Hikari to Kage [Light and Shadow]

(Tokyo): (Tojusha), (1982) - 4to (295 × 217 mm), pp.216. 100 black-and-white photographs. Double black endleaves. Printed French-fold wrappers, black, text in grey and white; light wear to extremities. Printed dust-jacket, black, text in grey and white, black-and-white photographic image silk-screened to front; light wear to edges with an abrasion to fore-edge, spine lightly toned, adhesive mark to rear flap. Publisher’s printed wraparound band, grey; lightly rubbed, wear to edges, two nicks with creasing to front, strengthened with tape on verso. Near-fine in an excellent dust-jacket with a very good band. First edition, one of Daido Moriyama’s key books. Following the publication of Shashin yo Sayonara (Farewell, Photography) and Karyudo (A Hunter) in 1972, Moriyama experienced something like a crisis of creative confidence and largely stopped taking photographs for several years. In 1981 he began taking photographs seriously attempting to capture light in a simple and direct way. Some of them were serialised in Shashin Jidai magazine, and the entire series is published here in Hikari to Kage, which also contains his first collection of writings on photography.          Portrait de Hans Hartung. Photographie Originale de l'artiste

Large original photographic portrait in black and white directed and shot by Marc Trivier.Unsigned silver print, like most of Trivier's works. Unique proof drawn by the artist.Small tear on the upper edge and stain on the white part of the photograph.Photographs of artists, madmen, trees or slaughterhouses, Marc Trivier approaches all these subjects with a look as precise as intense."In its cosmogony, every thing, every being, vegetable, animal or human, deserves the same respect. For all are confronted with the same law of brass: loneliness. (Luc Desbenoit)The beauty that emanates from his photos comes from this nudity. There is no editing or cropping. We find in his work the same square format that traps our eyes in photographs where the makeup of color is rejected for an incisive black and white. Since all artificiality has disappeared, we are not dealing with the staging of a subject but with a presence exacerbated by the radiant and singular light, witness of a moment of life and not of pose. It is this light, linked to and obsessed with Trivier's medium, that gives his works the aura that makes them so present:"Of thirty-five years of photographic practice, of obsessions, it is perhaps that which remains: a singular mode of recording of the burning of light, declined from one image to another, in a succession propositions that are similar and yet each is as singular as the fraction of time to which it refers. (Marc Trivier)Taken from the front, with a look at the subject directed towards the lens, the photographs that Marc Trivier realizes personalities of the 1980s are not those of a star portraitist, but result on the contrary from a desire to desacralize:"Instead of being a portraitist of writers and artists among many others, he is marginalized by his device: under the pretext of adjustments, he makes his models wait, he makes them ask several minutes which gives them a weary air. He may be waiting for a more natural behavior. And we find ourselves facing Francis Bacon in precarious balance, Samuel Beckett, Jean Dubuffet or Michel Foucault more or less packed in their chair. Intimate images. ". (A picture of tifoxing Marc Trivier, S. Rousselle-Tellier, in Marges, 2004)Photographed in their personal universe, most of the time their room, the subjects surrender themselves, no longer master their image. The imbalance that results reveals the fragility of these strong personalities, and allows Trivier to restore the unity of the intimate body and the public work."I read Genet; for me Genet, it was letters on a book. And then one day I saw his portrait, it was like a fracture. How was it possible that these signs are also someone? To make a portrait is to tie up the name and the face. (Marc Trivier)Warhol, Foucault, Beckett, Dubuffet ... the greatest writers and artists have posed for Trivier. At the same time, the artist is also interested in the margins of society, which men do not want to see. He then photographs the lunatics and slaughterhouses he places next to celebrities. By the end of the 1980s his work was unanimously recognized and he received the prestigious Young Photographer Award from the International Center of Photography in 1988 as well as the Prix Photographie Ouverte (Charleroi). After the Palais de Tokyo in Paris and the Musée de l'Elysée in Lausanne, the Casino in Luxembourg, the European House of Photography in Paris devotes a major retrospective to him in 2011.          Bom-Crioulo. The Black Man and the Cabin Boy. Translated from Portuguese by E. A. Lacey.

