Seutter Matthias (1678 - 1757) Augsburg
Artist: Seutter Matthias ( - 1757) Augsburg; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca 1730. - technic: Copper print; colorit: original colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 49 x 55,5; - description: Map shows the citsy map and a total view as bird s eye view of Dresden with index of the map - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Manuscript; Toledo, Francesco de
1678. Peru?, 1678. Manuscript Copy of an Important Edition of Colonial-Era Peruvian Mining Laws [Manuscript]. [Toledo, Francisco de (1515-1582)]. Ordenanzas de Minas del Peru, Tomo Primero y Unico. Peru?, c. 1678. 183, [10] pp. Folio (12" x 8"). Contemporary tree sheep, "Ordenanza del Peru" in bold early hand to front board, thong ties, catches lacking. Moderate rubbing and light scuffing to boards and extremities, spine ends and corners bumped, hinges cracked. Moderate toning to interior, faint stains to a few leaves. A fair copy, with a title page and index, in an elegant secretarial hand, text to rectos and versos of all but a few leaves. $3,500. * The Spanish conquest of Peru opened a new era in mining. At first, the intense exploitation of its vast mineral wealth was regulated by a patchwork of pertinent laws from Las Siete Partidas and other sources. It was soon discovered that these laws were not flexible enough to address local conditions, most notably the use of indigenous labor. Over time Spanish laws were supplanted by viceregal decrees and orders. In 1574, Viceroy Francisco de Toledo organized these provisions into a body of Ordenanzes that was approved by King Phillipp II. Known as the Ordenanzas de Toledo, these circulated as manuscript copies. Later copies carry additions of later viceroys; the latest entry in our copy is dated 1678. An official updated edition was issued in 1683. This was followed by first printed edition of mining laws in 1783 (which applied to all of New Spain). Intended for a small circle of users, few of Peruvian manuscript editions were … [Click Below for Full Description]

VASCO, Giulio.
Principe di Piemonte, da Madama Reale Maria Giovanna Battista.. Racconto.

Matth?us Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

MONTFAUCON Bernard de
- Chez Pierre Granseigne, à Ville-Franche 1678, In 12 (8x14,3cm), (3) 40pp., relié. HOBBES, Thomas
1678. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "The condition of man . . . is a condition of war of everyone against everyone" - Thomas Hobbes An extremely rare first edition of Thomas Hobbes' last work! Thomas Hobbes was perhaps the most notable 17th-century English philosopher who conducted social studies and published historical theories on politics, physics, and law. While works such as 'Leviathan' and 'De Cive' were his most popular books, works such as 'Decameron Physiologicum' proved to be his most important. According to Robertson, this work "was a new set of dialogues on physical questions in the fashion of the earlier ones... And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had marinated the long quarter of a century of strife." (Macdonald & Hargreaves) 'Ten Dialogues of Natural Philosophy', as it is more commonly known, includes dozens of impressive topics of study including a discussion on the age of the earth. In this section, Hobbes makes mention of Johannes Kepler, with whom he agreed on the age of the earth. His astronomical studies included planetary motion, physics, effects of heat and cold on the earth, physical systems of the world such as water and air, magnets, and much more. This incredible work features the folding plate at the beginning which is most often lacking from this work. [Attributes: First Edition]

Near fine copies in very good dust jackets. The assemblage of the 22 tracts included here were designed to supply in a compact form a representative collection of the more brief and less ancient alchemical writers; in this respect, it may be regarded as a supplement to those large storehouses of Hermetic learning such as the Theatrum Chemicum, and that scarcely less colossal of Mangetus, the Bibliotheca Chemica Curiosa, which are largely concerned with the cream of the archaic literature, with the works of Geber and the adepts of the school of Arabia, with the writings attributed to Hermes, with those of … [Click Below for Full Description]

IN CONTEMPORARY VELLUM BINDING, FIRST TITLE PAGE PARTIALLY CUT AS SEEN FINE COPY OF THE FIRST YIDDISH EDITION OF THE BIBLE THE FIRST TWO Yiddish translations of the complete Old Testament appeared almost simultaneously in Amsterdam in 1678 - 1679. Yiddish translations and glossaries of parts of the Hebrew Bible had occupied an important place in Yiddish publishing from its beginnings in the first half of the sixteenth century. The earlier texts only covered those sections of the Old Testament which are part of the liturgy: the Torah (Pentateuch), the haftarot (selected portions of the Prophets and the hagiographer which are read in synagogue after the weekly portions of the Torah), the five megillot ('Scrolls', i. e., Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, and Esther), and Psalms. Uri Fayvesh Halevi, the first publisher to start printing a complete Yiddish Old Testament, had been influenced by the example of Sephardi Jews and Christians because they possessed good translations. In Amsterdam, where contacts between Ashkenazi Jews, Sephardim and Christians were more extensive than elsewhere, he became aware of the fact that others had a better knowledge of 'their' Bible than they themselves had. HOBBES, Thomas
1678 1st ed Thomas Hobbes Natural Philosophy Astronomy Physics Kepler w/ MAP “The condition of man . . . is a condition of war of everyone against everyone” – Thomas Hobbes An extremely rare first edition of Thomas Hobbes’ last work! Thomas Hobbes was perhaps the most notable 17th-century English philosopher who conducted social studies and published historical theories on politics, physics, and law. While works such as ‘Leviathan’ and ‘De Cive’ were his most popular books, works such as ‘Decameron Physiologicum’ proved to be his most important. According to Robertson, this work “was a new set of dialogues on physical questions in the fashion of the earlier ones And a demonstration of the equality of a straight line to the arc of the circle was, of course, thrown in at the end, to show him true as ever to the desperate purpose that had marinated the long quarter of a century of strife.” (Macdonald & Hargreaves) ‘Ten Dialogues of Natural Philosophy’, as it is more commonly known, includes dozens of impressive topics of study including a discussion on the age of the earth. Item number: #4530 Price: $5999 HOBBES, Thomas Decameron physiologicum: or, Ten dialogues of natural philosophy. By Thomas … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARINIS, Dominico de.
Rome, typis Iacobi Mascardi . sumptibus Ben Carrarae, 1678. 12mo, pp. [20], 143, [1, errata]; full-page woodcut of worm to *5v, woodcut initials and tailpieces; closed tear to title neatly repaired to verso without loss, some light damp staining (most noticeable at end) and very light browning; a very good copy in later vellum, edges sprinkled red.First edition of this scarce dissertation on worms focussing on the extraordinary case of a capuchin preacher from Pesaro who in 1677 passed an enormous worm in his urine, which upon subsequent examination was declared to be a serpent. The Dissertatio begins with a prefatory letter in Italian by Alessandro Cocci discussing the case of the capuchin friar Stefano da Cammerino who for 13 months had suffered from kidney pains and bloody and lumpy urine. Following treatment by Cocci and Cesare Cesareo, Cammerino passed, with excruciating pain, a long thin worm through his urinary meatus, initially trying to pull it out, only to break it in two, and then passing the remainder, to his subsequent great relief. The worm caused much local interest and Cocci describes how it was initially put on display to satisfy the curious, before being examined under a microscope. The conclusion of this examination was that the 'prodigio della natura' passed by Cammerino was in fact a serpent. As well as considering Cammerino's case, de Marinis examines polyps and worms more generally, discussing their generation, anatomy and size, and the parts of the human body affected by them and from which they are expelled.Krivatsy 7453; Wellcome IV, p. 55.
