LITTLE BUDDHA": 4 ORIGINAL TYPESCRIPTS for Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci's "LITTLE BUDDHA", with a screenplay by RUDY WURLITZER from a story by BERTOLUCCI. Each different, with one HEAVILY ANNOTATED IN FELT by the screenwriter RUDY WURLITZER. [Together with]: 325 ORIGINAL SNAPSHOT PHOTOS OF LOCATIONS FOR THE FILM IN NEPAL & BHUTAN and related ephemera, including letters from Rudy to Bernardo Bertolucci.

Los Angeles & New York: [Favored Artists Agency, CiBy 2000 & Serprocor Anstalt] [1993]. [1993]. - - Four typescripts of the screenplay for "Little Buddha" by Rudy Wurlitzer, all are typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheets and are differently bound, including one consisting of loose pages laid into a stiff color illustrated publicity folder. All of the typescripts appear to be different drafts of the screenplay written as Wurlitzer and Bertolucci's conception of the film developed. Indeed, the first line of each typescript differs one from the other. Only one typescript is dated, that one being identified as a continuity script is likely the closest to the final filmed version. The others, described below, appear to be evolving states of the screenplay.A typescript consisting of the title and 109 loose pages is bound into a stiff black folder with a clear cover. This typescript, which may well be the earliest of the 4, is heavily annotated in black felt by Rudy Wurlitzer with substantial corrections and annotations within the text and profuse notes penned on many of the facing blank pages throughout. One of the first annotations penned by Rudy on the verso of the title leaf indicates that he may still be researching the material as he reminds himself to "Ask Matthew Kapstein about Vedas". Throughout the early part of the action, he has changed the person who speaks several of the lines from "Lama Karmay" to "Lama Norbu". Rudy has, in many instances, penned editorial notes such as "After scene in kitchen / cut to Siddharta / then Sebastian / then airplane".Of the other typescripts, the longest is bound in stiff white wrappers with the "Favored Artists' Agency" logo and addresses on the front cover. This 130 page typescript credits the story to Bernardo Bertolucci and the screenplay to Rudy Wurlitzer.Another typescript, at 88 pages, appears incomplete and the pages are laid loose in a glossy stiff illustrated "International Sales" folder. Finally, a 97 page typescript bound in clear plastic is identified as the "30th March, 1993 (Continuity script)". The story, as with the previous typescripts, is credited to Bernardo Bertolucci but credit for the screenplay is now shared between Rudy Wurlitzer and Mark Peploe. The typescripts are accompanied by related material including a 19 page "Outline" of 96 scenes which are to take place in varying locations. The outline for the first scenes describes them thus "1) JATAKA TALE: The story of the sacrificial goat and the corruption of Brahmin ritual". Followed by "2) SHEDRE: Lama Norbu ends the story to CHOMPA and a room full of young Monks."Within a folder Rudy Wurlitzer has kept photocopies of contracts with the Writer's Guild and others and print-outs of e-mail attachments.A typed letter signed from Angela and Kevin Arnold addressed to Rudy and dated March 30, 1993 relate how their own 5 year old son was enthroned as an "American tulku" by Chagdud Tulku Rimpoche before 200 practitioners and Nyingma Lamas. Enclosed with the letter is a color photograph of the young man in ceremonial Tibetan attire and the Fall 1992 "Newsletter of Chagdud Gonpa" titled "The Wind Horse" which includes an article about the ceremony in which 5 year old Wyatt Arnold was elevated to tulku. Two typed letters signed by Rudy addressed to "Bernardo" mention research he is doing as he prepares to write the screenplay. In one he mentions that "In a few hours I'll see Sogyal Rinpoche. Unfortunately I haven't finished his book but I still have several things to ask him. Later on this afternoon Lynn and I will drive to the country and I'll start on the script." In the other, a denser letter, he writes of visiting "Professor Bob" who will be "very useful on the Buddha sections." He mentions that the professor thinks they should make an effort to include the Dalai Lama in the story and that he "would do all in his power to convince His Holiness to play himself."Also included is a real-photo postcard illustrated with a color portrait of Rudy seated on the step in front of a monastery between Bertolucci at one side [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

         Mobsters

      c. 1930s-40s. Satin Tie belonging to Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, 52” long, 4.5” at its greatest width. Leaf theme with geometric shapes, purple lavender and light pink wide swing necktie circa 1930s and 1940s. No labels.

