He was educated at New College School, and was elected scholar of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he matriculated on 7 February 1693, graduating B.A. in 1697, and M.A. in 1700. Rogers took orders but did not obtain his fellowship by succession until 1706. In 1710 he proceeded B.D. About 1704 he was presented to the vicarage of Buckland, Berkshire, where he was popular as a preacher. In 1712 he became lecturer of St Clement Danes in The Strand, London, and later of Christ Church, Newgate Street, with St Leonard's, Foster Lane. In 1716 he received the rectory of Wrington, Somerset, and resigned his fellowship in order to marry. In 1719 he was appointed a canon, and in 1721 sub-dean of Wells Cathedral. He seems to have retained all these appointments until 1726, when he resigned the lectureship of St Clement Danes. Written by Himself. by Daniel Defoe Hardcover First Irish Edition - Dublin: Printed for Patrick Dugan Bookseller on Cork Hill, 1719. (true first edition London: W. Taylor, 1719; in most early editions, Daniel Defoe is not named as the author but Crusoe is indicated as the author, i.e. "written by himself". Similar to Gulliver's Travels in which Lemuel Gulliver is named as the author rather than Jonathan Swift.)First Irish edition of the sequel to the Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, regarded by many scholars as the first bona fide novel specifically written in English! No copies listed on Worldcat.org/OCLC! Possibly a scarce edition, none for sale at this writing, only a parody printed by the same printer/seller, Patrick Dugan. This book probably had a significantly lower print-run in Ireland than in England.Binding/Collation/Condition: Leather 12mo or small octavo 6.5" x 4", 278 pages. Cambridge style binding with rectangle and ornaments on the corners. Appears to have been recased at some point, i.e. new spine with original boards. Michael Bernhard Valentini, Johann Theodor de Bry & Matthaus Merian
Frankfurt, 1719. This hand-colored botanical engraving is from Michael Bernhard Valentini's "Viridarium Reformatum, seu Regnum Vegetabile: Krauter Buch or [Newly Revised Garden of the Plant Kingdom: Herb Book]". The work was published by Valentini in Frankfurt in 1719. --- Valentini's work was largely based upon Johann Theodor de Bry & Matthaus Merian's "Florilegium renovatum et auctum" from 1641. It is widely agreed that he acquired de Bry & Merian's plates to complete this work. He also added engravings after Mattioli, Bauhin and others for this "botanical library". --- Johann Theodor de Bry was an etcher, engraver and publisher from an established family of publishers and artists. His son-in-law was Matthaus Merian, with whom he completed the "Florilegium" of 1641. --- The work is in excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor imperfections to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions.

Daniel Defoe The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe 1719 This volume, the first book of the Robinson Crusoe Adventure, is a First edition, second printing, (called the second edition) of Defoe's masterpiece. The very rare first issue of 1000 books was published on April 25, 1719 and proved to be hugely popular resulting in a second issue of another 1000 books, published just two weeks later on May 9th. This book is one of those published in May. Printed for W. Taylor at the ship in Pater-Noster-Row, London, 1719. The book measures 5"x 7.75", 364 pages with 4 pages of publisher's advertisements at the back of the book. Very sound copy, professionally re-bound with the original full calf trade bindings with new spine and corners. The black label and gilt lettering on the spine reads 'Life of Crusoe'. Embossed decoration on the front and rear boards. This volume is lacking the frontispiece of Robinson Crusoe in goatskin breeches otherwise complete. Previous owner's signature and date on the title page. There is a brown mark just under the book owners name on the title page. Pages are sound and clean for their age (300 years old) with only odd spotting and minor worm damage on early pages.
