Kesey's Garage Sale Signed twice by author + by Paul Krassner, Ken Babbs, Hugh Romney & Stewart Brand

New York: Viking(1973). Package of both the 1st editions/1st printings of the hardback in dustjacket and soft-bound book; they were published simultaneously by Viking in 1973. The paperback is unread and in Fine condition. It has the same wraps design as the hardback's dustjacket, and the same text content. The Near Fine hardback first edition book is bound in blue cloth over boards with a blue paper spine panel, and the binding has white spine printing and a white design on the lower front board. The paper portion on the spine has light sunning to the edges and a couple of tiny scratches to the spine printing. The hardback's dustjacket has 1 very short completely closed, with no material loss, edge tear - still Fine condition - crisp, clean, unfaded, price intact. It (the hardback) is SIGNED twice on the half title page by Ken Kesey - first in a bold orange ink signed and inscribed "For Rick: Wot a long strange trip it still is, Ken Kesey 1984," and again in gold ink with just his signature, dated 1991. The hardback is also signed by 3 others important in Kesey's life on the half title page - Paul Krassner (co-founder in 1968 of the Yippies, Merry Prankster), Ken Babbs, dated 1994 (Ken Kesey's close friend and right-hand man - they were inseparable, Merry Prankster), and Hugh Romney (with maze-like doodle; he is the founder of the commune The Hog Farm, commonly known as Wavy Gravy). It is also signed on the next page by Stewart Brand, dated 15 Oct 90 (Merry Prankster, developer of the Whole Earth Catalog, old friend of Ken Kesey, and a futurist). The book contains "Who Flew Over What?," an essay about Kesey writing One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with Kesey's drawings of its characters, plus "Over the Border," a screenplay for the mind written in collaboration with Kesey's Merry Prankster friends in 1965-66, plus miscellaneous uncollected writings and interviews. Contributors include Arthur Miller (Introduction), Paul Foster, Kathi Wagner, Ken Babbs, Paul Krassner (twice), Ron Bevirt and the Whole Earth Catalog crew, Neal Cassady, Allen Ginsberg, Hugh Romney, and Laurence Gonzales. Both books have 238 pages. The soft-bound copy is 10-7/8" x 8-3/8", slightly smaller than the hardback's 11-1/8" x 8-7/8".What a great collection of signatures of people prominent during the hippie era! (Note that the soft-bound book has a different SBN: 670003468.) ; 11-1/8" x 8-7/8"; 238 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 13, 80, NF/F, 670412686

         [Photographs]: Motorcycle Racing Photographs (1958-1973)

Philadelphia and others, 1973. Near Fine. A collection of approximately 280 snapshots (and about 10 additional small contact proofs) of motorcycles, motorcycle racing, and midget car racing. Various sizes, mostly a variation on 4.25" x 3", with some both smaller and larger; both black and white and color. A good percentage are captioned on the rear with places and some name, and many have either handwritten or stamped dates. Most are dated between 1958-1963, a few with later dates (the latest in 1973). The photos are centered around the business and motorcycle racing career of Ed LaBelle (1928-2010) who owned a motorcycle shop, Ed LaBelle Cycle Sales, in Philadelphia. Born in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania, and after service in WWII, he was a professional motorcycle racer, the three-time winner of the Canadian national championship, and held a world record in England, while simultaneously designing, customizing, and selling bikes. Most of the images show bike races and rallies including several identified in Canada, Laconia, Daytona, the Langhorne Scramble, and Atsion, New Jersey, sometimes with details of the bikes, the other riders, and how LaBelle fared in the race. A very few seem like they might have been taken in England or Europe. The images are unusually focused on bikes and racing, and except for a modest amount of images of midget race cars and contemporary sports cars, which LaBelle also apparently raced and designed, are almost entirely devoted to bikers and bike racing.A wonderfully chronology and subject specific accumulation of images.