Provenance included picturing, in color, this tie. “Certificate of Authenticity” signed “Peter J. Hauser 6-15-1993,” 1p, 8.5” x 11”. No place, June 15, 1993. In part, “Virginia Hill was born on August 26, 1916 and rose to become the most famous lady in organized crime. In 1951 Time Magazine described Virginia as the ‘Queen of the Gangster Molls’ … Through her life Virginia did all kinds of jobs for the Mafia and in 1951 was brought forth before the Kefauver hearings. Virginia would eventually end up in Hollywood and become involved with Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel. After the Flamingo and Siegels execution Virginia would meet and marry ski champion Hans Hauser in 1950 … and eventually flees to Europe after she is indicted for tax evasion. In 1966 Virginia contacts Joe Adonis & Joey Epstein trying to get money hinting it would keep her from publishing her memoirs. On March 22 she traveled to Naples, Italy to spend the night with Joe Adonis. A few days later Virginias body is found in the woods near Salzburg, Austria covered in snow dead from an apparent suicide with a note near her body saying she ‘was tired of life’. Virginia Hill was 49.

“On this day the 15th of June, 1993 I certify the following item 1940s purple lavender & light pink satin tie belonging to Benjamin ‘Bugsy’ Siegel … whom my mother was romantically involved with and in my opinion was the only real love of my mothers life. Family and friends say my mother was never the same after Benjamin Siegel was murdered on June 20, 1947. This 1940s Purple and Pink Satin Tie along with other items belonging to Benjamin Siegel were left in the possession of my mother Virginia Hill at her home on 810 Linden drive in Beverly Hills, California after Siegels murder there. As her only son I took over my mothers estate after her death in 1966.”

Bugsy Siegel’s tie, here offered, was purchased by University Archives from the great nephew of a member of the 42 Gang, which, according to “The Mafia Encyclopedia,” was “certainly the best ‘farm team’ Chicago’s Capone mob ever had … the Capone men accepted one 42er … Sam ‘Mooney’ Giancana … As Giancana moved upward, he brought a number of 42ers after him. Among those who went on to make a considerable mark in the Chicago syndicate were:” Fifteen names are listed including the great uncle of the seller of this tie who purchased it from Peter J. Hauser in 1993 and who has signed Hauser’s COA as Witness.

, September 1793, 1993. September 1793. Stitched legal accounting ledger on laid paper with soft wraps. Dated 1793. 11.75" x 7.25". Two stitches remain with the balance no longer present. Most of the internal leaves of the book are detached, and unbound. Soft wrap covers detached. Rear cover is no longer present, the front has substantial edgewear, with significant paper loss, toning and staining. Most of the spine is missing. Owner's name and date scripted to front wrap as "Charles Lees/List of Causes/September 1793"An important relic personally owned by Charles Lee as United States Attorney General under George Washington. He was elected to office in 1795 and continued in this capacity until 1801. Contains a detailed and heavily scripted list of pending or completing legal cases and appeals. Included in the ledger are dates, the names of the parties, and occasional reference to the judgments (such as "reversed", "affirmed", "sent to rules", "decree", 'dismd with forte"). 25 leaves, (50 pages), last page missing most of the paper.A wonderful piece of history. It is unclear whose hand wrote the contents or cover wraps, but quite possibly portions of the ledger are written in the hand of Charles Lee.

In addition to Eliot's first Indian Bible in 1663 and to Bibles in Chippewa, Mohawk, Hawaiian, Cherokee, Dakota, and Choctaw, the portfolios contain leaves from the first American Bibles in English, German, French, Spanish, and Hebrew, the first American New Testaments in Greek, Portuguese, Dutch, and Swedish, the first illustrated American Bible, the first printed on American paper and with American-made type, the first Confederate Bible, the first Bible translated by a woman, the first Bible printed for the blind in America, and more. The informative introductory essay, bibliographical descriptions, and commentaries are printed on separate sheets (partly to facilitate display).

The 1462 Fust & Schoeffer Bible

Bruce Ferrini /Hamill & Barker, Akron & Evanston 1993 - Folio. 40pp. One of 166 copies. With an original leaf from the fourth edition of the Latin Bible, printed by Gutenberg's successors. The leaf contains text from Deuteronomy 9:17 through 12:6, a significant passage in which Moses returns from Mount Sinai with the Ten Commandments and places them in the Ark of the Covenant, and God sets out his plan to lead the Israelites to the Promised Land. It is adorned with with a very pleasing ten-line initial "I", as well as a two-line initial "A", and a three-line initial "H" on the verso. Leaves from the Penteteuch are rare; a leaf with a significant passage such as this one is rarer still. Koenig, a noted authority and scholar of fifteenth-century manuscripts and German incunabula, proposes in the accompanying essay that this fragment is the only known copy of the 1462 Bible to have been illuminated in England for the English market. Text includes a census of extant copies of the 1462 Bible and an introduction by Christopher de Hamel. Bound in quarter leather and paper-covered boards. The book and the original leaf are housed in a protective cloth folding case. Announcement laid in. Fine. (Chalmers 202). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
