Poetry at the Edge: Five Contemporary California Poets

Book Club of California, San Francisco 2014 - A beautifully printed collection of works by five major California poets: Joseph Stroud, Kay Ryan, Gary Young, Martha Ronk, and Michael Hannon. Signed by all five poets. 300 numbered copies were printed and bound. A certain number of copies were issued in unbound sheets, which were lettered, not numbered. This copy, letter 'C,' is in a gorgeous, unique, Tudor-style binding by Coleen Curry.Poetry at the Edge: Five Contemporary California Poets is the Book Club of California's 233rd publication, printed in the Centennial year of their printing program. It was designed and edited by Carolee Campbell, the proprietor of Ninja Press, founded in 1984. Her highly-coveted fine press books include The Book of Silences by Robert Bringhurst, 2000; The Persephones by Nathaniel Tarn, 2009; and Lives of the Artists by W.S. Merwin, 2013. Each copy of Poetry at the Edge contains two photographs by Campbell, also an accomplished photographer. The book was letterpress printed by Norman Clayton at Classic Letterpress in Ojai, California. The typeface is Walbaum. The text was printed onto Zerkall Frankfurt paper with Zerkall Nideggen for the endpapers. The photographs were digitally printed at Classic Letterpress using Epson UltraChrome K3 inks. 140 of the numbered copies, designated for the Book Club of California's Standing Order members, include a laid in signed broadside of a poem by former United States Poet Laureate and MacArthur Fellow Kay Ryan. The broadside was also designed by Carolee Campbell and letterpress printed by Norman Clayton. Carolee Campbell writes in her introduction to the book: This volume gathers together the voices of five poetic masters, each distinct one from the other, yet all identical in their unerring ability to read the warms and the cools of the human heart. While they make their home in California, they are poets of the world. Each has charted a disparate course, mapping the terrain through which they travel their separate landscapes with a streamlined diction. Coleen Curry's design for Poetry at the Edge was largely inspired by three features of the book: the flow and colors in the second photograph by Carolee Campbell, the many references throughout the book to shimmering light and water, and, especially, a single verse in Joseph Stroud's poem "Death in the Tehachapis:"Imagine a sea of ultramarine suspending a million jellyfish as soft as moons. Imagine the interlocking uninsistent tunes of drifting things.Curry, like these poets, lives at the edge. A resident of Muir Beach, CA, her studio overlooks the Pacific Ocean, with ever-changing views of the rocky, sandy shore, the sea, and wildlife. An avid swimmer, trail runner, and rock climber, Curry draws from a vast collection of sight, sound, and texture experiences for artistic inspiration. Curry says: I am fascinated with contrast of texture, form and movement, incorporating asymmetry and Earth elements. By utilizing a combination of traditional materials, found objects, and modified decorative techniques, my aim is to craft bindings that provide a visual, sensual, and tactile experience. She succeeds spectacularly.Coleen Curry is an award winning binder, exhibits internationally, and her work is held in many private collections and in institutions such as The Boston Athenaeum.Curry bound her first book in 2003 at the American Academy of Bookbinding in Colorado and graduated in 2009 with a diploma in Fine Binding. Continually seeking to hone her craft, Curry has studied with a still growing international roster of fine binders, including Monique Lallier, Dominic Riley, Luigi Castiglioni, Hélène Jolis, Sün Evrard, and Sol Rèbora. Curry now teaches at AAB and is also an assistant to Don Glaister.Traditional laced-in full leather Tudor-style binding in goatskin and water buffalo in hues of grey. Silver goatskin onlays intertwined with sanded, polished, carbon tooled grey goatskin.          Printess & The P. With The Real Princess by Hans Andersen.

