        The Works of Geber,

London: Printed for N.E. by Thomas James; and are to be sold by Book-sellers., 1678. The Most Famous Arabian Prince and Philosopher. Faithfully Englished by R[ichard]. R[ussell]. a Lover of Chymistry. Octavo (170 × 105 mm). Early 20th-century tan half calf ruled in blind, brown cloth sides; double gilt fillets forming compartments to spine, black morocco label with gilt titles to second, date to foot gilt; marbled edges. Errata leaf to rear of volume. Later bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. Corners and spine rubbed, light mottling to rear board, marbling faded, tan-burns to pastedowns and binder's blanks, minor stain to signature B7.r, very small hole to C with minimal loss to letter on verso, spill-burn to F7, S with small hole and torn corner with no loss of text, wormhole to V with no loss of text; sporadic and faint marginal soiling. A very good copy. First edition in English of Geber's chemical corpus, De alchimia, taken by Sarton to represent "the best Latin knowledge on chemistry" available in the 13th century; this copy a variant imprint unrecorded by Wing, who only mentions an imprint reading "to be sold by Robert Clavel", though a genuinely rare book either way, with only three appearances at auction in nearly 60 years. De alchimia is here divided into five chapters. I. Of the Investigation or Search of Perfection [De investigatione perfectionis]. II. Of the Summe [sic] of Perfection, or of the Perfect Magistery. The First Book [Summa perfectionis]. III. Of the Sum of Perfection, or of the Perfect Magistery. The Second Book [ibid.]. IV. Of the Invention of Verity, or Perfection [De inventione veritatis sive perfectionis]. V. Of Furnaces, &c. With a Recapitulation of the Authors Experiments [De fornacibus]. According to the Fihrist of Ibn al-Nadim, Jabir b. Hayyan was born in Tarsus, flourished in Kufah in the early 'Abbasid era and died in 160 AH (776-7 CE), though other sources give his nisbah as al-Tusi and one even identifies him as a Sabaean convert to Islam, citing instead the nisbah al-Harrani. "It should be noted, however, that some historians and scholars who have addressed the 'Jabir-Geber' problem do not believe that the Latin Geber was de facto the ninth [sic] century Jabir ibn Hayyan, but rather a twelfth- or thirteenth-century Latin 'pseudo-Geber'. The position is maintained, in part, due to the absence of any original extant Arabic works prior to the twelfth or thirteenth century which correspond directly to the Latin Geber corpus" (Medieval Science, Technology and Medicine: An Encyclopaedia, p. 280). Moreover, "Western tradition has attributed important discoveries in chemistry to Geber, namely of aqua regia, sulphuric acid, nitric acid and nitrate of silver; but none of these discoveries is mentioned in the Arabic works which bear his name; they do not appear till the Latin works of the end of the 13th century" (Encyclopaedia of Islam). In fact, the Summa is the only text to which a terminus ante quem this early can be assigned, with Peter of Abano, probably the real author of the Summa, quoting the text by name in his Conciliator, which he wrote sometime in the first decade of the 14th century (Newman). Newman explains further that "No manuscripts or reliable witnesses of the Geberian opuscula [I, IV and V of the present volume] dating before the early fifteenth century have yet been found", with Yale University's MS Mellon 5, written around 1400 in a German script, being the earliest document to contain any of his chemical corpus aside from the Summa. This last was first printed in the 1480s in Rome by Eucharius Silber, along with a text entitled Liber investigationis magisterii. A second Roman printing in 1524 (with a Testamentum and variant of the Liber investigationis) was followed by a third edition in 1541 (although Newman does not give a location, Ferguson locates a 1541 printing in Nuremberg) which contains the Summa, De inventione veritatis, the Liber de fornacibus construendis and a third form of the Liber investigationis. "All subsequent printings of Â… [these texts] derive from these three editions". Newman suggests that De investigatione perfectionis and De invention veritatis are in fact the work of two different authors, neither of whom composed the Summa: "Both texts were written to correspond to the Summa's reference to a Liber de investigatione by 'Geber'". Even if "Geber" is a figure of doubtful historicity, the continuing misattribution of texts to an 8th-century Arab can be interpreted as an eloquent illustration of indebtedness to Islamic learning in a late medieval Europe making its way towards the Renaissance, propelled by the translation of original Arabic texts and of Arabic recensions of various Greek texts otherwise lost.

Warmholtz 5055, not.

Considerations concerning free-schools, as settled in England.

