South Polar Times Limited Edition with commentary volume

Folio Society, London 2012 - 2012 First Thus. 12 Fine Paperbacks. No inscriptions or bookplates. Fine magnetically sealing slipcase. Comes with a commentary volume which is Fine in Near Fine slipcase with very slight marks to front panel. A Folio Society facsimile edition, limited to 1,000 numbered copies of which this is number 741. The first complete facsimile has been created by The Folio Society in partnership with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), the British Library and the Scott Polar Research Institute. At the start of the 20th century most of the far places of the world had been explored. Only the Polar regions, bound in ice and well-nigh impenetrable, remained to be conquered. Captain Scott led two expeditions to the Antarctic, on the ship Discovery in 1902 and the Terra Nova in 1911. He and his men waited out the long months of winter darkness, carrying out scientific research, and then used the brief summers to explore the uncharted continent, culminating in 1911 with their ill-fated journey to the South Pole, forever etched on the national consciousness. The South Polar Times was a magazine created by members of Captain Scott’s expeditions to entertain themselves during the four months of Antarctic winter. Typed up, and illustrated with paintings, sketches and photographs, each issue was read aloud to all hands. They contain a mixture of the ‘grave and gay’, serious reports on the weather or fauna interspersed with cartoons, songs and articles that gently poke fun at members of the expedition. Together the material gives us an unsurpassed sense of their community: legendary personalities such as Scott, Shackleton, Wilson and Cherry-Garrard, as well as scientists and ordinary seamen, all of whom had been inspired to travel to the furthest reaches of the earth and risk their lives. "Only one copy has been produced and this has been made as complete and perfect as possible under our circumstances, in the hope that the whole thing may be thoroughly well reproduced with all the illustrations when we get home" - Scott's journal. Scott’s intention has been fully realised in this painstaking and exact reproduction of all 12 issues of the South Polar Times. The original manuscripts, typed by the various editors, illustrated with drawings, watercolours and with photographs printed by Herbert Ponting in his Antarctic darkroom, have a thrilling immediacy. Opening the facsimile is to feel oneself in direct contact with the group of men who began the first great scientific exploration of Antarctica. It conveys an unsurpassed sense of the camaraderie that supported them, the patriotic vision that inspired them and the stoicism and courage that enabled them to endure and make light of terrible privations. The South Polar Times is a powerful piece of history that shows us a heroic age in incomparable detail. The editions are beautiful and interesting in their own right: Scott, Shackleton and Bowers were all extremely talented writers, while Wilson was an excellent artist, and many others tried their hand at silhouettes, sketches and cartoons, including Lieutenant Barnes and Leading Stoker Arthur Quartley. Our modern fascination with the magnificent, lonely beauty of Antarctica is the legacy of the words and images left to us by these pioneers. UK Postage £3.20; Airmail to Europe £16.40; Airmail to Rest of the World £36.40. We only use airmail as surface mail can take up to 10 weeks [Attributes: Soft Cover]

London Includes the previously unpublished fourth volume. ?The owner of these volumes will possess an exact reproduction of the original ?South Polar Times? which appeared month by month during the winters of 1902-3, produced as they were for the sole edification of our small company of explorers in the Discovery, then held fast in the Antarctic Ice.? Thus begins Captain Scott's preface to the three volume facsimile of short stories, essays, caricatures, and drawings edited by Shackleton, which became a major diversion for the men on board the Discovery during the long sunless winter from 23rd April until 21st August, and which was continued during the Terra Nova expedition by Apsley Cherry-Garrard. This facsimile is an even closer copy of the original unique issues, collected in a neat buckram box. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Professionally (and beautifully) framed with large white borders on solid black wood and Plexiglas by Craig Cotsones/Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago. Full frame size is 18 X 21 inches. Eminently suitable for display. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Wayne F. Miller's "Strike Captain During Protest by The Packing House Workers, March 1948". One of his single most beautiful portraits. It appears as Plate #40 in his classic account, "Chicago's Southside, 1946-1948", published by the University of California School of Journalism in 2000. "Chronicles a black Chicago: The South Side community that burgeoned as thousands of African-Americans, exclusively from the South, settled in the city during the Great Migration. One of the first Western photographers to document the destruction of Hiroshima and the survivors of the bombing, Wayne F. Miller had just returned from his stint as a World War II Navy combat photographer under the direction of Edward Steichen when he received two concurrent Guggenheim Fellowships to fund his Chicago project. In addition to affording a glimpse into the hopes and hardships shared by a community of migrants, the images reflect the enormous variety of human experiences and emotions that occurred at a unique time and place in the American landscape. A superb testament to the genius of the photographer, to the spirit of the people the images portray, and to the moment in American history these photographs capture" (Publisher's blurb). "Somehow or other, people accepted me, they didn't feel I was trying to take advantage of them. I didn't ask them to stand there, or put their arm there. I never interfered a bit as to what they were doing" (Wayne F. Miller). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item/artwork for Wayne F. Miller collectors. This framed original photographic print is very prominently and beautifully signed in black-ink pen on recto by Wayne F. Miller. This title is a great photographic print.          The Sound and the Fury Limited Edition with glossary and commentary

