Sweynheym & Pannartz and the Origins of printing in Italy: German Technology and Italian Humanism in Renaissance Rome

Bird & Bull Press for Philip J. Pirages, (McMinnville, OR) 1991 - Octavo. 132pp. One of 275 copies printed for Philip J. Pirages. The leaf is from a copy of Volume I of the Sweynheym and Pannartz first edition of Nicholas of Lyra's Postilla super totam bibliam, completed on 18 November 1471 in the Palazzo Massimo in Rome-only 239 of 452 leaves of that copy remain. The leaf bears a two-line rubricated initial on the recto. Sweynheim and Pannartz, the earliest printers outside Germany, worked at Subiaco and Rome, making Humanist and classical texts available to a wider audience. Since their press runs were normally only 275 copies, their editions are now seldom seen and costly. This is a rare opportunity to study an example of their type, first used in 1467 and now recognized as the first truly Roman font. Each chapter of the accompanying book begins with a 9-line initial in blue ink. Book bound in quarter-morocco with marbled paper over boards. Note from publisher laid in. Leaf housed in a mylar envelope framed behind a hinged cloth mat in the lid of a folio-sized blue cloth clamshell case, with a fitted pocket for the book. Some marking on outside of box, else fine. Bookplate. (Chalmers 197). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         Passage: A Work Record

New York City, NY: Alfred A. Knopf(1991). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 300 pages. The photographer's third retrospective collection. Now considered a late-modern photography classic. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Irving Penn and Nicholas Callaway: Oversize-volume format. Cloth boards with titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Irving Penn. Essay by Alexander Liberman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Irving Penn's "Passage: A Work Record". Some of the most iconic, moving, and beautiful photographs ever taken in the 20th century by one of its greatest photographers. The book is aptly titled: The passage of time, place, unique cultures, and beautiful men and women was Irving Penn's greatest subject (and remains as such for photography itself). The portrait of two shabbily dressed American-Indian children shyly posing for the camera, their hands resting on an ornate European colonial-period table, is classic Irving Penn, a testament to his greatness and humane-ness as a photographer. It is everything the 20th century is about in one simple yet stunning image: Imperial colonialism and indigenous culture, The Old and The New, Rich and Poor, North and South, East and West. Irving Penn died on October 7, 2009 at the age of 92, his place in photographic history permanent and secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Irving Penn collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in black pen on the half-title page by the photographer: "Irving Penn 1991". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. As was his custom, Penn encircled his signature. This title is a great photography book. This is one of very few such signed and dated copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online are subsequent printings or have serious flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. A rare signed copy thus. 470 plates. Irving Penn's "Moments Preserved" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela.          Original Leaf from the Kleine Print Bybel c. 1750. [Miniature Book]

Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles 1991 - 21pp. One of 60 copies of this miniature leaf book printed by Pall Bohne for Dawson's Book Shop. With an engraved, illustrated leaf from an extremely rare miniature two-volume picture-Bible, printed in The Hague by Daniel Langeweg, circa 1750. The original leaf contains a full-page wood engraving executed by Jan Besoet from the Book of Zechariah, chapter IV, verse 2, which depicts Zechariah's vision of a golden candlestick upon which a bowl, seven lamps, and seven pipes sat, with an olive tree on either side. The text of the book includes a brief essay by Ruth Adomeit on the history of this bible. Pall Bohne has added a note explaining how he made the endpapers using a technique called "Dutch Gilt," which is contemporary with Langeweg's "Bybel." Extremely fine in leather-backed patterned paper boards. (Adomeit C51; Bradbury, p. 66; Chalmers 196.5). (2 1/2 by 1 7/8; 64x47mm). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         BODMER'S AMERICA