Oxford, printed at the Theater ... and are to be had there. And in London at Mr. Simon Millers at the signe of the Star near the West end of S. Pauls Church. Anno 1678. 8vo., (8) + 112pp., with a large engraved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre on title-page, well bound in mid-20th century maroon morocco gilt, with the armorial bookplate of a ducal member of the Order of the Garter on front pastedown (presumably transferred from an earlier binding). A very good copy. First edition. Wing W.1015. Madan (Oxford Books>) 3198. Muirhead (English at School>) 25. Goldsmiths 2265. Although in some ways a disappointing essay, there is still material here that is of real historical interest. Christopher Wase (1627-1690), schoolmaster and classical scholar, had a colourful early life and was for a time tutor to William Herbert (b. 1640), eldest son of the Earl of Pembroke. He was subsequently headmaster of Dedham Royal Free School in Essex (1655-1662), and of Tonbridge School, Kent (1662-1668). In April 1669, largely through the patronage of the diarist John Evelyn, Wase was appointed to the post of historiographer in the office of Joseph Williamson, secretary of state. 'In response to criticisms that the growth of free schools had threatened social distinctions and (allegedly) contributed to the dissension that led to the civil wars, undertook a pioneer investigation of the nation's grammar schools. ... Wase's Considerations concerning free-schools, as settled in England> was finally published in Oxford in 1678. 'Miserable is the face of any nation', he declared, 'where neither schools nor universities be frequented: no law, no safe commerce, a general ignorance and a neglect of duty both to God and man' [p.34]. He therefore proposed to increase rather than to limit the number of free schools in England and Wales, and concluded that adequate instruction should be provided for petty scholars in every parish in the land. This, he maintained, would be both socially and economically advantageous to the nation.' [Richard E. Hodges in ODNB]. Arnold Muirhead (The English at School>) additionally notes that 'this has a most interesting section on the value of a school library ....' the greatest benefit to learners after the Master, is a good library, 'and there is a discussion on what books it should contain'. On the subject of books, Wase does indeed give sound advice: 'Best editions, as latest are ordinarily, may be desirable, yet former are not to be rejected. So much judgement in dealing with the bookseller as not to buy corrupt copies at the rate of the best, but at a price vile as they are, is frugality> in a scholar: when to be skil'd in the choice of editions and withal so nice as to nauseat what is not most elegant in print and binding is not discretion in a poor student, but luxury>'. In other words, students should pay booksellers low prices for poor-quality copies of books. Top quality books are expensive luxuries.

In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World (Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt) with 46 maps, the 1734 Large Atlas (Grosser Atlas) with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas Small Atlas (Atlas minor) with 64 maps. MatthŠus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

Intressant proveniens. Karlshamn grundades av Karl X Gustav men fick stadsrättigheter först 1664 och sitt namn först 1668. Niclas Petrus Lindahl bör ha hört till första generationens Karlshamnsbor

Cologne [actually Amsterdam], 1678. [bound with:] de la Roche-Guilhen, Anne: ALMANZAIDE NOUVELLE.... Paris: Claude Barbin [i.e. Holland], 1676. 96pp. 12mo. Contemporary plain paper boards, spine renewed to style. Light wear to extremities. Very good. Evidently the first edition of this scarce work, offering three fictional tales on the theme of buccaneering and piracy in the Americas: "Histoire de Don Diego da Rivera," "Histoire de Mont-Val," and "Le destin de l'homme, ou les aventures de Don Bartelimi de la Cueba, Portugais." Significantly, these fictional tales of piracy appear in the same year and place as the greatest classic on Caribbean pirates, Alexander Esquemeling's DE AMERICAENSCHE ZEE-ROOVERS, translated into English in 1684 as THE BUCANIERS OF AMERICA. The tales here are drawn from Esquemeling and illustrate the endless appeal of piracy tales. Bound in after is an early edition (1676) of the novel, ALMANZAIDE..., first printed in 1674. Set in Morocco, this was the first of approximately twenty popular romances produced by female novelist Anne de la Roche- Guilhen (1644-1710). Another edition was printed in 1678 at Rouen. Perhaps the earliest pirate fiction, drawn from the first edition of the greatest classic in the genre.

With same engraved frontispiece (with revisions), 30 engraved emblems in text and 4 engraved emblems on plates with letterpress text. 2 volumes bound as 1. 4to. Contemporary gold-tooled, tanned sheepskin. .

