Ludovici König, Basel 1629 - Square octavo. 6.5x8" [20 leaves], 532pp. [+26 leaves of index]. Period Brown leather boards with blind-stamped ruling. Side edges of the covers with gilt ruling. Raised bands. Edges of the book block in red. The work is the second Latin translation of Maimonedes' "The Guide for the Perplexed" ever published. The first Latin translation was by Agostino Giustiniani and published in Paris in 1520 under the title "Rabbi Mossei Aegyptij Dux seu Director dubitantium aut perplexorum". Buxtorf, himself a renowned Christian Hebraist, completed his own new Latin translation, taken directly from the Hebrew translation of the text's original Judeo-Arabic by Samuel ibn Tibbon, in 1204. The book contains a two page handwritten inscription in English giving a brief summary of the history of the influence and reception of the work from the time shortly after its was written. The inscription is written in ink on the front free endapers. Title page with decorative ruling surrounding the text. The text of the book is flanked by bibliographic biblical references in the side margins. Woodblock historiated initial and endpiece at the beginning and end of the main text portion of the book. 52 pages of an extensive index at the back of the book. Text in Latin with occasional Hebrew words throughout.Binding with rubbing and chipping to extremities. Cracked and chipped hinges along the spine. A 3" piece of the leather of the bottom left corner of the front cover and the tail of the spine has been chipped away leaving only the board underneath. The original label on the spine is missing, leaving the original imprint of stamped lettering and some adhesive residue behind. Back cover with a circular abrasion. Interior with some closed tear and/or creasing to the edges of a few pages. Pages with age toning along the edges throughout. Starting at interior covers. Final page, rear free endpaper and interior back cover with some dead mold. Water stains throughout text. Book block tight overall. Binding in and interior in good- condition overall. *Johannes Buxtorf, the Younger (1599 - 1664) was son of the scholar Johannes Buxtorf, and a prominent Christian Hebraist, scholar and professor at Basel University.