         North Portal Book Dummy

[Chicago: Barbara Crane & Paul Vanderbilt, c. 1973]. Light wear as befits a working maquette, but in exemplary condition overall. Housed in a custom clamshell box.. Unique maquette for an unrealized photobook. Oblong folio on brown shopping bag paper stock. Title written in pencil. Approximately 145 4 x 5 inch contact silver prints by Barbara Crane, sequenced by noted photography educator and curator Paul Vanderbilt; also with a photocopy of an 8 page typed letter by Vanderbilt addressed to Crane, dated January, 1978. Together, the maquette and the letter form an alternative vision of approaching Crane's "People of the North Portal" series of photographs. Among Crane's earliest work, the series captured portraits of people as they exited the north portal entrance of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. An intriguing interpretation of an important body of photographic work.

         People of the North Portal

[Chicago: Barbara Crane, 1973]. Near fine in hand-stenciled wrappers, housed in a custom built clamshell box.. Unique maquette for an unrealized photobook. Quarto. Contains 35 original velox prints, either bound in or pasted to the pages along with drawn notations showing potential text layout. The mockup for the colophon page credits text to Paul Vanderbilt. People of the North Portal, amongst Barbara Crane's earliest projects, captured portraits of people as they exited the north portal entrance of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. At once conceptual and humanistic, these candid images, seemingly all taken from one fixed point, communicate both the mechanical register of a public building while also capturing personal and private moments. Crane studied with Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design, and is Professor Emeritus in photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist's work has been widely collected and can be found in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; the Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the High Museum, Atlanta; and the Bibliothéque Nationale, among others.

Lune Enchantée: Une Imagerie Racontée et Dessinée d'après le Conte de Charles Perrault, La Belle au Bois Dormant

Paris: Adrien Maeght, 1973. First edition of this pictorial retelling of Sleeping Beauty, produced in the wake of the first moon landing, and set in outer space. Originally a designer of corporate logos and trademarks, the Swiss artist Warja Lavater had a genius for the right symbol. In the late 1950s, she began to translate classic fairy tales into visual language, using minimalist graphic codes and keys. Like her contemporary Bruno Munari, Lavater combined the conventions of the picture book with the ideal of the "book-object" to create a playful new kind of artist's book. The folding leporello format appealed to her as a medium, she explained, because it could "be transformed into sculpture, standing on the ground, or hung, unfolded, on the wall." The first of Lavater's folding "imageries" was William Tell, published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1962. Paris publisher Adrien Maeght issued a series of her symbolic fairy tales in the years to come, including Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, 1965), Cinderella (Cendrillon, 1974), Snow White (Blanche Neige, 1974), and a smaller separate treatment of Sleeping Beauty (La Belle au Bois Dormant, 1974). This early galactic interpretation of Sleeping Beauty, bound with a hook for hanging, is unusual not only in its much larger size, but also in its incorporation of text into the visual narrative. The characters are represented by vibrantly colored symbols of the space age, with the princess as the sleeping moon in orbit, awaiting her rocketship prince. A fine copy. Single one-sided color lithographed pictorial sheet folded leporello-style, measuring 12 inches high x 73 inches long, original blue cloth spine and rear board, front board covered in color lithographed pictorial paper, front pastedown printed as title page, metal hook anchored on cloth below title for hanging. A few faint marks to front board.

Snapshot Archive of Small Town American Auto Racing

Circa 1973-1995. Photographs are uniformly near fine with some notations to verso; organized into 97 packets.. Archive of 418 original snapshots, 5 x 3 1/2 inches, many with notations to verso, documenting 97 racetracks, primarily in the American Midwest, but also stretching from New York State to California. The photographer, one George A. Koyt (1938-2010), apparently spent over twenty years traveling cross-country to myriad small-town racetracks, especially in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, where 50 of the tracks pictured were located. The unifying aesthetic of the archive is typological strategy; at each track, Koyt photographed the signage, and in the process, created a directory of American Midwestern vernacular graphic design. The photographs have been organized around the signage into packets, some with a single photo, others with up to a dozen additional photographs documenting various aspects of the racetrack, such as crowds and the actual races. Altogether, the archive captures both a homespun graphic language as well as recording a uniquely American popular culture of stock-car and sprint-car racing.
