Paris, Imprimerie Nationale, An III [1795]. 111 p.

THE WIZARD OF OP

New York: Little, Brown & Co., 1975. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Square 8vo. White cloth with stamped illustration in pictorial dust jacket. Near fine in a very good DJ. INSCRIBED by Emberley on copyright page: "For Chris & Steve. Ed Emberly 1976" with drawing of two rats underneath, captioned "First Edition." Additionally includes, taped in, an original drawing on sketch paper by Emberley resembling the front cover of the book: a circle with its title and two figures underneath. Another gift inscription from an unknown person is on the opposite page, explaining: "We asked Ed to draw you a wedding / cake – the above illustration is special / as it was a reject illustration for the / jacket and it was part of the Lee Walp Family Juvenile Collection [at the University of Michigan]. To / our favorite Bostonian book friends. / Lee / [illegible]." Lastly, the book includes a postcard and bookmark, likely as issued. Jacket shows moderate edgewear and small chips. Pages clean and unmarred throughout. Unpaginated. An interesting and unique copy of this lovely op-art children's book, telling the story of a "slightly inept wizard" who "casts his spells which are demonstrated to us through the techniques of optical art." An early work from the prolific children's book illustrator.

        Virginia Woolf.

[c.1975]. Original artwork in pen-and-ink and watercolour (29 × 41 cm). Presented in limed wax ash frame, with conservation glass and museum mount (framed size 46 × 56.5 cm). In fine condition. Original portrait of Virginia Woolf, titled and signed by the artist lower right in pencil. It features Woolf reclining in a wicker chair, with her cocker spaniel, Pinka, at her feet. The artist, Richard Pitt Kennedy (1910–1989), was apprenticed to Leonard Woolf at the embryonic Hogarth Press in the 1920s, starting at the age of 16 after he left school without completing his education. Kennedy was fired after five years at the Press when he "unwittingly" instructed the wrong size of paper to be cut for the Uniform Edition of Virginia Woolf's works. Kennedy writes in his memoir, "LW says I can't be trusted to do anything but wrap up parcels and that I am the most frightful idiot he has ever had the privilege of meeting in a long career of suffering fools" (2011, p. 82). Following his dismissal, he went on to enroll in a journalism course at University College, London (the usual qualifications were waived owing to his experience at the Hogarth Press). His illustrated memoir, A Boy at the Hogarth Press, was published in 1972.

        The Catcher in the Rye

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1975. Later printing. [6], 277 pp. 8vo. Publisher's black cloth, dust jacket. Creasing to five or six pages, some minor soiling to back flap of jacket, near fine. Later printing. [6], 277 pp. 8vo. Inscribed. Inscribed to the daughter of a friend from Salinger's days at the New Yorker, on the occasion of her graduation from high school. "Dear Mary, My very dear and inveterate friend and comrade, your loving Aunt Joyce, gamest and fairest of passengers in post-war Buicks that used to cruise through White Plains on hot summer nights, tells me you're a marvelous girl, and I'd like you to know that I most ardently join with her in wishing you, first, a happy graduation day, and, next, a gorgeously peaceful, blissful, useful life, on whatever terms suit you down to the ground. Most sincerely, J.D. Salinger. Cornish N.H. June 13, 1976." "Aunt Joyce" refers to Joyce Miller, a staff writer for the New Yorker in the late 1940s and 1950s when Salinger was breaking onto the literary scene by publishing stories in that magazine while simultaneously working on Catcher in the Rye. The two developed a close friendship in the spring of 1950, then corresponded sporadically over the years. That the famously reclusive Salinger agreed to inscribe this copy for Miller's niece, and the warmth and candor of the inscription itself, testifies to Salinger's enduring affection for his former comrade Miller. Laid in to the book is a typed version of the inscription which Salinger sent to Joyce Miller for approval, to which the latter has made three corrections, which Salinger incorporated into the inscription as it appears in the book. Inscribed copies of The Catcher in the Rye are scarce on the market; our search of auction records turns up only six in the last 50 plus years.
