buffalo, various species of African antelope, cheetah, rhino, game birds, and smaller game. One particularly horrific series of 22 photos documents the killing and dismemberment of an elephant, the Great White Hunter proudly posing at the end with two sets of tusks. Only two of the photos contain any clues as to the man's identity. One is an image of the American sculptor Frank Tolles Chamberlain inscribed to a "Mr. Lincoln." The second is a print measuring 6 x 2 1/2 inches (the only one in the collection not in 5 x 7 format. The back of the print is stamped, "Copyright. New Crystal Finish. The Owl. Lewiston Maine." Owl is a chain of drug stores operating in Maine since the … [Click Below for Full Description]

PERSHING, JOHN J.
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1920. FIRST EDITION. An outstanding presentation copy inscribed by Pershing: To M. le Maréchal Joffre with sincere esteem and affectionate regards, and with gratitude for his friendship and wise counsel. John J. Pershing Washington D.C. Pershing, who led the American forces in World War I, presented this book to his counterpart in the French military. Joseph Joffre was commander-in-chief of the French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is most famous for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive Battle of the Marne in September 1914. In late 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France and moved to an advisory role. In April 1917 Joffre led the French mission to the United States to secure America s entry into the war. He recommended that the Americans lead their own force in the conflict, as Pershing insisted, rather than being integrated into the existing commands. On the final day of the mission he met with Pershing, just named commander of the American Expeditionary Force, telling him that Pershing can always count on me for anything in my power. Joffre became head of the Supreme War Council in 1918, coordinating the Allied war effort from Versailles. This is Pershing s Final Report to Secretary of War Newton Baker, presenting his summary account of the events of the Great War. The work is lavishly illustrated with graphics and maps describing military action and maneuvers, organizational structures, and orders of battle. This classic w … [Click Below for Full Description]

John Wisden
Hi, This lot is a 1920 Original Hardback Wisden This Wisden, a hard one to find, is in OK condition but a fabulous price. The boards are very dark, the gilt is bright to the front but darkened to the spine, the page block i also very dark. A couple of marks to the boards. The hinges are OK, strong enough, but the internal book has again signs of darkness, there are a few annotations in the book and one oddity pages 261-284 are creased down the middle.

ITEM DESCRIPTION The Seven Parsons and the Small Iguanodon Gerald H Thayer 1920 G.P. Putnam's Son$3,000.00 an extremely rare children's book and probably one of the earliest to include a dinosaur as a character in the story; illustrated by Norman Jacobsen; fine or better condition although faint moisture mark to lower edge of both book covers and the title page has some tears to lower edge, also an indent to front cover surface to the right of the boy; in searching the internet I cannot find a single copy of this for sale anywhere, no record of a copy being sold at past auction and even Google search for this EXACT title yields less than 20 results and most results are library related from the year 1920 (like Publisher's Weekly or a library receiving a copy at that time) ___________________________________________ COMBINED SHIPPING ? 1920. DONALD MENNIE CHINA NORTH & SOUTH A Series of Vandyk Photogravures Illustrating the Picturesque Aspect of Chinese Life and Surroundings Published by A. S. Watson & Co. Shanghai (The Shaghai Pharmacy Ltd.) Second & Revised Edition 1920 Cord bound album with stiff card covers with black lettering and photo pasted on the front.Undated, though 1920s. Title page and 30 leaves each with a tipped on Vandyk photogravure with printed captions. Some spliting along the sides of the spine back strip, and an inch missing from the lower spine, all holding together well enough. Contents and photgravures all very good. Donald Mennie (1875/1876 - 1941) was a Scottish bussinessman and amateur photographer. He arrived in Beijing in 1899; how and why is unfortunately unknown. What is known, is that he first worked as an assistant in the firm of Mactavish & Lehman & Co in Beijing. After this, he joined the company of A.S. Watson & Co in Shanghai and eventually became the firm's managing director. In his photographs Mennie seemed to have tried to capture a romantic vision of 'antique China', featuring dusty caravans of horses or camels, old palaces and authentic street scenes, all in and around Beijing. Between 1914 and 1927 he published several books covering his photographic work, including The Pageant of Peking (1920), Glimpses of China (1920), China, North and South (1922) and The Grandeur of the Gorges (1926). By these publications his work became better known and after 1900 he became proposed as a member of the Royal Geographic Society and Pictures of Peking. Mennie spent the last ye … [Click Below for Full Description]

[RADICAL & PROLETARIAN LITERATURE] LE PRADE, Ruth (editor); SINCLAIR, Upton (introduction)
Pasadena: Upton Sinclair, 1920. Hardcover. Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner, Max Eastman, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Carl Sandburg, Siegfried Sassoon, Horace Traubel, and Israel Zangwill, many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword, along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw (who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs"). An interesting pair of copies inscribed to Gardner (1884-1968), acclaimed stage actress and the first actress to form her own production company. Moved by his circumstances and deeply influenced by his speeches, she visited him in prison in 1920, bringing him an autographed photo and beginning a correspondence that would last through the mid-1920's. In a December 21, 1920 letter, she writes: "Let me tell you that I was surprised to find my emotional self somewhat unaffected while I listened to you talk. I know the reason now. It is the same with you as it was with Epictetus, prison walls cannot confine the spirit -- the mind is ever free. So, in a way, I did not feel your plight as keenly as I would that of another who had little vision, little intelligence, little understanding about his body being so small a part of the real him that his confinement was of the physical order only." While the "special edition" of 500, with signed bookplate by Debs, appears with some frequency, inscribed copies of Debs and the Poets are genuinely uncommon. Two octavo volumes (18.75cm); maroon cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on sp … [Click Below for Full Description]
