London: John Stockdale, 1797. First edition. Hardcover. Very good. xv,(1),475pp. followed by 4pp. of publishers catalogue and directions to the binder for placing plates. Complete with a frontispiece, engraved title (followed by the typeset title), 33 images on 25 plates and 2 maps. Nicely bound in half red morocco, spine in six compartments, gilt, red cloth sides. Titles repaired at inner margins, some soil and aging, but overall a very good copy in a fine binding. This is the first edition of Staunton's abridgment of the 2 volume 4to edition of the same year.
