[Nuns] [Spanish manuscript on vellum]. Convento de las Benitas recoletas de San Pedro
The creation and publication of ceremonial rituals for women is a part of the Catholic reform and more specifically of the Council of Trent. It is from the decisions of this Council that the monasteries escape the control of wealthy families and become educational institutions. It is the rise of a feminine Christianity, a new apostolate dedicated to educational tasks, charity and care of the poor, injured, and orphans. All over Europe, in the late XVI and early XVII century depending the region, a large number of women's congregations were created. In the context of such dynamism, the development of a ceremonial or ritual therefore responds to an urgent need, giving the religious and nuns the tools to accomplish worthily the rituals corresponding to their status; in other words, the supply of a guide defining the terms and the texts of the main events that shape their lives: the taking of the veil, occupation, taking care of the ill, funerals, etc. "San Pedro de Beaterio" -Beaterios were feminine communities, with no submission to rules or ecclesiastical hierarchy- was founded in the late XV century (in 1484 or 1487) by Don Diego Fernandez de Ubeda; by 1629, this particular Beaterio became a Benedictine community of nuns, and later in 1652 the "Benitas Recoletas San Pedro" (commonly called "Beatas San Pedro"). The Beaterios occupied an important place in Spain´s 16th and 17th century, being places for women to live retired from masculine inherence or ruling, in an autonomous way. The additions (found on pp. 20 - 21, 40 and 44, this later lacking) date from the change of the name in 1652 and where before the monastery was not specifically named, but only generally as "huius Monasterii". It consists of: [1] r °: Lo que ha de decir el Preste quando da la profession es lo siguiente 1-18: Modo de dar el habito á las noviçias conforme los vios de la sagrada Religion de nro Glorioso Padre S. Benito 19-48: Modo de dar la Profession [49] 50r °: Lo que se haçe con la Monja ó Freyla al tercero dia de la profession es lo siguiente [51] to [65]: abbreviated copy of ceremonial of the taking of the veil, and tasks; this part in a different hand, added later.
