Venice: Rubeus Vercellencis, 1506. Folio (32,0 x 21,8 cm). (1), 358 lvs. Contemporary calf with extensive blind-tooling over wooden boards with remains of 4 clasps. Spine with 3 raised bands. Original text (9 to 18 lines per page) set in a larger type and surrounded by the commentaries (58 to 60 lines per page) set in a smaller type. Illustrated with 80 fine woodcuts. Original text and commentaries with many decorated woodcut initials. De Vita Caesarum, a set of biographies of 12 successive Roman caesars, is the most important surviving work of the Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus. The 80 woodcut engravings often depict war scenes, but also domestic and pastoral scenes, punishments, slave transports, cruelties like the killing of refugees and a senator by Tiberius, the murder of his family by Nero, the murder of Vitellius and the slaying of Julus Caesar. Size of the woodcuts 5,8 x 7,5 cm or 4,8 x 7,5 cm, except the famous first one, depicting the classical caesarian section (measuring 8,0 x 11,6 cm). Some of the engravings repeated. Also with 7 Maiblumen initials and 3 large decorated initials in black. Original text and commentaries with many decorated woodcut initials. Some of these woodcuts decorated with angels in Holbein-style. A few leaves browned, several leaves with a marginal stain, leaf a2 damaged, only the third of the four leaves of the first quire present (the other three, including th title page present as copies), leaf aa3 with some library stamps, endpaper with ex-libris stamp, covers rubbed and a bit damaged, leather of spine damaged and partly restored. Otherwise a nice and well-kept copy of an early post-incunable in contemporary binding. For a full description and more images please visit: .
