        Infinite Jest [First State]

New York: Little, Brown, 1996. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Printing (full number line), in First State dust jacket (incorrectly spelling William Vollmann as "Vollman" on back panel) of the author's magnum opus. Thick 8vo: [4],1079,[1]. Publisher's quarter-bound French blue cloth spine over periwinkle paper-covered boards, spine stamped in silver. Superb, a virtually pristine copy, square, clean, and tight. "The plot of Infinite Jest-which revolves around, among other things, a lost, unwatchably beautiful art film and a conspiracy among wheelchair-bound Quebecois secessionists-is decidedly secondary to the painfully funny dialogue and Wallace's endlessly rich ruminations and speculations on addiction, entertainment, art, life and, of course, tennis." (Time 100) To help readers slice through the novel's dense thickets of prose, Wallace included 98 pages of "Notes & Errata." The title is from Hamlet, Act V, Scene 1, in which Hamlet holds the skull of the court jester, Yorick: "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio: a fellow of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: he hath borne me on his back a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is!" N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         A group of 7 Autograph and Typed Letters Signed ("Pete"), to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr and wife Mary Lee

Various places, 1996. 7 pp., on Katharine Houghton Hepburn letterhead. 8vo. Overall very good with old folds. 7 pp., on Katharine Houghton Hepburn letterhead. 8vo. Hepburn to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. The friendship of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr and Katharine Hepburn spanned the entirety of their long careers; the two starred together in Morning Glory in 1933 - Hepburn's third film, for which she won her first Oscar. The present group of letters testifies to the warmth with which they continued to regard each other in the later years of their lives, and in several Hepburn refers to creative projects on which she is then at work. Hepburn includes "Pete" in her signature in all of the letters, and addresses Fairbanks as "Pete" as well - evidently a private joke between the two. In a letter of March 23, 1981, Hepburn thanks Fairbanks for his work as narrator on a PBS documentary on Hepburn's career released a few weeks earlier: "You are a sweetie to have labored on my behalf. I've not yet seen it but everyone says that you did a lovely job." She continues in the same letter about the touring production of "West Side Waltz," the play written by Ernest Thompson for which she would ultimately receive a Tony nomination: "We're a big hit out here [Los Angeles?]. They care about the play - The end that is. But he really can write & the audience laugh & laugh." In a letter of December 8, 1981, she writes "Aren't you sweet - It does look like a big hit - What luck," referring either to On Golden Pond, which had received limited release in the U.S. four days earlier, or the Broadway run of "West Side Waltz," which had begun in November. She adds, "Hope you can come to the play." In a letter of December 26, 1982, Hepburn writes of a car accident she'd been in a few weeks earlier: "Well - here's from the fool ... Did I look down - or up or in or out - who will ever know - right square into a telegraph pole! We'll recover hopefully but my oh my casts & neck braces & ribs & bore bore bore ..." In a letter of March 5, 1986, referring to a television tribute to Spencer Tracy, in which Hepburn gave an emotional reading of a letter she wrote to her former lover following his death, she tells Fairbanks: "Thank god it's over -- apparently a success - The things we're asked to do - Wow!" Provenance: Estate of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr

Perek Shirah MS. Or. 54 (OR. 12,983) Facsimile. An Eighteenth Century Hebrew Book of Praise

