Frederick Sommer: "poetry And Logic" And "the Poetic Logic Of Art And Aesthetics"

Los Angeles, CA: The Getty Museum(1994). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 6 pages. Rare Frederick Sommer collectible set. Fine copies of "Poetry And Logic" Exhibition Catalog and "The Poetic Logic of Art And Aesthetics", both signed by Frederick Sommer. "Poetry And Logic": Exhibition Catalog. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at The Getty Museum Los Angeles in 1994-1995. Presents Frederick Sommer's "Poetry And Logic". A sequence of haunting animal "still-life" carcasses that perfectly capture the artist/photographer's singular aesthetic. Accompanied by an illuminating Essay by Winston Naef, Curator of Photography. "The Poetic Logic of Art And Aesthetics": The first and only edition. The pamphlet was self-published in 1972 as a softcover original only. Contains the full text of what is, in effect, his Artistic Manifesto, supplemented with the eulogy, "Words Spoken In Memory of Richard Nickell At A Gathering of His Friends". Both texts are unsurpassed in the history of photography in their delineation of what art photography can and should be. For Frederick Sommer, all true art, especially what he believed the mission and future of photography to be, is direct experience mediated by both thinking ("logic") and feeling ("poetry"). It is never just about beauty, technique, or even mastery. Some artists tend to emphasize thinking at the expense of feeling (like, for example, many Conceptual artists). Others emphasize feeling at the expense of thinking (like far too many landscape photographers). The task is to achieve a delicate balance between the two, which has been Sommer's own lifelong quest. Frederick Sommer initially worked for his architect father. He earned his MFA at Cornell University, moved to Arizona, and restlessly pursued various creative activities: Photography, drawing, collage, and painting. He cultivated deep friendships with Edward Weston, Charles Sheeler, Max Ernst, and Aaron Siskind. Inspired by landscape, the human figure, and music, Sommer was profoundly intrigued with the laws of Nature, specifically death, decay, and regeneration, which he explored in photographs of animal carcasses merging with the desert. Sommer deserves fuller mainstream recognition for the mysterious yet crystalline precision of his work, his uncanny ability to discern - to see through - things, and thereby re-define photographic art as a process of intellectual understanding and emotional response. An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, set for Frederick Sommer collectors. These copies of "Poetry And Logic" Exhibition Catalog and "The Poetic Logic of Art And Aesthetics" Pamphlet are both very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Frederick Sommer. They are signed directly on the pages themselves, not on a tipped-in page. These titles are late-modern classics. As far as we know, this is the only such signed set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. 4 plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER FREDERICK SOMMER TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).

         Essays on Economics and Economists.

University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1994 - First edition of this collection of articles by the Nobel Prize-winning economist. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed and dated by Ronald Coase on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. This is a series of 15 essays written by the 1991 Nobel laureate in economics. Unlike most such collections, the essays are not primarily about Coase's work. The first half of the book contains essays on methodology: what economists do and how they do it. Coase's explanations are thought-provoking. As Coase demonstrates, economics in its theoretical and empirical work is more normative than most economists would prefer to believe. Simple principles are often ignored, replaced by complex ones beyond the ken of economics. The remaining essays are biographical sketches that focus primarily on famous English economists such as Adam Smith and Alfred Marshall. These essays provide insight into the roots of modern economics. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

This book by the Irish-born, London-based tackle dealer William Blacker was a revolutionary work and a landmark in the history of fly fishing: "For a start, he gave totally different methods for tying trout and salmon flies, and much of his writing was taken up by a manual devoted to the details of how to dress individual flies […] Where the salmon fly is concerned, Blacker was the torch that illuminated the night and the pattern he created suddenly lifted the sights of many of his contemporaries. His fame spread so far and wide that is wasn't long before he could afford to charge three pounds for a month's tuition of four hours each day at trout and salmon fly tying."          Bernd & Hilla Becher: Fabrikhallen (factory Buildings And Industrial Facades)