2014 - 21/15 COPIES (from an edition of 25 copies), 20 relief prints and 7 double-page colour intaglio prints, on Zerkall and Fabriano papers respectively with the latter tissue-guarded, pp. [54], 4to, original hand-printed buff linen, printed label inset to upper board and backstrip, matching slipcase, original prospectus and order form laid in, fine. A book that garnered the Judges' Choice award at the Oxford Fine Press Fair in 2013 - it is a richly illustrated and conceptually rewarding reimagining of the classic tale, using a parallel pictorial narrative that describes insomnia and the discovery of printing. As well as an early version of the fairy tale, it uses Emily Dickinson's poem '"Hope" is the thing with feathers'.

A Brief History Of Seven Killings

New York City, NY: Riverhead Books(2014). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 688 pages. The author's breakthrough third novel. One of the most sensational literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the British Edition, which was published six months later. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only that sold out shortly after publication. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Marlon James' "A Brief History of Seven Killings". The single greatest "breakthrough" writer from the Caribbean since V. S. Naipaul. As is now well-known, the title is doubly ironic: It spans three decades, and at 688 pages, is not brief at all. At the same time, Bob Marley's life was very brief indeed: While he survived the ferocious attempt on his life, he soon died of cancer at the age of 36. With its cacophony of multiple, anguished voices, the novel is dense yet rewarding, a triumph of linguistic and literary virtuosity. "A great book. Its achievement goes far beyond opening up the terrible moment in the life of a great musician. He gives us the streets, the people, and especially the desperate, the Jamaicans whom Marley exhorted to: 'Open your eyes and look within: / Are you satisfied with the life you're living? ' " (The Boston Globe). Marley is not a character in the novel, whose single most brilliant stroke is that the story is told by (and is about) Marley's would-be killers. And then some. Marley is instead The Singer, an inescapable presence, whose actual life is telegraphed by Marlon James: Bullet points, as it were, about the single greatest Jamaican figure, a universal icon, who can only be gleaned from a distance, in a feat of novelistic poise. "An amazing novel of power, corruption, and lies. I can't think of a better one I've read this century" (Irvine Welsh). An absolute "must-have" title for Marlon James collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed, dated, and inscribed ("lined") in blue ink-pen on the title page by the author: "Marlon James 10.31.15 'Listen. Dead people never stop talking' ". The latter is the novel's stunning first two lines. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Chicago Humanities Festival 2015 Souvenir Program during which event his signature was obtained. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed, dated, and inscribed ("lined") copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Almost all other copies available online are subsequent printings. The true first is the American. The British Edition was published six months later, and as such, does not have the same collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Booker Prize for "A Brief History of Seven Killings" in 2015. One of the most brilliant novelists of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPIES OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 159448600X.

Orinda, California: Donna Day Westerman, 2014. Limited Edition. Stiff boards. Fine. Westerman, Donna Day. No. 4 of 20, large quarto size, three-panel woodcut on six folded leaves, signed by Donna Day Westerman. Limited edition, number 4 of 20. Donna Day Westerman is a printmaker and painter in the Bay Area of California. [She is] "interested in traditional and historical media - particularly, woodcuts, wood-engravings and egg tempera - used in a contemporary manner. Working from close observation, and occasionally referring to [her] own photographs, [she] conceptually reduce[s] realistic nature to calligraphic or glyph-like notations. A kind of erasure takes place as the visual abundance... is distilled into the essence of the place. Other senses, such as sound and touch often inform the visual... A challenge... has been to capture the powerful ephemeral forms of fog and water in the hard-edged medium of wood... the medium itself determines much of the outcome." (N.B., from the artist's web site). This work, with the simple title of "L", which stands for low-pressure system, or "low", enables one to see the beauty and majesty of simple weather formations which can morph into majestic displays. ***DESCRIPTION: Original stiff handmade red paper wrappers, backstrip opens so the accordion style square format can be displayed in a connected elongated format, three-panel woodcut printed in gray; 12" x 9', illustrated title-page printed in red and gray, Perpetua type, Somerset paper, 12 1/8" x 12 1/8" when closed, six folded leaves including title-page and colophon, limited edition, number 4 of 20, signed by Donna Day Westerman. "Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of decline and destruction captures the signals, and makes plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning either to welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world that they see as hopelessly corrupt, or to fight the invasion. A science-fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision" (Publisher's blurb). "A unique blend of scientific and philosophical speculation, conspiracy theory, and cosmology" (George R. R. Martin). More than any other genre, science fiction/fantasy is pure allegory: It is about our struggle to survive and the search for meaning and transcendence in this life ("place") and in the universe ("time"). Every great fantasy novel such as Cixin Liu's aspires to be the most visionary and compelling version of the uber-narrative about our unending struggle and quest. "The Three-Body Problem" is also very boldly and beautifully signed and dated in black pen by the translator: "Ken Liu Sep 3, 2016". Laid-in are pristine copies of the Souvenir Materials of the event during which the signatures were obtained. These titles are great books.          All The Light We Cannot See: The Powell's "indiespensable" Limited Edition