Folio Society, London 2012 - 2012 First Thus. 2 Fine Hardbacks. No inscriptions or bookplates. Fine slipcase. Limited to 1,480 copies of which this is number 481, numbered by hand. Printed on Abbey Wove paper using 14 different colours of ink. Gilded top edge. Quarter-bound in vermilion goatskin leather. Blocked in gold. Paper sides printed letterpress with type ornaments designed by Russell Maret. 320 pages. The Commentary volume: bound in buckram. Blocked in gold. 232 pages. Both volumes presented in cloth-bound slipcase with inset leather titling label. Book size: 10¼" x 6½". In October 1928, the young writer William Faulkner tossed a recently completed manuscript to his friend and agent Ben Wasson: ‘Read this, Bud. It’s a real son-of-a-bitch This one’s the greatest I’ll ever write.’ Twenty years and several great novels later, Faulkner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his 'powerful and artistically unique contribution to the modern American Novel'. The Sound and the Fury – searing, tragic, extraordinary in its innovation – is the most powerful of all. Indeed, this novel had become one of the most influential in 20th-century American literature. Faulkner knew that what made the book ‘a real son-of-a-bitch’ was what Wasson called ‘the sheer technical outrageousness and freshness of the Benjy section’. Faulkner wished to find a publisher whose attitude to printing matched the innovation of the writing – one prepared to print the novel in several colours. Nearly 100 years later, The Folio Society is fulfilling that vision with a new limited edition that is a landmark in literary publishing. The Sound and The Fury is acknowledged as one of the masterpieces of 20th-century literature. It takes the modernist narrative devices of stream-of-consciousness, time-shifts and multiple changes of viewpoint to an unprecedented level of sophistication. Faulkner was well aware that readers would find it difficult, and employed italic and roman type to convey its ‘unbroken-surfaced confusion’, but when his agent attempted to standardise and simplify the system this prompted an angry objection from Faulkner. He quickly jotted down eight time-levels in Benjy’s section, ‘just a few I recall’, and wished that it could be ‘printed the way it ought to be with different color types’, but he concluded pessimistically, ‘I don’t reckon it’ll ever be printed that way’. The Folio Society determined that it could be printed that way, and drew on the expertise of two noted Faulkner scholars to work on fulfilling Faulkner’s idea. Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk undertook the painstaking task of identifying each different time-level to be coloured, while keeping the original italic/roman shifts. We can never know if this is exactly what Faulkner would have envisaged, but the result justifies his belief that coloured inks would allow readers to follow the strands of the novel more easily, without compromising the ‘thought-transference’ for which he argued so passionately. In his Nobel Prize acceptance speech, Faulkner stated that a writer’s sole purpose was to convey ‘the old verities and truths of the heart, the old universal truths lacking which any story is ephemeral and doomed – love and honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice.’ The Sound and the Fury is filled with those emotions, and the reader cannot help but care deeply for Faulkner’s characters: for Quentin begging his sister not to marry ‘that blackguard’ Herbert Read, for the bleak self-centred cry of Mrs Compson, ‘I am a lady,’ and for Benjy waiting by the golf course just to hear the golfers call ‘caddie’, at which he begins to howl, mistaking it for his sister’s name. One of the most beautiful Artist Books of our time. Limited Slipcased Edition, as stated. 25 copies were made in all. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Chicago to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect, in particular the way its rich tonal range captures the dramatic lighting and skin texture of the subjects. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Sandro Miller's "RAW: Steppenwolf". His magnificent portraits of The Steppenwolf Theatre actors. This is the photographer's deeply personal homage to the OTHER great passion of his life, his first love being Irving Penn, who persuaded and inspired him to become a full-fledged photographer. Here is the sublime madness, carnal sensuality, and palpable excitement of The Steppenwolf Theatre Company of Chicago, which Sandro Miller considers to be "the world's greatest independent theatre company". The book is in two parts, "The Founders" and "The Players". These are NOT production shots, but viscerally powerful portraits of actors' faces, masks of Tragedy and Comedy: Joan Allen, Terry Kinney, John Mahoney, Martha Plimpton, Gary Sinise, Jim True-Frost, and Alan Wilder, among others. Ends with a brilliant Coda, "The Malkovich Sessions", devoted to John, THE iconic Steppenwolf actor. "RAW" brilliantly contrasts with and complements (it does not replace) an earlier book, Skrebneski's "Steppenwolf 25" (2001). The latter celebrates the company with tribute-essays by such luminaries as the great novelist Don DeLillo (whose plays were premiered by Steppenwolf), the theatre critic Richard Christiansen, Sam Shepard, and Kurt Vonnegut. Here, in valuable textual transcriptions, the actors get to speak, eloquently and movingly, for themselves and the company they created, a Chicago and American legend. An absolute "must-have" title for Sandro Miller and Steppenwolf collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition, indicated as such on the title page, and it is very prominently and beautifully signed in pencil by Sandro Miller. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in is an original 8.5 X 8.5 inch photographic print, "Gary Sinise", also very prominently and beautifully stamped and signed on verso by the photographer. This Artist Book is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only copy of the Limited Slipcased Edition available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates, 1 original print. Steppenwolf received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton, the highest honor the United States Government bestows on an individual or institution. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SANDRO MILLER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

