Deux croquis originaux : la Fontaine de Mercure

1975 - - 1975, 21x29,7cm, 2 feuilles. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Two original pencil sketches by Alexander Calder. Two handwritten mentions at the head of each leaflet, one in the ballpoint pen of an unidentified editor ("Mercury fountain by Calder Saché 1975 may") and the other in pencil in the hand of Calder: "Therese Herdek Switzerland " . In 1937, Calder was commissioned by the Spanish government, in struggle against the Francoist insurrection, to make a modern sculpture to present at the Paris World Fair. He is thus the only non-Hispanic artist to exhibit in the Pavilion of Spain. He then imagines his Fountain of Mercury, a tribute to the miners of Almadén who resist the siege held by Franco's troops. The mines then supplied 60% of the global mercury and this sculpture is a strong political act of opposition to fascism. The construction of this monumental sculpture required 5,000 kilos of liquid mercury, which were transported from the mines to Paris. The work consists of a perpetual fountain of mercury surmounted by a mobile with two pendants: one is a red circle and the other is made of the name of "Almadén"; at the foot of the basin is inscribed "Spanish Mercury Almadén". During the exhibition, the fountain was exhibited alongside Picasso's Guernica and Miró's Reaper . Calder offered the sculpture to the Joan Miró Foundation in 1975, moved by the close friendship that united him to the painter. These two precious sketches were made during the movement of the work and its installation to the foundation. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

William Burroughs in front of Exec. Hdqtrs, Burroughs Corp., NYC

New York, 1975. Large format gelatin silver print (45 x 29 cm.), matted in aluminum frame (63.x 48 cm.). With photographer's embossed stamp at bottom right margin of print. On verso: signed, dated, and titled by Malanga; hand-numbered as print number 4 of 10. For the author of The soft machine, and one of the typewriter's most legendary lovers, it's hard not to imagine the shadow of the family business looming large. The Burroughs Corporation was originally founded in 1886 as the American Arithmometer Company, mostly designing adding machines for businesses. Burroughs the Corporation would eventually embrace twentieth century computing, before merging with Sperry UNIVAC to form the pioneering UNISYS. Hence the URL: burroughs.com. And thus the brilliance of Gerard Malanga's 1975 large-scale portrait of a then-elderly William S. in front of the Corporation's executive headquarters; the language of analogue versus digital. Burroughs is rumoured to have been contracturally obligated to avoid any association with the Corporation, making this photo a royal bird-flip.

        Salem's Lot [Inscribed Association Copy]

Doubleday, Garden City 1975 - A later printing of his second novel, with the Q41 code on page 439. Inscribed by King in 1980 to the horror writer Stanley Wiater: "For Stanley - With good wishes and much respect. Keep writing; you're good, and will crack through. Best, Stephen King 11/1/80." Earlier in the year King had picked a story by Wiater as the winner of a Boston Phoenix short story contest (see below). As a writer, editor, interviewer and anthologist, Wiater has won the Horror Writers of America's Bram Stoker Award three times. Wiater's Gahan Wilson-designed bookplate on the front pastedown, the only bookplate Wilson ever designed; foxing to edges of text block; near fine in a very good, third issue ($7.95, "Father Callahan") dust jacket with shallow wear to the spine extremities. A nice association copy of an early edition of an early King novel. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Ordner enth.). Weiterhin sind etliche Aufnahmen eigener Erzeugnisse enthalten.

        The Vermont Notebook.

Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press,, 1975. Octavo. Original patterned cloth backed boards, title label to spine, white paper over boards with title and illustration to front, brown endpapers. With the original acetate wrapper. 47 full page black and white illustrations by Brainard. With an original Brainard pen-and-ink drawing, signed "Brainard - 74", bound in as issued. A fine copy, with the acetate wrapper chipped at the head. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Ashbery to his friend the artist R. B. Kitaj (1932-2007), of number B of 26 lettered copies signed by Ashbery and Brainard, bound by Earle Gray, and with an original signed ink drawing by Brainard (dated 1974) bound in. There were also 250 copies signed by Ashbery and Brainard, also hardbound by not so attractively by Earle Gray, and without the original drawing. The inscription on the half-title, "for R. B. Kitaj, love, John Ashbery, London, April 18 1975" is in the year of publication. Kitaj and Ashbery were close friends and collaborators: Kitaj had painted the work used as the cover for Ashbery's Housboat Days (1957), and Ashbery published laudatory criticisms of Kitaj's work, culminating in Thames & Hudson's 1983 publication Kitaj: Paintings, Drawings, Pastels, authored by Ashbery. Ashbery's Pulitzer prize-winning poem "Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror" (inspired by Parmigiano and written in 1974) was in 1984 issued by the Arion Press in tribute to Ashbery, with illustrations by a small selection of his artist friends including Kitaj. He later executed an etched portrait of Ashbery in 1997. Artist Joe Brainard was an artist of the New York school and notable for his collaborations with its poets. His memoir I Remember (1970) is a cult classic, praised by Paul Auster as "one of the few totally original books I have ever read.