London Facsimile Editions 1996 2 volumes. 13 cm, 36 pp + 56 pp. 1 of 550 copies. The facsimile is printed on a specially-milled paper in up to seven colours, bound in aged vellum, and tooled as the original. The commentary volume, printed on Fabriano Ingres, contains a short introduction by Malachi Beit-Arié, Ludwig Jesselson Professor of Codicology and Palaeography at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, explaining the origins of the Perek Shirah text; a translation of the text by Jeremy Schonfield, Lecturer at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies; and a description of the manuscript by Emile Schrijver, a specialist in eighteenth-century Hebrew manuscripts at the Institute of Jewish Studies in Amsterdam. The foreword is by Gideon Falter. The facsimile and commentary volume are housed in a hand-marbled slipcase.Perek Shirah is a cosmic hymn to the Creator in which all of Creation, including the winds, clouds, all species of birds, mammals and fish sing praises for their very existence. It opens with the promise that those who recite it "are assured of a place in the World to Come" and ends with the hope that their study will be transformed into good deeds that will win heavenly reward. The praises are expressed in the form of scriptural quotations, reflecting the Jewish belief in the interdependence of study and prayer. This tenth-century work also reflects an acute awareness of the spiritual dimension of nature and the environment. This charming Hebrew and Yiddish manuscript was probably written by Aaron Wolf Schreiber Herlingen of Gewitsch, who worked in Vienna, probably the most famous Hebrew scribe of the eighteenth century. Its vellum leaves contain exquisite miniatures of many of the 'worshippers' within magnificent scenes from nature.

        Parma Psalter - Facsimile

London Facsimile Editions 1996 2 vols 15cm, the facsimile volume is 226 leaves (452 pp) and the commentary volume 275 pp. The Parma Psalter binding was recreated by a Master Binder in London. All that remains of the original binding is the spine which has been copied in minute detail on Havana sheepskin, gold tooled weathered and aged by hand. The front and back boards have been covered in the finest English parchment. The commentary volume is bound in a dark brown calf skin and gold-tooled on the spine. Of all medieval Hebrew manuscript Psalters (tehillim), one of the earliest and most important to survive is the masterpiece Ms. Parm. 1870 (Cod. De Rossi 510), the treasure of the Palatina Library in Parma, Italy. This profusely illuminated book of Psalms was written and decorated in about 1280, probably in Emilia in Northern Italy. Its 452 pages contain the biblical text in a clear, large vocalized Hebrew hand. Each psalm is illuminated and numbered, and many are exquisitely illustrated with musical instruments or with scenes described in the text. In Hebrew. The facsimile and commentary volume are boxed in an elegant hand-marbled slipcase edged in morocco. 1 of 550 copies of which 500 were for sale. Fine condition.

SHV Think Book [Thinkbook] (Chinese edition)

Utrecht : [SHV Holdings], 1996 - Hardcover, [2136]p, illustrations ; 25 cm. Very good, just minor wear to boards and spine. Limited edition, not in commercial trade, of 500 copies. Text in Chinese. This eleven-centimetre-thick book, which runs to 2,136 unnumbered pages, created a sensation when it was published in 1996. To this very day young typographers come to the museum to have a look at the book weighing 3.5 kilos. This is on account of the typographical tours de force involved in its manufacture: laser print, perforations, complex raster imaging and other creations seldom manifested in books. Surely this book is the most expensive anniversary volume ever published. On the occasion of the centenary of the Steenkolen Handels-Vereeniging (SHV) [Coal Trading Association] Paul Fentener van Vlissingen (1941-2006) commissioned designer Irma Boom and art historian Johan Pijnappel to make a book that would reflect the motto of this family business – ‘Look for the unusual’. They worked for well over five years on this anniversary volume, which eventually cost about 1.3 million Euros. For the interior special paper was made that will last for centuries. A steel plate was attached to the hollow spine, reflecting the years 1896 and 1996 on the book-block in such a way that it reads like ‘2096’ (‘as if, with its hundred-year-old history, the book itself holds a mirror up to the coming century’). On the edge of the book, which contains eight bookmarks, a tulip field is printed which changes to a poem by Gerrit Achterberg (De Bolero van Ravel) as the pages turn. The printer, Rosbeek in Nuth, had to stop all other work for three months in order to print this book. It was published in two editions: a Dutch edition in white (4,000 copies) and a Chinese edition in black (500 copies). The Chinese edition is black because white denotes the colour of death in Chinese culture. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A Game of Thrones

London: Voyager. London, Voyager, 1996. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy of a book that barely requires an introduction given the excellent ongoing HBO adaptation. The present title is the first in the series that I fear might last longer than George does. Some looseness to the jacket and a bit of bumping to the edges, spine tips softened. Page block a little yellowed and toned. Cover art by Jim Burns [6497, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1996.