Munich, Germany: Schirmer/Mosel(1994). First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 276 pages. Collection of landscape-cum-place photographs. One of the most important photography books by Bernd and Hilla Becher. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Bernd and Hilla Becher: Oversize-volume format. Black cloth boards with pale gray titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Brief Introduction by Klaus Bussmann. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bernd and Hilla Becher's "Fabrikhallen". Factory Buildings and Industrial Facades, photographed in the most rigorous, taxonomic, and severely beautiful manner. "Vastly influenced the international photography world within the past few decades. Their unique genre of photography is somewhere between topological documentation and art, lining up with the aesthetics of the Neue Sachlichkeit Movement of the 1920's of Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, and Albert Renger-Patzsch" (Publisher's blurb). As the founders of the "Becher School" (AKA "Dusseldorf School"), they have, in turn, influenced several generations of documentary photographers and artists who have themselves become international superstars: Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth, Candida Hofer, Axel Hutte, Elger Esser, and even the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. "They shot only on overcast days so as to avoid shadows, and early in the morning during the seasons of Spring and Fall. Objects included barns, water towers, coal tipples, cooling towers, grain elevators, coal bunkers, coke ovens, oil refineries, blast furnaces, gas tanks, storage silos, and warehouses. At each site, the Bechers created landscape views of the entire plant, which set the structures in their context and showed how they relate to one another. They excluded any details that would detract from the central theme and instead set up comparisons of viewpoint and lighting through which the eye is led to the basic structural pattern, which is allied to the philosophy and practice of the New Topographics Movement" (Philip Gefter). The Bechers did not invent the grid (Mondrian did), but it is the origin and basis of their aesthetic and practice. The grid remains the most advanced iconography of Modernism. It is THE aesthetic, finally, of purity, of emotional self-regulation, the postponement of instant gratification in exchange for lasting aesthetic reward. Surely, no one (or duo) has pursued this single-minded aesthetic to its logical conclusion in photography as single-mindedly as the Bechers did. An absolute "must-have" title for Bernd and Hilla Becher collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on the front free endpaper by Bernd and Hilla Becher. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great art photography book. This is one of very few such double-signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online command as much as $600 even though they have serious flaws ("Near Fine", "Very Good"). A rare signed copy thus. 264 plates. Winners of the Erasmus Prize, the most prestigious European artistic prize, in 2002. Winners of the Hasselblad Award, the most prestigious photography award, in 2004. Two of the most important and influential photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER BERND AND HILLA BECHER TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 3888147301.

[San Francisco: The Authors], 1994. [60]pp. printed on rectos only. Oblong small 12mo. Stiff plain wrapper. Illustrations. A couple of smudges to wrapper, otherwise about fine. First edition. A quite early production by Handler and Brown, preceding his first novel under his own name, as well as the sequence of works ascribed to Lemony Snicket. A public trade edition appeared in 2014 under the McSweeney's imprint, with the text ascribed to Lemony Snicket. Accompanied by issues #5 and #6 of AMERICAN CHICKENS (San Francisco, Feb. & May 1994), each printed on one side of an 8.5 x 11" sheet, folded to eight panels of text and illustrations. The illustrations are credited to "L.B." and it is possible the whole enjoyed some input from Handler as well.          The Gospel According To Jesus Christ

New York City, NY: Harcourt Brace(1994). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 377 pages. The author's third novel to be translated into English. Now widely considered Jose Saramago's greatest novel. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Jose Saramago's "O evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo" in a felicitous English translation. Masterpiece. Perhaps the most irreverent yet at the same time, also the most moving re-telling of the story of Jesus, Saramago's irony is deployed in a novel that amounts to a "re-write" of The Gospels, the latter being, in his view, invented works of fiction after all (they were all written hundreds of years after Jesus of Nazareth died). Saramago's novel provoked an outcry in Roman Catholic Portugal. It was debated in Parliament and withdrawn from consideration for the European Literature Prize. The controversy hurt Saramago deeply. He moved to the island of Lanzarote permanently, which explains why he was absent on the world stage at the peak of his fame (and signed copies of his books are among the rarest of all). Saramago's Gospel is closely linked with all of his oeuvre, acutely so with his late, post-Nobel Prize work. Often described as a satirist, Saramago's work goes much deeper, and he is perhaps the greatest modern literary ironist since Franz Kafka. Saramago's novel is infinitely superior to say, Norman Mailer's "The Gospel According To The Son" (1999) partly because he writes as someone steeped in Catholic culture, and also because he is a much greater writer than Mailer could ever be. "Arguably the greatest writer of our time. He throws a dazzling flash of lightning on his subjects" (The Chicago Tribune). Saramago was an anomaly who came out of nowhere, seemingly born a genius. Every single page of every single book he has ever written makes the reader feel that he or she is in the hands of an unsurpassable Master. An absolute "must-have" title for Jose Saramago collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Jose Saramago. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Among the Nobel Laureates and other great writers of our time, Saramago's signature was probably the most difficult to get because he rarely left Lanzarote, the island he moved to at the height of his fame. Now that he is dead, he isn't signing any more copies. And yet, signed copies of his books, while not exactly cheap, remain under-priced as compared to those of say, Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Cormac McCarthy. While they are great writers, Saramago will be regarded by posterity as a greater writer than both of them, and there is no British or American novelist of the last fifty years, living or dead, who comes close to Saramago's achievement (except, according to Harold Bloom, for Philip Roth at his best). A rare signed copy thus. Regarded by Harold Bloom as one of the two greatest novelists of our time (the other being Philip Roth), Jose Saramago will be read as probably the greatest European novelist of the last fifty years. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOSE SARAMAGO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0151367000.

