Provenienz - Gobler (auch Goebler oder Gobel), Justinus (Hg.):
Frankfurt/M., Egenoff, 1566. Titel, fol. 53, 1 Bl. Goedecke I, 277 und II, 324.17); Leibniz (Script. rer. bunsv. DE

COPERNICUS, Nicolaus
Heinrich Petri, Basel, 1566. Second edition of the most important scientific publication of the sixteenth century and a "landmark in human thought" (PMM). De revolutionibus was the first work to propose a comprehensive heliocentric theory of the cosmos, according to which the sun stood still and the earth revolved around it. It thereby inaugurated one of the greatest ever paradigm shifts in the history of human thought. "Renaissance mathematicians, following Ptolemy, believed that the moon, sun and five planets were carried by complex systems of epicycles and deferents about the central earth, the fixed pivot of the whole system. In Copernicus's day it was well known that conventional astronomy did not work accurately . Copernicus, stimulated by the free entertainment of various new ideas among the ancients, determined to abandon the fixity of the earth . With the sun placed at the center, and the earth daily spinning on its axis and circling the sun in common with other planets, the whole system of the heavens became clear, simple and harmonious. The revolutionary nature of his theory is evident in his famous diagram illustrating the concentric orbits of the planets [C1v]" (PMM). The text of the second edition of De revolutionibus follows the 1543 first edition almost exactly, including Andreas Osiander's notorious unsigned preface, in which he attempted to placate potential critics of the work by stating that "these hypotheses need not be true nor even probable" - all that was necessary was that they should allow astronomers to correctly calculate the motions of the heave … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

CATANEO, Giovanni Battista (CATTANEO, Giambattista)
Brescia: Tomaso Bozzola, 1566. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Folio (293 x 208 mm). [4], 42 leaves. Signatures: *4 A-G6. Printer's woodcut device on title, historiated initials, large woodcut illustrating the arms of the dedicatee Camilla Torella, letterpress tables. Later half vellum over xylographed paper boards, old ink lettering and shelf label to spine (little soiling of boards). Little age toning and dust soiling of text, filled larger wormtrack to final gatherings just affecting upper outer corner of tables, final leaf with old paper repair obscuring text of colophon on verso and some loss to table on recto, restored edge chipping of first 3 leaves, occasional spotting and light waterstaining. Provenance: small stamp "ex biblioteca Franncardini Rom.(?)" on title; Giancarlo Beltrame Library. ---- Riccardi I, 511; not in BM-STC Italian. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of Cataneo's curious mathematical-astrological treatise (a similar tract was published in 1562 under the title Rote perpetue). In this work, a board game based on calendar computations is described which consists of numerical charts related to the 12 months of the year. The game involves the casual extraction of two numbers by the use of three dices, to calculate Moon phases, specific dates such as Easter, the beginning of the Advent or the Golden number. - Visit our website for additional images and information. ARGENTERIO, Joannis
Torrentiniana, Mondovi, 1566. Small woodcut portrait of the author, woodcut historiated initials. Contemporary vellum; the top nearly 90 mm. of the spine is missing, which allows one to view both the material used to back the spine as well as the sewing, and nearly that much of the top of the front cover is also missing, title page torn at bottom corner without loss of any printing, edges of first few leaves chipped, otherwise a very interesting and lovely copy. First edition of Argenterio's commentary on Galen's Art of medicine, a fundamental text taught at all major medical schools of the time, and one of the earliest stands against the teachings of Galen in a premier medical curriculum. The text is divided into three parts: the body, symptoms, and potential causes and cures. A common theme throughout Argenterio's writings is his critique of Galen's lack of specificity concerning pathology, namely his reticence in distinguishing symptom and disease. "The complimentary preface to Cosimo began with an attack on excessive dependence on Galen which broadens into a general condemnation of the main components common to both scholastic and humanist forms of academic education in the arts, philosophy, and medicine: reliance on ancient authority, teaching by commentary, and disputations or other forms of debate about texts. The grounds on which Argenterio objected to these practices were that the most esteemed ancient authors, notably Galen and Aristotle, were in many instances either factually wrong or internally inconsistent; that exclusive focus on the subject matter they had c … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]

GOLTZIUS (Hubert).
Brugis Flandrorum, 1566. Petit in-folio. 12ff. 288pp. 22ff. Plein vélin ivoire du temps. Edition Originale. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, "The First Private Press in the Low Countries," in Quærendo 2 (1972), pp. 294-310. Brunet, Recherches sur les Imprimeries Imaginaires, Clandestines et Particulières, p.19. MELLINI, Domenico.

