Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Rebound, half gilt-stamped morocco and brown cloth over boards; 5 raised bands; edges dyed; Part I: Fifth Edition, 1728; Part II: First Edition, 1729. Volume I: pp. [16], 477; Volume II: pp. (xxxi), 432, [24], Index. The Fable of the Bees includes the poem The Grumbling Hive: Or, Knaves Turned Honest, followed by a discussion of the poem. The discussion touches on key principles of economic thought such as the "invisible hand" and division of labor. A scandalous book when it was first published, Mandeville's work was later cited by noted economist, John Maynard Keynes. Covers rubbed, some wear along edges, corners bumped, previous owner's blind stamp on both title pages, "Bernard de Mandeville 1670-1733" inked on Vol. I title page, front fly leaf with pencil notes, scattered staining and foxing, especially in part II.