         The Faerie Queene Limited Edition

Folio Society, London 2012 - 2012 First Thus. Fine Hardback. No inscriptions or bookplates. Near Fine slipcase. Paper cover of slipcase unstuck in top rear left hand corner of the slipcase. 1,712 pages in total. Book Size: 10¾" x 8½". Bound in Wassa goatskin, blocked in gold. Ribbon markers. Limited to 1,000 copies of which this is number 102. Gilded top edges. Printed on watermarked laid paper. Presented in a wooden slipcase covered in Toile Vendôme, with a sliding tray in the base for ease of use. One of the most beautiful works of the Arts and Crafts Movement - a gorgeous facsimile of a piece of publishing history. Strictly limited to 1,000 numbered copies. The sixteenth century was the golden age of English poetry. Edmund Spenser burned to create an English equivalent to Virgil's Aeneid. Instead of lauding the Caesars, he would glorify Elizabeth, the Virgin Queen. Where Virgil connected Rome to the heroic past of Troy, Spenser would forge a link between Tudor England and the mythological age of King Arthur. The result was The Faerie Queene, a rich allegory which elevated Protestant virtues through the medium of a romantic, chivalric epic. Today the power of Spenser's story and the beauty of his verse still live in 'famous memory'. Rather as Spenser himself looked to 'antique times', the Arts and Crafts movement of the late-19th century looked back nostalgically to the Middle Ages. Walter Crane, an illustrator and associate of William Morris, was inspired by Edmund Spenser. He, after all, was a quintessentially English writer, dedicated to the noble aims of justice, honour and chivalry to which Crane himself, a socialist and romantic, was also committed. He illustrated the poem so lavishly that this sumptuous edition became a legend of book production in its own right. Born in London around 1552 to a family of modest means, Edmund Spenser was educated as a poor scholar at Pembroke College, Cambridge. He managed to gain work with the government, and served in Ireland, where he met the influential court favourite and poet, Sir Walter Raleigh. His own poetry, including The Faerie Queene, was written in between his official duties and he succeeded in gaining an introduction to read his works to the Queen in 1589. The Queen was so impressed with his epic that she granted Spenser an annual pension of £50. Elizabeth's chief minister Lord Burghley is supposed to have grumbled, 'What, all this for a song!' Spenser's Irish estate was burned during an attack in 1598. He left Ireland a year later and returned to London, where he died aged 47. His coffin was interred in Westminster Abbey close to Chaucer, an indication of the immense stature he had acquired. His inscription hails: 'Prince of Poets in his tyme; whose Divine Spirrit needs noe othir witnesse then the works which he left behinde him.' Each Book tells the adventure of a different knight, representing a virtue. Prince Arthur, who is searching for the Faerie Queene, acts as a common thread through the Books, assisting the various knights in their quests. Spenser wrote to Sir Walter Raleigh describing an ambitious plan of twelve Books, and perhaps even more. He completed six, which, at a total of 35,000 lines, makes The Faerie Queene the longest poem in the English language. Such is the quality of his poetry and storytelling that it is hard to think of The Faerie Queene as unfinished, rather it presents a series of adventures as timeless as any myth or