The Plays of William Shakespeare, in eight volumes, with the corrections and illustrations of various commentators; to which are added notes by Sam. Johnson.
London J & R Tonson, C Corbet, H Woodfall, J Rivington, R Baldwin, L. Hawes, Clark and Collins, W Johnston, T Caslon, T Lownds and the Executors of B Dodd, London. 1765 - First Johnson edition, possibly the second issue of 1765, complete in eight volumes with the portrait frontispiece to vol I and half-titles to vols III – VIII. Bound in eighteenth century calf boards, re-spined, probably at some point in the mid-twentieth century, with marbled edges to the text blocks and marbled endpapers. The boards are somewhat bumped, browned and rubbed with some signs of water damage. The text blocks are slightly toned, foxed and stained, all have at least one bookplate, some more than one, including that of the most recent owner, the author of 'Watership Down', Richard Adams. Some volumes have suffered worse water or damp damage than others, vol VIII has signs to the bottom half of most pages, some more so than others, and there is damage to the bottom of the front pastedown and endpaper, Vol VII is similar, Vol VI is slightly better but still with signs of damage throughout, Vol V has fared much better and Vols I – IV are reasonably free from water damage. There are pencil notes to the texts of some volumes. The bindings are reasonably firm with no loose pages. An important edition of Shakespeare's plays and quite uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition]
