         Handwritten Manuscript Lyrics of Dreamin'

1979. Debbie Harry's handwritten manuscript (fair copy), titled at the top, and signed twice, of Dreaming Is Free, her brawny and lusty, gold selling single. The complete lyrics, all in her own handwriting, 27 lines (169 words), in blue ink, all of them on the recto side of an 8 1/2" X 13" sheet of yellow paper. Celestial Debbie has sealed her signature at the end with a kiss in pink lipstick. Ably framed (UV) with a color photograph of D. H. (white skirt and top, hands in pockets, head tilted, big smile). Lightening of the ink in a few places, otherwise fine condition, and this MS is so fair to behold, that if I had a tail, I'd wag it. Dreamin' was the lead single from Blondie's 4th album, Eat to the Beat, a red hot, new wave, punk rock hit, a sorceress' mix of beauty and power, from the "Buddy Holly/Rave On" school of songwriting, released in the gentler days of punk, just before the '70s gave way to the body piercing generation of living wind chimes, whose only fear was a junkyard magnet. The manuscript was gifted to a poorly promoted and lightly attended charity auction in 1992 and she came away from the encounter soured by the experience. So if you plan to get your own Debbie Harry manuscript, you better start stalking her right now, and be sure to come equipped with a donut for bait, a 3 layer blindfold, a rag soaked in chloroform, and a trunk lid that won't open from the inside. Near fine.

         Suttree

New York: Random House, 1979. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. First Edition, First Printing. Association copy, inscribed by people who appear to have known Cormac McCarthy or inspired characters in Suttree. In the original dust jacket with the price of $12.95 intact. In Fair condition, in a Good Minus dust jacket. The boards show soiling, with heavy wear at the corners. Spine cloth heavily worn. Front hinge starting. Pages are in fair condition as well, with water warping, light pencil marking. The dust jacket shows edge wear, surface wear and creasing. The book was lent out by a woman named Kit, who had each reader write an inscription. The front free end paper and the following page have a total of four inscriptions to a Kit and Barb, and the inscriptions suggest the people who wrote them knew Cormac McCarthy personally, or found themselves written into the book itself. A truly one-of-a-kind copy, offering an interesting glimpse into the background of the novel.

Handbook of Physiology. A critical, comprehensive presentation of physiological knowledge and concepts. Section 2: The Cardiovascular System. 4 in 6 Vols. (all publ.).

      - American Physiological Society, Bethesda, Maryland, 1979-1984, 4°, ca. 3900 pp., zahlreiche Abbildungen, 6 orig. Leinenbände; St.a.Tit.; frisches Exemplar. 1.: The heart / volume editor, Robert M. Berne. 2.: Vascular smooth muscle / volume editors, David F. Bohr, Andrew P. Somlyo, Harvey V. Sparks, Jr. 3/1+2: Peripheral circulation and organ blood flow / volume editors, John T. Shepherd, Francois M. Abboud. 4/1+2: Microcirculation / volume editors, Eugene M. Renkin, C. Charles Michel. "The first edition of the Handbook of Physiology section on Circulation appeared between 1962 and 1965. This publication of the American Physiological Society consisted of three volumes that covered many aspects of the physiology of the heart and circulation. Since that time knowledge has advanced slowly in some areas of physiology, more quickly in others. Meanwhile the total body of information has grown almost exponentially, making it increasingly difficult to organize and meld old and new data to provide the reader with a comprehensive, critical appraisal of cardiovascular physiology. Nevertheless, the aim of the revised second Handbook section, retitled The Cardiovascular System, is to accomplish these goals and produce authoritative reference works with extensive bibliographies. The books will be useful to students of physiology at all stages of study, to professional physiologists, and to interested scien tists in related disciplines. The utility of the Handbook of Physiology, Circulation has been proved by its continued and ongoing use by many investigators and teachers, a condition the editors hope will also be true for this revision, but the accelerated pace of cardiovascular and other research will probably demand a subsequent edition in a shorter interval of time."          Autograph Letter Signed, in English, 2 separate folio pp with a 3 separate page folio addendum, all on printed "Erte" stationery, Paris, France, May, 7 1979 with signed transmittal envelope