legend. It takes the modernist narrative devices of stream-of-consciousness, time-shifts, and multiple changes of viewpoint to an unprecedented level of sophistication. Faulkner was well aware that readers would find it difficult, and employed italic and roman type to convey its 'unbroken-surfaced confusion', but when his agent attempted to standardize and simplify the system this prompted an angry rejection from Faulkner. He quickly jotted down eight-time levels in Benjy's section, 'just a few I recall, and wished that it could be printed the way it ought to be with different color types,' but he concluded pessimistically, 'I don't reckon. It'll ever be printed that way'. "The Folio Society determined that it could be printed that way, and drew on the expertise of two noted scholars to work on fulfilling Faulkner's idea. Stephen M. Ross and Noel Polk undertook the painstaking task of identifying each different time-level to be coloured, while keeping the original italic/roman shifts" ( Folio Society, from the promotional material ). To assist the reader, a bookmark is supplied with all colors and their matching dates, as well as line numbers marked along one side to aid in cross-referencing between the text and commentary. London: The Folio Society: 2012. 1091 of 1480 copies, numbered by hand on the colophon. Folio (10¼ x 6½" inches), novel quarter-bound in vermillion goatskin leather and commentary volume bound in buckram. Gilded top edge. Printed on Abbey Wove paper using 14 different colours of ink.          Wonder Might Ignite.

Berkeley, California:: Set in Motion Press,, 2012.. Edition of 22. 5.5 x 9"; 16 pages. Letterpress printed with wood type and photopolymer plates. Bound in printed wraps. Signed and numbered by the artist on the back cover. This book not only ignites, it gently catches fire with quiet pyrotechnics of language, illustration, and design. Casey Gardner: "This book opens with the lines, She carries a mercury vapor light, kindling and flickering an inkling blaze, and proceeds into pyrotechnics of possibility. The reader is lead through the pages by a character who abides in a state of wonder & spontaneity careening between poetry and science to explore creative and destructive forces. Through words and images of incantatory ignition, the book opens to graphic embellishments, such as The Explosimeter, a graph detecting locations between intertia & momentum and expansion & contraction. The tale begins with seeds of fire, moves through desire and the unforeseen, and culminates in sparks of potential.

Ecco Press, New York 2012 - First edition of the definitive biography of Leonard Cohen. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Signed by Leonard Cohen on the title page. Rare signed. I'm Your Man is an intimate and insightful appreciation of the man responsible for "Suzanne," "Bird on a Wire," "Hallelujah," and so many other unforgettable, oft-covered ballads and songs. Based on Simmons's unparalleled access to Cohen--and written with her hallmark blend of intelligence, integrity, and style, I'm Your Man is the definitive biography of a major musical artist widely considered in a league with the great Bob Dylan. "A thoughtful celebration of the artist's life.Simmons has deftly narrated Cohen's evolution. In the end, this biography has the oddest effect: as soon as you finish reading it you feel an overwhelming impulse to go back and begin again, revisiting the story with what you've learned along the way" (A.M.