New York City, NY: Scribner(2014). First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 535 pages. The author's second breakthrough novel. One of the most important literary events of our time. The First Hardcover Edition, issued as a Powell's "Indiespensable" selection. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the regular trade edition and copies that are signed on a tipped-in page. Published in a small and limited print run as an "Indispensable" title whose limitation is not stated. The "Indiespensable" Limited Edition is now rare. The production is elegant: It comes in a blue cloth slipcase and with a bonus "Author Interview" Booklet that is available through this Special Edition only. Presents, in its most beautiful collectible format, Anthony Doerr's "All The Light We Cannot See". Masterpiece. "About a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, he illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Ten years in the writing, a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer whose sentences never fail to thrill" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Anthony Doerr collectors. This copy of the Powell's "Indiespensable" Limited Slipcased Edition is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Anthony Doerr. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page, as most copies available online are. This title is a contemporary classic. This is one of very few copies of the "Indiespensable" Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for "All The Light We Cannot See". One of the most brilliant American novelists of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 1476746583.

Jimmy Page only stamped a couple hundred copies at each of a handful of book launch events he participated in; only one of which was held in the UK. I attended the associated special ‘A Life in Music: Jimmy Page’, book launch event organised by The Guardian (newspaper) Live Events in conjunction with Waterstones Booksellers. The event took place at Cadogan Hall, 5 Sloane Terrace, London, SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom on 15 October 2014 at 19:00. During the event Jimmy Page was in conversation with and was interviewed by Michael Hann, then The Guardian’s Music Editor, on the Cadogan Hall stage. Jimmy Page discussed his photographic autobiography and legendary life in music. Images from Jimmy’s 500-page book were displayed on a screen to accompany the talk. Fine book in Fine cover (NO DUSTJACKET was issues with this edition). Please see the photographs attached to my listing to verify the condition of this book. Jimmy Page by Jimmy Page Synopsis: SYNOPSIS: Jimmy Page is one of music's greatest guitarists, innovators and legends. JIMMY PAGE by Jimmy Page is his official autobiography, a photographic essay he personally created to tell his story for the first time. Jimmy's words and a handpicked selection of over 600 photographs, make this book the definitive record of a remarkable life. “I've been asked on a number of occasions to do a written book and I thought of the other side of the coin. I thought it would be unique to have an autobiography in photographs.” - Jimmy Page Jimmy Page by Jimmy Page is the photographic autobiography and visual history of the world’s most iconic guitar player. With incredible attention to detail, Page has chosen hundreds of photographs representing significant moments in his career: from a schoolboy with a rock-a-billy quiff through his extensive work as a session musician; including The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, ARMS, The Firm, Outrider, Coverdale & Page and Page & Plant; playing with Roy Harper and The Black Crowes; collaborating with P. Diddy and performing with Leona Lewis at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Both Genesis Publications and Jimmy Page have sifted through thousands of images representing the work of more than 70 photographers including some of the greatest names in rock photography – Ross Halfin, Kate Simon, and Gered Mankowitz, to name but a few. Included are a mixture of iconic portraits, rare and unseen photographs from Jimmy’s archive along with visas, photos and stamps from his own passports. Page has officially put pen to paper about his career taking the form of extended captions, which describe and document pivotal moments and events making this book an historical document and a definitive visual record of a remarkable life of music.          John Nichols's The progresses and public processions of Queen Elizabeth I: a new edition of the early modern sources / general editors, Elizabeth Goldring, Faith Eales, Elizabeth Clarke, Jayne Elisabeth Archer; associate general editors, Gabriel Heaton, Sarah Knight