Erte discusses the illustrations to be included in "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," published in 1979 by Dover (reprinted in 2016). He gives detailed notes on the costume selection and placement to Stanley Applebaum, Editor-in-Chief at Dover. "Erte's Theatrical Costumes in Full Color," is a collection of 49 of Erte's exotic and historical costume designs for theater productions (and for well-known theater personalities), ballets, Folies-Bergere, and the like from 1911-1975. Included in the book are designs for a fan bearing slave girl, worshipper of Horus, wife of Russian Boyar, Ceres, a mermaid, and a gypsy dancer. The published book includes changes Erte listed in our letter. For example, the cover shows a costume for Ganna Walska in "Manon," 1920. In the letter, Erte lists this work as being on p. 10, suggesting that after receiving this letter, Applebaum changed the placement of the costume design.  The Gift-bearer for the show "Aladdin" at the Folies-Bergere, 1927 is in the book and in the letter is listed as being on p. 19. Erte mentions the design for the Monster from Scheherazade which is also in the book. Erte refers to Salome Estorick who wrote the book's preface. Erte writes, "I am sending you the information you asked for. To tell the truth I am not very happy about the selection of the illustrations - I think they could be much more typical of my work. First of all the design which I suppose is intended for p.1 is not a theatrical costume but an evening dress (so it has to be replaced). Then I think that there are too many costumes for Sheherazade [sic]; - I believe that four of them would be sufficient; the ones I like best are: "Monster" (p. 43), "Lady-in-waiting" (p. 44), "Shahriar" (p. 46) and "Jester (side 3). I should be very happy if you could replace the two costumes for a children ballet (p. 24 and p. 25) and the Chinese costume (p. 37) by something more effective. Would you kindly get in touch immediately with M. and Mr. Estorick at the Grovesnor Gallery in London (48 South Molton Street. Tel - 1-6290891) - they could supply you with some other designs. [Salome Estorick wrote the preface for Theatrical Costumes]. I am terribly sorry to give you so much trouble - but I really should love the new book would be as beautiful as the preceding ones you did. With my kindest regards, Cordially yours Erte 3 page addendum, separate folio Erte stationery sheets, Erte lists page numbers and titles of illustrations or comments on the illustration, starting with "Side 2...          Handbook of Physiology. A critical, comprehensive presentation of physiological knowledge and concepts. Section 2: The Cardiovascular System. 4 in 6 Vols. (all publ.).

American Physiological Society, Bethesda, Maryland, 1979-1984, 4, ca. 3900 pp., zahlreiche Abbildungen, 6 orig. Leinenbände St.a.Tit. frisches Exemplar. 1.: The heart / volume editor, Robert M. Berne. 2.: Vascular smooth muscle / volume editors, David F. Bohr, Andrew P. Somlyo, Harvey V. Sparks, Jr. 3/1+2: Peripheral circulation and organ blood flow / volume editors, John T. Shepherd, Francois M. Abboud. 4/1+2: Microcirculation / volume editors, Eugene M. Renkin, C. Charles Michel."The first edition of the Handbook of Physiology section on Circulation appeared between 1962 and 1965. The books will be useful to students of physiology at all stages of study, to professional physiologists, and to interested scientists in related disciplines. The utility of the Handbook of Physiology, Circulation has been proved by its continued and ongoing use by many investigators and teachers, a condition the editors hope will also be true for this revision, but the accelerated pace of cardiovascular and other research will probably demand a subsequent edition in a shorter interval of time."          A TESTAMENT OF FAITH. A LEAF FROM A COPY OF THE FIRST AMERICAN BIBLE, TRANSLATED INTO THE LANGUAGE OF THE ALGONQUIN INDIANS BY JOHN ELIOT AND PRINTED AT CAMBRIDGE IN NEW ENGLAND IN THE YEAR 1663