Landwehr, Emblem books Low Countries 759 & 760; Praz, p. 502. Second edition of volume 1 and first edition of volume 2 of a very attractive emblem book by Adriaan Spinniker (1678-1745). Together they contain 84 beautifully engraved emblems: 80 by Vincent van der Vinne (who also drew and engraved the frontispiece used for both volumes, with its title revised for the continuation) and 4 (for the Spiegel) by J.C. Philips. Isaac van der Vinne's father and nephew were both named Vincent, but the present artist-engraver was probably the nephew (1686-1742). The emblems show scenes from the Bible and are followed by brief excerpts from the relevant parts of the Bible and longer verses giving further information about it. Spinniker was a minister of the church for the Mennonite Congregation in Amsterdam. In fine condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The binding has a few scuff-marks and some cracks in the spine, but is otherwise very good..

Page 564 misnumbered by the printer as 464. Otherwise complete and clean. 3 copperplate engravings are included in the pagination. Bound in stippled brown leather, appearing to be a mid to late 1700's rebinding. Leather over spine rubbed with mild nicking at spine ends and a small open tear near the tail. Spine unlettered. Speckled paint/ink decorated endsheets; all edges gilt, but dimmed. Mild worm traces to the last two leaves and pastedown. Prior ownership to bottom edge of rear endpage.         An Account of the Digging Up of the Quarters of William Stayley...

1678. The Last Decapitated Head Displayed On London Bridge [Broadside]. Stayley, William. An Account of the Digging Up of the Quarters of William Stayley, Lately Executed for High Treason, For That His Relations Abused the Kings Mercy. Imprimatur Novemb 30. 1678. William Scroggs. London: Printed for Robert Pawlet at the Sign of the Bible in Chancery-Lance [sic], near Fleet-street. 1678. 11-1/2" x 16" broadside. Light toning, faint vertical and horizontal fold lines, 4-1/2" section excised from foot of left margin, old tear professionally repaired with no loss of printed surface. A well-preserved copy. * William Staley (or Stayley) was one of the victims of the Popish Plot, one of the cruelest hoaxes in British history and the inspiration for a wave of anti-Catholic violence. It was the invention of Titus Oates, an Anglican clergyman, and his friend, Dr. Israel Tonge, a cleric and passionate anti-Catholic. They pretended to have discovered a Jesuit plot to assassinate the King, massacre Protestants, and set James, Duke of York, the King's Catholic brother, on the throne. Convicted as a conspirator, Staley was executed and quartered in 1678. "Instead of his quarters being set upon the city gates the king allowed them to be delivered to his relatives. Mass was said over his remains and a 'grand' funeral was arranged from his father's house on 29 November, before his burial in St Paul's, Covent Garden. This incensed the government so much that the coroner ordered the body to be dug up and delivered to the sheriff to be set upon the city gates" [Oxford Dictionary of National Biography]. William Stayley's head has a small place in London's history; it was the last to be displayed on London Bridge. English Short-Title Catalogue R211806.

The Ornithology of Francis Willughby in three Books. Wherein All the Birds hitherto known, being reduced into a Method suitable to their Natures, are accurately described. The Descriptions illustrated by most elegant Figures, nearly resembling the live Birds . To which are added, three considerable Discourses, I. Of the Art of Fowling . II. Of the Ordering of Singing Birds. III. Of Falconry. By John Ray .

London, John Martyn for the Royal Society, 1678 - Folio (358 x 228 mm), pp [xii] 441 [6] 7, title in red and black, 2 letterpress tables between pp 54 and 55 and 172 and 173, and 80 engraved plates; several gatherings with wormholes on blank corners, no text affected, a very crisp, unpressed copy in contemporary English speckled calf, old repairs to joints on upper portion of spine. £5500First English edition of the first modern ornithology, and 'one of the most important treatises on ornithology of all time' (Wood). It was translated and adapted from the Latin text of 1676 by John Ray, who added three additional plates and the three discourses on fowling, song birds, and falconry at the end. This work, begun jointly by Willughby and Ray and completed by Ray after the former's death in 1672, revolutionised ornithological taxonomy by organising species according to their physical characteristics. 'An important feature of the book was to be the engraved figures of birds, the cost being contributed by Willughby's widow . The Ornithologia, dated on the titlepage 1676 and carrying the arms of the Royal Society, if regarded only as a piece of book production, is magnificent. With its historical importance added it becomes one of the fairest monuments that mark the progress of scientific natural history' (Keynes p 54). As Keynes notes, the Latin edition was largely the work of Ray, as Willughby had died in 1672 and had left only rough field notes towards his ornithology. Ray effectively wrote the entire work, utilising not only Willughby's material but that of himself and other naturalists, and he provided the taxonomic system. The plates, numbered I-LXXVII, are signed by F. H. van Hove (XII, XXII, XLV), W. Faithorne (XXXVIII, XLIII) and W. Sherwin (XLVIII); the others are unsigned.Provenance: purchase note on front pastedown: '1714. Pr. 0: 12:6 Auct.