San Francisco: Gay Sunshine Press, 1982 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles gilt to spine and front. No jacket as issued. Very slight rubbing to tips, excellent condition. First English edition, first printing, very scarce cloth issue, publisher Winston Leyland's own copy with his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper. Winston Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing and won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, which was notable for its pioneering anthologies of gay writing from other cultures, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era. The vast majority of the clothbound copies of Gay Sunshine Press books were sold to libraries, and are consequently very scarce. Bom-Crioulo "was the first completely open gay novel to be published anywhere in the world (1895). The book provoked such controversy in Brazil that author was threatened with court proceedings; it has since become a classic and is still in print in that country." (Gay Sunshine bibliography).          Christina's World: Paintings and Pre-studies of Andrew Wyeth

Houghton, Mifflin Company, Boston 1982 - Wyeth, Andrew. First edition. Illustrated. [vi], 281, [1] pp. Oblong 4to. The Wyeths and the Kirsteins. Inscribed in Betsy Wyeth's hand, "For Lincoln and Fido / with love / Betsy & Andy," with "Andy" in the artist's hand.An outstanding association copy of the monograph on the painting which initiated the relationship between Andrew Wyeth and his intimate friend and adviser, Lincoln Kirstein (1907-1996). Kirstein, who was on the board of MoMA, met Wyeth after the museum acquired CHRISTINA'S WORLD in 1948. Wyeth was still largely unknown at that time, and he quickly came to rely on Kirstein for support and honest criticism of his work. "Kirstein appointed himself Wyeth's friend, admirer, mentor, and stern critic - in essence a supersuccessor to NC. [.] Wyeth thinks that in the 1950s he needed Kirstein to push him toward more form in his work, more solidity" (Meryman, Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life (1998) p. 239, 243). Kirstein, who disdained most abstract art, was essential in providing Wyeth the confidence he needed to continue work in the face of hostile critics who derided his art as sentimental and unsophisticated. Wyeth was fond of quoting Kirstein's dismissive opinion of the critics, "Why do you want approval from those horses' asses?" (ibid, p. 390).Kirstein was a father-figure to two generations of Wyeth artists, and as Andrew's son Jamie developed his own artistic gifts, Kirstein began to transfer his attention to the younger Wyeth. "After posing for nineteen-year-old Jamie, Kirstein more or less shifted his allegiance from Andrew and became Jamie's friend and mentor. Kirstein told Betsy, 'You gave me the only son I ever had'" (ibid, p. 275)"Fido" was Kirstein's wife, Fidelma Cadmus (1906-1991), a painter and the sister of the artist Paul Cadmus. Original mustard cloth, illustrated dust jacket. Some rubbing and minor soiling to boards, a few scuffs to jacket Illustrated. If we miss you at Hoggers, settle in ? By the time you throw some stones on Lenana's Kiburi we will be back. 'M. Buno' is in charge of the grass - Kamande is in charge of the booze ? In hopes the opening 'Rhebus' has not boggled your minds ?" Don and Iris Hunt were co-founders of the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.          `Iridology: The Science and Practice in the Healing Arts, Volume (Vol.) 2 (Two / II)

Bernard Jensen, Publisher, 1982. (xxvi), 580 pages. Profusely illustrated with high-resolution color photos. Four foldout illustrations. "It is possible, through an iridology analysis, to discern the location of a problem and then, following proper nutrition, the chemical and structural changes in the body will be visually apparent in the iris. This process provides a necessary guide and method to the practitioner to help improve the patient's condition and to better monitor the patient's progress. Above all, it provides a perspective through which a correlation of all the drugless arts may be achieved, emphasizing not the treatment of a disease but the care of the patient." - from author's prefatory note. Average wear. Binding intact. Moderate quantity of markings and high-lighting to contents. A sound copy of this treasured reference.
