Although the work appears to a large extent to be defending and using the views of Plato and Aristotle (treated in a manner typical of Renaissance humanism rather than of later scholarship) to attack the views of Democritu … [Click Below for Full Description]

SPINOZA, Benedictus de; Gabriel de Saint-Glain, trans. attrib
Claude Emanuel / Jacob Smith, 1678. In 1655 Spinoza began work on this treatise, with which he hoped to accomplish two ends: to bring attention to the "prejudices of the theologians" while refuting accusations of atheism made against him (see Fritz Bamberger, "The Early Editions of Spinoza's 'Tractatus Theologico-Politicus,'" in "Studies in Bibliography and Booklore," Vol. 5, p. 9). The work did not appear until fifteen years later, in 1670, anonymously, under a false imprint, and in modern Latin in order to bypass censorship. This translation, the earliest in French, first appeared in 1678 under the title "Clef du Sanctuaire. " That title was swiftly changed, together with its false imprint, due to political lashback (indeed, by the early 1680s, mention was made by the censors of Geneva of this and other "mechans livres" (cf. Maria-Cristina Pitassi, "De la Censure à la Réfutation: L'Académie de Genève," in "Revue de Métaphysique et de Morale," Vol. 93, no. 2, Avril-Juin, 1988, p. 150)). The present copy conforms to the description of an entirely new printing of the work, seen here with two title pages (as noted in Brunet), and featuring slightly taller type and the misspelled "PREEACE" on leaf [*9] verso (Bamberger, p.32). Though the translation issued under the title "Clef du Sanctuaire" is the rarest the three, Brunet's dismissal of this edition as having "little value" may perhaps be considered an overstatement - it is among the earliest editions in French and carries with it a fascinating bibliographical history. See BRUNET V, p. 492; PMM 153 (citing the 1670 edition). … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: printed by E. Flesher for Richard Tonson, 1678. Quarto (200 x 136 mm). Nineteenth-century half vellum, marbled paper sides, titles in gilt to black morocco spine label, top and bottom edges marbled. Bookseller's ticket of T. Connolly, Dublin to front pastedown. Slight shaving to headlines, running titles, pagination and catchwords without any loss of comprehension. Boards very slightly bowed, minor rubbing to extremities, very faint water-staining to a couple of gatherings, book block edges foxed; a very good copy indeed. First edition of this important piece of early feminist writing. Sir Patient Fancy, often considered the most cynical of Behn's plays, was first staged in 1678. The work, which is a sex comedy in the style of her notable work The Rover (anonymously published in 1677), "presents and satirises virtually every type of marriage conceivable at the end of the seventeenth-century", allowing "adultery to go unpunished and hypocrisy to be rewarded" ( Kreis-Schinck, p. 57; ODNB). The play "mocked old dissenting merchants and country bumpkins; and its assertive epilogue defended a woman's right to compose plays" (ibid,) The concluding epilogue of this work, noted as being spoken by Nell Gwynne, clearly states Behn's position, "pray tell me then, Why women should not write as well as men". When published, Sir Patient Fancy included a defence of Behn against both plagiarism and bawdiness, noting that she was "writing 'for Bread and not ashamed to owne it'" (ibid.). Behn is undoubtedly one of the most significant Restoration writers. Her short story Oroonoko has … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

VAN VEEN (Otto).
F. Foppens, 1678. [Click Below for Full Description]