Boston: Charles E. Goodspeed & Co, 1979. ONE OF 87 COPIES printed and bound by the Stinehour Press. This very attractive little leaf book contains a desirable leaf from Eliot's Indian Bible, the first Bible printed in America, along with a brief essay on its significance. In the words of Darlow & Moule, the Eliot Indian Bible "constitutes the earliest example in history of the translation and printing of the entire Bible in a new language as a means of evangelization." Darlow & Moule adds that this Bible "was the first scripture printed in North America, and also the first version prepared for a pagan people in their own language. John Eliot performed the Herculean task of learning the difficult Algonquin tongue, of translating, unaided, the entire Bible in this unknown and unwritten language, of overcoming many technical difficulties, and of then teaching the Indians to read their own tongue. Samuel Green, the printer, was aided greatly by James Printer, an Indian compositor and corrector of the press. . . . The language is now extinct." Eliot (ca. 1604-90) was a Puritan minister in Roxbury, Massachusetts, who, beginning at age 42, studied for 15 years the Narragansett, or Massachusett, dialect of Algonquin used by the Indian tribes in his vicinity. He worked for an additional eight years on his translation. Printing was begun in 1660 with equipment and supplies shipped from England by the Corporation for the Promoting and Propagation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in New England. The New Testament appeared in 1661, and the entire Bible in 1663. A descendant of the Plymouth colonist for whom he was named, the author of the essay here, John Eliot Alden (1914-91) had a distinguished career as a librarian and bibliographer, culminating in the production of "European Americana: a chronological guide to works printed in Europe relating to the Americas, 1493-1776," designed to be the successor to Sabin.. 210 x 180 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/4"). 2 p.l., 10 pp., [1] leaf. ONE OF 87 COPIES printed and bound by the Stinehour Press. Publisher's blue cloth, flat spine with silver lettering. In the original sheer blue dust jacket and blue cloth slipcase.WITH A LEAF FROM ELIOT'S INDIAN BIBLE mounted on a stub following the title page. The book in as-new condition, the leaf with a little smudging to margin on verso, otherwise clean and fresh. This very attractive little leaf book contains a desirable leaf from Eliot's Indian Bible, the first Bible printed in America, along with a brief essay on its significance.         Portraits of the 70s

New York, NY: Random House, 1979. Limited Edition. Original cloth, original slipcase. Fine. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 200 COPIES of Warhol's compilation of prominent celebrities, socialites, and cultural leaders of the 1970s, including Liza Minnelli, Truman Capote, Mick Jagger, Yves Saint Laurent, and David Hockney. In 1979, for the second time in a decade, the Whitney Museum of American Art had mounted a major exhibition devoted to the work of Andy Warhol. Warhol's work this time markedly contrasted with his iconic creations of the 1960s: "there [was] this major difference: whereas the earlier work was very neat and precise in execution (the Brillo box had, after all, to look like a Brillo box), the new work [had] a very slapdash look. This, as they say, [was] no accident. In the 60's it was important for artists of the Pop school not to appear to have any affinity with Abstract Expressionism, but in the 70's - such [were] the vicissitudes of taste-it was O.K. again for paintings to look smeary and 'unfinished'..." (New York Times). "With Warhol's gallery of contemporary faces, the decade of 1970s high society is instantly captured. In this glittering realm, light and shadow are bleached out by the high wattage of spotlights; colors seem selected from the likes of Baskin-Robbins; and brushstrokes offer an extravagant, upper-income virtuosity which appears to be quoting, for conspicuous consumption, a bravura tradition that extends from Hals through de Kooning" (Robert Rosenblum). "By accepting the photograph directly into the domain of pictorial art, not as an external memory prop for the handmade re-creation of reality but as the actual base for the image on canvas, Warhol was able to grasp instantly a whole new visual and moral network of modern life that tells us not only about the way we can switch from artificial color to artificial black-and-white on our TV sets but also about the way we could switch just as quickly from a movie commercial to footage of the Vietnam war. For Warhol, the journalistic medium of photography, already a counterfeit experience of the world out there is doubly counterfeit in its translation to the realm of art" (Robert Rosenblum). This limited edition includes a collection of 112 color illustrations and a catalogue essay by the renowned art critic Robert Rosenblum, who describes Warhol's portraits as "capturing an incredible range of psychological insights among his sitters." Signed in marker by Warhol on the colophon. New York: Random House, 1979. Quarto (8.5x9.5x1 inches), original cloth, original pictorial slipcase. Book with abrasions and light wear to corners of box, otherwise fine. RARE. Note: Housed in stunning custom decorated morocco box by noted book designer Sjoerd Hofstra.