Alecto Historical Editions, London 1991 - 765 x 620 mm. (30 1/8 x 24 1/2"). No. 23 OF 125 COPIES. Loose as issued in five buckram folders inside a cloth solander box, paper labels. WITH 81 HAND-FINISHED COLOR PLATES, heightened with gum arabic. One corner of the (heavy) box very expertly repaired, two-inch closed internal tear to title sheet seamlessly mended, other very minor signs of use to the box, but the portfolios and their plates as new, even the tissues guards in pristine condition. Printed using the original engraved plates for "Travels in the Interior of North America in the Years 1832-34," this is a splendidly produced facsimile of a monumental work on the American West that offers a very attractive alternative to the prohibitively expensive original. Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93) was working as a landscape illustrator when he was hired by the Prussian naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied for an expedition to examine and describe the wildlife and Indian tribes of the American West. The men travelled up the Missouri River from Saint Louis to Montana over a 13-month period, and Bodmer documented the landscape and people of the region in great detail. In the words of the website of the National Agricultural Library, "although Maximilian and Bodmer were not the first to explore the American West and record their observations, they were the first team combining a trained, dedicated scientist with an especially skilled illustrator, whose collaboration resulted in a work of unique historical, scientific, and aesthetic importance." According to ANB, "for over a century Bodmer's aquatints have been regarded as one of the most significant contributions to the iconography of the western frontier." In his portraits of American Indians, Bodmer "achieved a level of accuracy and sensitivity that no other artist of the American frontier has ever surpassed. His work is particularly valuable for its detailed rendition of the Indians' ornamentation, attire, and implements. Indeed, Bodmer was far superior to his better-known contemporary George Catlin, whose work lacks the Swiss artist's fidelity and meticulous attention to detail." In addition to depictions of native Americans, the "Travels" (the work was also produced in German and French) contains a number of memorable images of flora and fauna, terrain, frontiersmen, steamboats, and more. After the printing of the original editions, the location of the plates remained unknown until their rediscovery at Castle Wied in the 1950s; they eventually ended up being donated to the Omaha Joslyn Art Museum, which then collaborated with Alecto Historical Editions in London on the present spectacular reproduction. In an effort to achieve thoroughgoing authenticity, the work on our illustrations was done using the 19th century poupée printing technique, a laborious and exacting method involving the application by hand of multiple colors on the same plate. Copies of the original editions--which seldom appear in appealing condition--are now extravagantly expensive, costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. And copies of the present facsimile simply do not appear (this is the only copy we could trace that was not sold directly to institutions at the time of production). The original price of the present facsimile in 1991 was $85,000.       Santa Barbara, California: Pamela Zwehl-Burke, 1991. Santa Barbara, California:: Pamela Zwehl-Burke,, 1991.. Edition of 10. 8 x 11.25"; 10 pages. Laminated drawings. A pair of laminated sheets spiral bound with plastic spiral at fore-edge. Pamela Zwehl-Burke: "I made ten or twelve drawings about roots and tangles and organic mysteries, which connected at the edges, following on a four-print series about learning to swim, which showed a woman's swimsuited body under the water ending at the surface of the water, not showing her head. It became clear to me that the dense tangles and potent growth and interactions, treasures and dangers were standing in for the Unconscious, and I used the same image for a very small high-edition scroll (for the International Society of Copier Artists) called 'Ah, Consciousness.' .... The idea of hyperdensity and complexity seemed to work even better when the drawings were photocopied onto plastic and bound to overlap." (Three remaining copies)

Nobel Lectures in Physics WITH "Deep inelastic scattering: The early years" [Taylor, pp. 573-595] WITH "Deep inelastic scattering: Experiments on the proton and the observation of scaling" [Kendall, pp. 597-614]; "Deep inelastic scattering: Comparisons with the quark model" [Friedman, pp. 615-628] in Reviews of Modern Physics, Vol. 63, No. 3, July 1991

American Physical Society, Lancaster 1991 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF A SPECIAL 1991 ISSUE OF REVIEWS OF MODERN PHYSICS INCLUSIVE OF THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPERS OF THE THREE PHYSICISTS AWARDED THE 1990 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS. EACH PAPER IS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. The 1990 prize was awarded to Jerome I. Friedman, Henry W. Kendall, both of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Richard E. Taylor, of the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), "for their pioneering investigations concerning deep inelastic scattering of electrons on protons and bound neutrons, which have been of essential importance for the development of the quark model in particle physics" (Nobel Prize Committee). Their work provided a profound and lasting "breakthrough in our understanding of the structure of matter" (ibid). "The three prizewinners were key persons in a research team which in a series of investigations found clear signs that there exists an inner structure in the protons and neutrons of the atomic nucleus. What has become known as the "SLAC-MIT experiment" paved the way for further investigations of the innermost structures of matter. Ever since the beginning of this century, researchers have studied the inner structure of atoms. Our knowledge has increased successively, among other ways through the discovery (around 1910-1930) of the nucleus of the atom and its nucleons. During the 1950s there arrived on the scene a large number of what were termed hadrons, whose properties resembled those of nucleons. To reduce these to order, the concept of quarks was introduced, at the beginning of the 1960s. Yet it was impossible to see any traces of quarks in nature until the SLAG-MIT experiment itself. "The discovery was made when protons and neutrons were illuminated with beams from a giant "electron microscope" - a two-mile-long accelerator at SLAC in California, USA. The inner structure was interpreted to mean thatquarksform the fundamental building blocks of protons and neutrons. The electrically neutral "glue" binding the quarks together is calledgluons. All matter on earth, including our human bodies, consists to more than 99% of quarks with associated gluons. The little that remains is electrons" (Nobel Prize Press Release). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Vol. 63, No. 3, July 1991. Original printed wraps. (10.5 x 8 inches; 263 x 200mm). This is not an ex-institutional copy. As noted, each paper is signed by its Nobel Prize winning author. Near fine condition inside and out. [Attributes: First Edition]