Luis Gonzalez Palma: "la Rosa" Retrospective Souvenir Poster

Chicago, IL: Art Institute Of Chicago/Schneider Gallery(1994). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Luis Gonzalez Palma collectible item. A fine copy of "La Rosa" Souvenir Poster of the artist/photographer's very first museum retrospective in the United States, signed by Luis Gonzalez Palma. Limited Edition of 2 signed copies, one for the Permanent Collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the other for his Chicago Gallery. Both were made by Luis Gonzalez Palma himself to commemorate the show. The Poster is now rare. Poster size is 20 X 24 inches. Professionally and archivally framed on Plexiglas and solid black wood. Full frame size is 24 X 30 inches. Weighs 10 pounds. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Chicago, Illinois to the highest standards. Published on the occasion of the artist/photographer's inaugural retrospective exhibition in the United States, "The Persistence of Beauty, The Persistence of Pain", held at The Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. Presents, in its Limited-Edition Poster format, Luis Gonzalez Palma's "La Rosa". Woman as "The Rose", his most iconic image and masterpiece. Other than the original print itself (which now commands tens of thousands of dollars, if you can find one), this is surely it. Shows a woman whose serenely beautiful face is brilliantly "framed": Garlanded with white and toned roses and crowned with a human skull. It sums up in one image Luis Gonzalez Palma's post-Romantic aesthetic and artistic concerns at the same time: Eternal beauty, historical pain; the essence of Latin America, the pain of her colonial history. Luis Gonzalez Palma's art is about paradox, showing The Sublime while also alluding to the more oppressive side of Latin-American, post-colonial culture and society, where women and American-Indian minorities continue to be treated as inferior human beings, and remain subject to the obsolete standards of morality that a male-dominated, colonialist society seeks to perpetuate. The late Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez used "La Rosa" for the cover of his great novel, "Of Love And Other Demons". Vibrant and universal in its appeal, it has also been used in other contexts and settings numerous times (often without the artist's consent), and not just in the United States and Latin America. "Gonzalez Palma's images unfold with increasing significance, resulting in an underlying sense of tension and foreboding that is only slightly eased by their sheer loveliness" (A. D. Miller). "I manipulate in order to emphasize the heart-rending" (Luis Gonzalez Palma). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Luis Gonzalez Palma collectors. This copy of "La Rosa" Limited-Edition Retrospective Souvenir Poster is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in pencil on recto by Luis Gonzalez Palma. It is signed directly on the poster itself, not on a tipped-in page. This Souvenir Poster is now collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy available online, is professionally and archivally framed, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: The "La Rosa" original print (duotone with oil varnish) now commands tens of thousands of dollars (if you can find one). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. It will be packed carefully for both domestic (and where feasible, international) transit. A rare signed poster thus. One of the finest Latin-American artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible poster. (SEE ALSO OTHER LUIS GONZALEZ PALMA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

