SPERONI, Sperone
D. Farri, 1566. 8vo. Two works in one, ff. 48 + 54 [ii] last two blank. Italic letter. Historiated initials, printer's woodcut device on both titles, "Franco di flamminis" ms. A good copy in C18 marbles paper wraps. Excellent edition, with Giraldi's important 'guide,' of Speroni's most famous, influential and controversial play, first published in 1546. A versatile and extremely influential man of letters, Speroni was known for his literary criticism, in the many prose dialogues and treatises he wrote over his long career, and for this Senecan revenge tragedy, Canace, which instigated a feud among the Italian literati on the tragic genre that lasted for decades. Sperone was born in Padua and taught in various capacities at the city's university, where he was acquainted with Pietro Bembo, Giraldi, and Tasso, and was at the center of the powerful literary circle at Padua. This is a verse tragedy, undivided into scenes, based on the Greek legend of Canace, daughter of Aeolus, who was forced by her father to commit suicide for having fallen in love with her brother, Macar. It was composed for Padua's literary academy, the Accademia degli Inflammati, and was printed at Firenze in 1546. The work was highly polemical, the subject of incestuous twins was always going to be controversial, and was performed only once. "It was Speroni's Canace that most exploited the incest theme. In fact, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Venice ("Venevia"), Francesco Rampazetto, 1566. 4to. (7) ff., 1 blank f., 88, (4) ff. With woodcut printer's device to title page. 19th century vellum with giltstamped red spine labels. First dated publication of Ulloa's account of the siege of Tripolis in Italian. Includes the three-page dedication to Johann Jakob Fugger - the only place in the book where Ulloa's name appears. The author, a courtier of King Philip II, celebrates the defence of St Angelo's fortress on Malta, modern Libya. - In the 1551 Siege of Tripoli, the Ottoman fleet vanquished the Knights of Malta in Tripoli; the city was captured on 15 August by Sinan Pasha after six days of bombardment. The knights, many of them French, were returned to Malta upon the intervention of the French ambassador, and shipped onboard his galleys, while the mercenaries were enslaved. Murad Agha, the Ottoman commander of Tajura since 1536, was named as the Pashalik of the city. The siege was the first step in the all-out Italian War of 1551-59 in the European theatre. In 1553, Dragut was nominated commander of Tripoli by Suleiman, making the city a centre for piratical raids in the Mediterranean and the capital of the Ottoman province of Tripolitania. In a famous attack from Tripoli, in 1558, Dragut attacked Reggio and took all its inhabitants as slaves to Tripoli. In 1560, a powerful naval force was sent to recapture Tripoli, but that force was defeated in the Battle of Djerba, an event also described in Ulloa's book. MELLINI, Domenico.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Catholic Church. Catechisms & creeds.
In aedibus populi Romani, apud Paulum Manutium, 1566. First edition of this important monument of the Catholic Reformation, the first official Catholic catechism, as authorized by the council of Trent and issued by Pope Pius V. It is not a true catechism in the modern sense of the genre; it does not address the lay person. Rather, the work is a => catechistic and homiletic handbook for the parish priest. Meant to improve the theological understanding of priests during the contentious era following Luther's schism, it divides doctrine into four categories: symbols, sacraments, commandments, and prayer. In 1551 Paolo Manuzio moved a press to Rome under the auspices of the papacy. At Rome, that Aldine press was essentially an extension of the papacy, which capitalized on its fame to disseminate -- with great cachet -- Vatican-approved texts in the publication war that was such an integral part of the Protestant and Catholic Reformations. The work is printed in roman with side- and shouldernotes in italic. The title-page has a large woodcut architectural and armorial device that incorporates a small Aldine anchor and Paolo Manutius's initials. Provenance: 19th-century bookplate of the Islington Protestant Institute; most recently in the library of American collector Albert A. Howard, small booklabel ("AHA") at rear.

Jonghe, Adrian de ; Hadrianus, Junius
Plantin, Antwerp 1566 - 134p with 58 excellent woodcut illustrations (6 x 6 cm), in a 19th century binding with marbled boards. Printed on very good paper, the impressions of the woodcuts are nice and sharp. There are signs of old repairs of wormholing on the margins of quite a few pages, and the last two leaves (text only) have been extensively and expertly repaired, leading to loss of a few words on the last page which contains the Aenigmata, making them even more enigmatic. Many of the emblems are dedicated to specific names, motivs include elephant, snakes, pine-cone, fish, mice, crocodile, etc. A nice example of emblem literature by a well-known writer and doctor [Attributes: Hard Cover]

In his introduction Sansovino divides the various orders into three categories; Knights of the Cross, the Collar and the Sword. He then discuses in detail the various orders of knights of Europe past, such as the Templars, and present such as the Knights of Malta, giving examples of specific knights and listing the names of knights of the highest orders, followed by thirty one short biographies of famous Italian knights. He finishes with interesting descriptions of the Islands of Malta and Elba. Born in Rome in 1521, Francisco Sansovino was brought to Venice following the sack of his native city in 1527. Nürnberg, Ulrich Neuber and Dietrich Gerlach, 1566. 4to. [151] lvs. Modern marbled paper-covered boards. VD 16 H 5448; Franz 21.6. Rare sixth and last German edition of Huberinus' forty catechism sermons. Huberinus was the first Protestant preacher in the county of Hohenlohe (Northern Württemberg) and one of the most important sixteenth century writers of Protestant devotional literature. He matriculated at the University of Wittenberg in 1522, resided in Augsburg from 1525 until 1544, and finally became preacher in Öhringen. Especially in Öhringen he had a decisive influence on the course of the Reformation. Huberinus also brought vigor to the campaign to reform family and marriage. He was a strong advocate of the patriarchal family and emphasized that the success of the Reformation depended upon the patriarch taking over the task of doctrinal instruction in his family. His forty catechism sermons, held in Öhringen and first published in 1550, have also been translated into Latin. - Two marginal repairs (one of them affecting a few letters) and last blank leaf missing.