Oxford, United Kingdom: Oxford University Press, 2014. 1st edition. An exceptional copy in the original gilt-blocked cloth. Particularly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and strong. Literally as new Physical description; 5 volumes: illustrations (black and white, and colour), maps (black and white); 25 cm. Notes; Includes bibliographical references and indexes. English or Latin. Summary; John Nichols's The Progresses of Queen Elizabeth (1788-1823) has long been an indispensable reference tool for scholars working on Elizabethan court and culture - despite the serious limitations of an antiquarian edition now two centuries old. This old-spelling edition of the early modern materials contained in Nichols's Progresses is edited to high and consistent standards, and based on a critical re-examination of printed and manuscript sources. It is structured by a narrative of the two sets of annual progresses undertaken by Queen Elizabeth I: the 'summer progresses,' when Elizabeth travelled throughout southern England and the Midlands, visiting cities as far afield as Bristol, Coventry, Norwich, and Southampton; and the 'winter progresses,' when Elizabeth moved between her residences in and around London, including Richmond, Hampton Court, and Whitehall. New editions of the major progress entertainments - Kenilworth, Woodstock, Elvetham, Cowdray, Ditchley, and Harefield - are set alongside accounts of civic receptions, tilts and Accession Day entertainments, and non-dramatic texts, many of which have not been published since Nichols, including verses delivered by Eton scholars before the Queen (1563); John Lesley's Oratio (1574); Gabriel Harvey's Gratulationum Valdinensium (1578); and the Oxford and Cambridge verses on the death of Queen Elizabeth (1603). The editions are supported by translations of all non-English material, full scholarly annotation, illustrations, and maps. This will make John Nichols's The Progresses and Public Processions of Queen Elizabeth: A New Edition of the Early Modern Sources the most comprehensive collection of early modern texts pertaining to the court and culture of Queen Elizabeth.          Henry & the author Sidney E. Berger, the bookbinder Gregor R. Campbell, the bookseller Robert D. Fleck, Jr., the artist Wesley W. Bates

Garmondo [i.e. Lexington]: Contre Kook Press [i.e. Contre Coup Press], 2014. Edition limited to 30 copies, 8vo, pp. [4], 29, [3]; 1 engraving by Bates, 1 photograph tipped in, silver japanese cloth, paper label on cover and spine, fine. The place of publication and publisher on the title are fictitious. The book was printed by Timothy Hawley of Contre Coup Press, in Louisville, Ky. The colophon notes that: "This book was initiated by Sid Berger. The book was set by hand in Lutetia, printed on Biblio paper. The wood engravings are by Wesley Bates. The book was bound by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. Long story short by Sid Berger: After Henry sold all his type and printing equipment, I called him and he was in the dumps. I felt bad for him and I wanted to raise his spirits.  So I called Tim Hawley, who has his Contre Coup Press...I told Tim I would write an essay about Henry if he would print it.  We decided to do it with others who had worked with Henry (Greg Campbell, Bob Fleck, and Wesley Bates)...and each author (and Henry) got 6 copies...The colophon says "30 copies", but in fact there were 31, since a special deluxe copy in full leather was done for Henry. Bob and I drove out to see Henry and present his copy to him...Also, since this is not a book that Tim did from inception to completion (since it was my idea and all of us wrote for it), he didn't want the imprint to be Contre Coup, so he has it as being printed in Garamondo by the Contre Kook Press. If you put it on the market, it is not a B&B title, but it is a Henry Morris book in its own way, so it should appeal to the B&B collectors.  They are, after all, essays about Henry, and they add to the information and lore about the B&B Press.
