Apophthegmatum libri octo cum primis frugiferi, denuò vigilanter ab ipos recogniti autore, non sine lucro novae accessionis.Cologne, Johann Gymnich I, 1538. 8vo (16 x 11 x 4.5 cm). With Gymnich's woodcut device, 9 woodcut initials (2 series) plus 1 repeat, and a vine-leaf ornament. Set in an Aldine-style italic with incidental roman and Greek. Near contemporary blind-tooled calf (the owner's stamp ca. 1564?, added later than the rest of the tooling) over wooden boards, each board in a panel design, the front board with the large oval armorial panel-stamp (72 x 55 mm) of Simon Cluver of Gedansk (ca. 1540-1598); the back board with 2 rolls showing Christian imagery. With 1 of 2 brass catchplates but further with only remnants of the fastenings.

Rotterdam City Library, Cat. Erasmus Collection, p. 22; USTC 635471 (4 copies); VD16, E2039 (same 4 copies); for owner's stamp on binding: Hulshoff Pol, The first century of Leiden University Library (1975), p. 414. Rare second(?) edition of the revised and expanded text of Erasmus's important and popular collection of more than two thousand aphorisms, apothegms and anecdotes, in the original Latin, first published by Froben at Basel in 1531 in six "libri" but finding its definitive form in his 1535 edition in eight "libri". Gymnich, with the present edition, appears to be the first after Froben to publish the revised 1535 text. The book is a collection of short quotations from a wide variety of sources, intended to be both educational and entertaining. With the large armorial owner's stamp of Simon Clüver (ca. 1540-1598), some of whose books went to Leiden University via his grand nephew, the historical geographer Philipp Clüver (1580-1622). Hulshoff Pol records this stamp on a binding dated 1564, but in the present binding it has been stamped over the existing decoration on the front board, so the binding itself may be older than the owner's stamp. With numerous small stains in the preliminaries, some mostly marginal water stains and a few small marginal worm holes, but otherwise in good condition and only slightly trimmed, retaining an occasional deckle. The owner's stamp has been impressed quite deeply and has therefore been well preserved, but the rest of the binding is worn, with some cuts, tears and gaps, and the surface of the spine flaking. One of the earliest editions of one of Erasmus's most popular and most entertaining works, in a near contemporary, blind-tooled binding.

The Sacred Scrolls of the Southern Ojibway

University of Toronto Press / Glenbow-Alberta Institute, 1975. x, 199 pp. Includes reference list, key to sources, extensive directory of birchbark scrolls and charts, and index. Oblong 7" x 10". Extensively illustrated with black and white photo reproductions, diagrams and scroll fascimiles. "Provides a previously unavailable chart of the emergence, development, and decline of a unique religious nexus known as the Midewewin, an untranslatable Ojibway word inadequately rendered in English as the 'Grand Medicine Society.' The Mide cult was introduced by a young visionary late in the eighteenth century, and later spread from Lake Superior as far as Lake Winnipeg. Examines over a hundred Mide scrolls and relates them to the mainstream of the oral tradition as preserved in Ojibway literature. In tracing the history of this fascinating cult, the author also provides perspectives on Ojibway identity and on the rise and fall of Ojibway civilization." - from dust jacket. Somewhat above-average wear and soiling to illustrated cream-coloured dust jacket, now preserved in archival-grade Brodart. Moderate wear to book. Binding tight. Prior owner's signature atop half-title page, otherwise contents clean and unmarked. A sound copy of this wonderful reference.

        Manuscript maquette for Creepy Castle.

London: Macmillan, , 1975. Together with a smaller manuscript book proposal and the US first edition. 2 pen and watercolour manuscripts, 1 oblong octavo (190 x 140 mm) and 1 square octavo (135 x 126 mm). Volume I: loose gatherings with illustrated wrappers, 15 double page drawings (368 x 134 mm), of which all but one feature a flap which changes the scene, and 2 single page drawings (182 x 134 mm). Volume II: bound with illustrated self-wrappers, 4 double page drawings (253 x 134 mm), one of which features 3 flaps that change the scene. Together with a copy of the US first edition of the completed book in the original pink boards and pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, a few small nicks and light creases to wrappers of Volume I. An excellent set with bright and crisp watercolour drawings. The original manuscript maquette of Goodall's wordless picture book, Creepy Castle, which would be published in 1975 by Macmillan in London and Atheneum in New York. While the published book conveys Goodall (1908–1996)'s inventive approach to the picture book format, it fails to fully transmit the delicate lines and colouring of the artist's lively illustrations, as evident in the current manuscript.

How to Have a Life-style. Illustrations by William Vaughan.

London: Cecil Woolf, 1975 - Small octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Ownership annotation to dust jacket rear flap verso. Spine gently rolled, light offsetting to endpapers; an excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket with toned spine, and nicks and creasing to extremities, tape repair to verso. Illustrations by William Vaughan. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Kenith, from Quentin Crisp". This copy additionally with a signed newspaper clipping from John Bull dated 20 November 1948 tipped-in to the front pastedown, and a signed typescript letter dated 2 January 1976 tipped-in to the rear pastedown. The letter is a response to a Mr Goodfellow, whom Crisp appears to have known in earlier years, replying to a letter congratulating Crisp on the 1975 television film production of The Naked Civil Servant, Crisp's 1968 autobiography, starring John Hurt. In the letter Crisp discusses "Miss Beeson" and the "turbulance" she carried with her, noting that, "she really was a horror". Miss Beeson lived on the same floor as Crisp at Beaufort Street and "her insatiable sexual appetite would often wake her neighbours during the night . sometime later Miss Beeson got religion and would lecture Quentin on his sinful life". The newspaper clipping provides an early interview with Crisp, discussing his job as a male model; "I like being a model best, it's working without having to do any work at all. It's scandalous without being dangerous". Nigel Kelly, Quentin Crisp: The Profession of Being. A Biography, p. 58. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