» (Rouses, Preachers). 1566. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Paolo Giovio was a 16th-century Italian historian who was certainly familiar with Plutarch's 'Lives.' So much so that he created his own work which rivaled the ancient masterpiece. Giovio's 'Historiarum sui Temporis' is a collection of biographical sketches of lives of famous men which accounts for recognizable Italian men as well as those involved in the Italian Wars. Plautus
Christopher Plantini. Good Condition: Chipped and lost leather at spine: chipped and faded boards; tear inside on spare page: writing of previous owners' names. Lovely little survivor! Small book of the Plays of Plautus, some of the earliest surviving works in the Western canon. Annotated by the printer, the volume has a lovely title page in the Renaissance style with matching figures supported by blocks depicting knights with swords raised and topped by cherubs aiming their arrows at each other. A note on the back of the title page, written in ink by a previous owner, says, "Amongst the Romans poor freemen used to hire themselves out to the service of the Mill to grind corn when all other sources of employment failed. Plautus is said to have done so being reduced to the extreme of poverty and to have composed his comedies while thus employed". The book is set with a lovely type, and is in very good condition for its age. The leather is a little dry and has chipped on the spine at both the top and the bottom but evidence of Fleurs-de-lys decorations on front and back cover along with a stamped design in the middle of the back board is still there. There is evidence of a matching stamped design on the front. Good Condition: 12mo, leather with stamped gilt fleur-de-lays in four corners connected by lines, ridged spine with white streak, paper discoloration due to age. Some minor foxing. Writing on spare and back of spare with names of previous owners. Writing on back of title page. " M. Venerable Bede
Louvain: Complete and in very good condition; very little foxing, newly rebound in fine binding by Starrbookworks. 1566 Bede Ecclesiastical History of England ~ Venerable Bedae~ Libris I - V Printed by Stephani Valeri, Luvain, 1566 Size: 3 x 5 x 1-1/4 Condition Report: complete and in very good condition; very little foxing, newly rebound in fine binding by Starrbookworks History of Bede's Ecclesiastical History of England Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People was completed in 731. The work tells the story of the conversion of the English people to Christianity. Bede's account is the chief source of information about English history from the arrival of St Augustine in Kent in 597 until 731. But Bede begins his history much earlier, with Julius Caesar's invasion of England in 55 BCE. Bede used several other sources in compiling his own account, each of which he acknowledged. After briefly summarising Christianity in Roman Britain, Bede describes St Augustine's mission, which brought Christianity to the Anglo-Saxons. The work describes the subsequent attempts to convert the different kingdoms of Britain, including Mercia, Sussex and Northumbria. Bede (b. c. 672, d. 735) was born in Northumbria, and at the age of seven entered the monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow near Newcastle, where he spent all of his adult life. In the Middle Ages he was famous for the works he wrote on the interpretation of Scripture, on the natural world and on how to calculate the date of Easter.

Mario CARTARO o CARTARI (1560-1620)
Bulino, 1566, datato e monogrammato in lastra in basso a sinistra '1566 / MVK.' "Engraving, 1566, dated and lettered at lower left '1566 / MVK.' A great impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark "shield with a tower and three mountains"", with thin margins, in perfecy condition. The conversion of St Paul who is on his fallen horse in the centre, Jesus appears in a cloud above and soldiers flee the apparition. According to the Acts of the Apostles, on the way to Damascus Saul the Pharisee (soon to be Paul the Apostle) fell to the ground when he heard the voice of Christ saying to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' (lat. "Saul, Saul cur me persequeris?") and temporarily lost his sight. A superb example of this very rare …

Firenza: Appresso i Giunti, 1566. First Edition. A scarce work describing the elaborate festival in Florence during Carnevale. Christie's aptly described this work in the Feltrinelli sale of 1998 stating: "The Carnival at Florence in 1565 was particularly noteworthy for having ten masked groups, each led in the parade by a bufala, a female buffalo, also in costume. The author describes the participants and their fancy dress: Zanobi Carnesecchi was dressed as Wickedness hunted by his party of Flagellators, Capponi was Osiris accompanied by his Egyptian retinue, and the guild of Genovese merchants staged a baccanale. The Marquise of Castiglione, Don Luigi da Toledo, Cardinal Medici and Prince Francesco himself were also among the participants. The Carnival parade ended with a magnificent show of famous mythic and classical heroes: Caesar and Pompeo, Alexander and Cirus, Hector and Achilles, in honour of Grand Duke Cosimo and his heir Francesco. Afterwards a race with the bufalas was held, and the fireworks, music and dancing did not end before 3.00 the next morning." Small 8vo (14.6 x 8.8cm), 56 pp. [i.e. 48]. Medici coat of arms on title-page. Some foxing and toning throughout. Bound in 19th century vellum over boards with, new endpapers inserted and original endpapers preserved.