SAN FRANCISCO SEX DIARY / CALENDAR

[San Francisco, CA]: N.P., 1991. Monthly calendars filled in with the sex diary of a Chinese-American postal worker in San Francisco who chronicles his interactions with different women, including excruciating detail of phone calls, sex acts, how much money he spends to give them gifts and rent, utilities money, where he drives them, when and why he refuses their calls, when they fight, when they have their periods, etc. Reading the sagas of Erma, Gerri (changed spelling to Jerri), Cora, Juanita, BeBe, Mildred, Pearl, etc. is a fascinating view into the diarist's inner life. Asterisks notate when he has intercourse with one of them. More often he notes, "no sex" for one or another reason. The set of 15 monthly calendars, filled with tiny writing, encompass the years 1971-1976, 1981, and 1983-1991.

         The White Castle

New York City, NY: George Braziller(1991). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in Fine Dust Jacket. 161 pages. The author's first novel to be translated into English. Now considered a contemporary classic. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Orhan Pamuk's "The White Castle" in a felicitous English translation. Masterpiece. In the 17th century, a young Italian scholar sailing from Venice to Naples is taken prisoner and delivered to Constantinople. There he falls into the custody of a scholar known as Hoja ('Master'), a man who is his exact double. In the years that follow, the Slave instructs his Master on Western science and technology, from medicine to pyrotechnics. But Hoja wants to know more: Why he and his captive are the persons they are and whether, given knowledge of each other's most intimate secrets, they could actually exchange identities. A colorful and intricately patterned triumph of the imagination" (Publisher's blurb). Pamuk's books are censored and often banned outright in his native Turkey, a culture that has to strike a delicate balance between (Eastern) Islam and (Western) secularism. The threat to one's freedom makes writing even more urgent and turns talented writers into great ones. His most passionate critic/admirer in America, the late great novelist John Updike, chose "Snow" as the best novel of the year 2004, bar none. An absolute "must-have" title for Orhan Pamuk collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Orhan Pamuk. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. Pamuk's signature on this copy is spectacular, the single most beautiful signed copy we have ever seen. Laid-in is a pristine copy of the Souvenir Material of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a great book. This is one of very few such signed copies of the First American Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Many copies available online are price-clipped, remainder-marked, and have other major flaws. And yet, some copies command as much as $1500. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003 for "My Name Is Red". Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006, the first Turkish writer to be so deservedly honored. One of the greatest writers of our time. A fine collectible copy.       - Small folio (279 x 215 mm.). Unbound. 5 pp. Notated in pencil on 12-stave music paper, rectos only. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996). Spectrum no.1 'Symphonies in Sonic Vibration' (1955) and Leiyla and the Poet (1959) have been recorded." Denise A. Seachrist in Grove Music Online. An early pioneer of electronic music, El-Dabh composed one of the earliest known works of tape music, or "musique concrète," in 1944, The Expression of Zaar.          Sweynheym & Pannartz and the Origins of printing in Italy: German Technology and Italian Humanism in Renaissance Rome

(McMinnville, OR): Bird & Bull Press for Philip J. Pirages, 1991. Octavo.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF A SPECIAL 1991 ISSUE OF REVIEWS OF MODERN PHYSICS INCLUSIVE OF THE NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPERS OF THE THREE PHYSICISTS AWARDED THE 1990 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS. The inner structure was interpreted to mean that quarks form the fundamental building blocks of protons and neutrons. The electrically neutral "glue" binding the quarks together is called gluons.