Name Dropping: Tales From My Barbary Coast Saloon

New York City, NY: HarperCollins Publishers(1994). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 212 pages. Rare Barnaby Conrad and Clara Gatzert Spiegel collectible item. A fine copy of the author's memoirs, signed by Barnaby Conrad with a one-of-a-kind presentation/portrait on the book itself. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Barnaby Conrad's "Name Dropping". His memoir. "Diplomat, bullfighter, writer, artist, Conrad has led a colorful life. This aptly titled memoir contains anecdotes about well-known friends and acquaintances, including Bing Crosby, Truman Capote, David Niven, Lucille Ball, and Sinclair Lewis. Many of the stories recount evenings at El Matador, the San Francisco carbaret Conrad opened with the proceeds from his best-selling novel, 'Matador' (1952) " (William Gargan). A larger-than-life figure who has written numerous books and remains the only American matador ever, Barnaby Conrad is also a brilliant artist. His portraits of various figures are interspersed throughout the book. An absolute "must-have" title for Barnaby Conrad collectors. This copy is magnificently signed, dated (in the year of publication), and inscribed in blue pen on the half-title page by the author: "Lots of X'Mas love to Clara from Mary and Barny 1994". In addition, Barnaby Conrad drew an exquisitely detailed portrait of the recipient, Clara Spiegel, catching a monster-size trout fish. This title is a contemporary classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy with original drawing of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Clara Gatzert Spiegel (1904-1997) was the quintessential American cosmopolitan figure, a cross between Brooke Astor and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. The wife of the Chicago-based magnate Frederick W. Spiegel, she was a bona-fide member of the American elite. She was also an accomplished novelist, short story writer, and patron of the arts. Like her close friend Ernest Hemingway, her passion, aside from writing, was the great outdoors, whether skiing in Sun Valley or trout fishing near her Idaho estate. Her biography recounts how she caught a 23-inch trout while seated in a wheelchair two weeks before her death in 1997 at the age of 93. A rare signed copy thus. Two of the iconic American figures of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO PETER DUCHIN TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 006258507X.

Publisher's black leather with gilt motif to upper board, gilt lettering and raised bands to spine, bevelled edges, all edges gilt, in black cloth solander box; pp. xxxvii + 259, 22 plates, with fly in recessed oval mount to front pastedown; fine. First published in 1855, this was the first illustrated edition of the work first isued as The Art of Angling in 1842. This book by the Irish-born, London-based tackle dealer William Blacker was a revolutionary work and a landmark in the history of fly fishing: "For a start, he gave totally different methods for tying trout and salmon flies, and much of his writing was taken up by a manual devoted to the details of how to dress individual flies [...] Where the salmon fly is concerned, Blacker was the torch that illuminated the night and the pattern he created suddenly lifted the sights of many of his contemporaries. His fame spread so far and wide that is wasn't long before he could afford to charge three pounds for a month's tuition of four hours each day at trout and salmon fly tying." (Andrew Herd, The Fly (2001). pp. 208-209).

Publisher's green cloth. - "What distinguishes it from most earlier bibliographical catalogues of architectural books is that its compilers not merely describe and collate the BAL's copies, but have checked them against British Library and other copies, and have tried wherever possible to elucidate the books' publishing histories and to account for any observed peculiarities in their collations... Those prepared to bit the bullet and invest in this catalogue will not regret their decision" (from a review by Hugh Pagan, in Antiquarian Book Monthly, April 1995, pp.26-27). Reprinted Munich: K.G. Entries 2882-3740. Publisher's green cloth. - The present volume includes Scamozzi (14 entries), Serlio (12 entries), Vignola (39 entries), and Vitruvius (54 entries). "For Scamozzi the editors have contributed an invaluable chronological survey, with locations, of all fifty-seven known editions of the Idea della architettura universale, from 1615 to 1838 (the year following Scolari's early attempt at a bibliography of Scamozzi). A similar survey is provided for the more complex Books 1-5 of Serlio, including the Extraordinario libro of 1551, Book 7 of 1575, and Book 6 unpublished until the twentieth century, as well as the various collected editions. The nightmare of Vignola's Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura is also treated in exemplary fashion with a listing of the eighty-nine editions to 1700, and takes up some sixty pages of the catalogue. It is unlikely that anyone will improve on this masterly summary of such intractable material" (from a review by Paul Grinke, in The Library, seventh series, volume 4, 2002, pp.323-324). The Library's two copies of the undated editio princeps of Vitruvius are assigned to the Roman press of Eucharius Silber and dated "1486?" Entries 3741-4202. Publisher's green cloth. - The foreword to the catalogue by Peter Fuhring surveys past cataloguing of architectural books, and claims that the BAL catalogue "offers a model for future generations of bibliographers". The "Supplement" catalogues architectural periodicals (entries 4182-4202), books omitted from previous volumes for various reasons, and some recent acquisitions; the substantial "Addenda and Corrigenda" (pp.2481-2510) presents new attributions, additional publication details, and details of copies held by other libraries.
