THE HUMAN HEART (1-7); No. 817

Kowloon, Hong Kong: Christian Witness Press, (n. d.). C. 1970s. Attached at the top-edge with maroon tape. A very good set, still very bright, with some minor occasional tears/creases and a faint spot of foxing here and there; overall a VG+ set.. Seven broadsides printed in color. 30-1/4" x 21" These posters were said to bring the viewer closer to God, when viewed in sequence they evoke a striking allegory. Five of the posters depict a man's face with a different countanence affected by the large heart beneath him. The characters actions in the heart or outside of it, reflect the presence or absence of the seven deadly sins from his heart. Two of the posters illustrate a fairly straightforward scene of a family in a bedroom, one scene is sinful, the other prayerful, lending meaning to the reprocutions of the spiritual state of the human heart on a man's family, and especially his ability to sleep restfully. A mystifying set of posters, ripe with Christian symbolism.

INSOMNIA, OR THE DEVIL AT LARGE

Loujon Press, Albuquerque 1970 - Folio. Quarto spiralbound book in foil wrapper and twelve lithographed broadside reproductions of watercolors, plus frontis and special colophon/title leaf, enclosed in publisher's folding cloth clamshell box. Fine. First edition, special issue (distributed ca. 1971). This present copy is one of twenty copies specially cased and distributed as a memorial fund-raiser for the publisher. It includes a frontispiece portrait of Henry Miller by Paul Giovanopoulos not included in the regular issues (1/30 numbered and signed in pencil by the artist in the margin), along with a manuscript note by Mrs. Jon Webb, and a specially printed title leaf for the portfolio (not noted by the bibliographers, who oddly denote this a second "edition," which it is not). Although not called for, each of the plates of watercolors by Miller is signed by him in the margin (generally near the facsimile signature), in ink, rather than pencil, as was the case with the more exclusive regular issues. This rather awkward production was ill-starred from its initial conception, when an edition of 999 copies was envisioned; reality soon sunk in, and the edition was reduced to 699 copies. In the end, only three hundred of the original wood cases were completed, and some of the more lavish deluxe issues - A through F - were issued in far smaller numbers than intended. A portion of the edition was then offered as the "Economy" issue, without the wooden case, but with the reproductions. Apart from the original issue 'A' (12 copies with an original watercolor by Miller), this is the most limited of the distributed issues, and the clamshell box is far preferable to the wood slide-case (with the famous photo of Miller astride a toilet) that accompanied a portion of the other issues. Extra postage. S&J A175k.

THE GULF BRIDGED (1-5); No. 813

Kowloon, Hong Kong: Christian Witness Press, (n. d.). C. 1970s. Attached at the top-edge with maroon tape. A very good set, still very bright, with some minor occasional tears/creases and a faint spot of foxing here and there; overall a VG+ set.. Five broadsides printed in color. 30-1/4" x 21" These posters were said to bring the viewer closer to God. The images progress much like a graphic novel, beginning with two figures at the edge of a cliff, on the other side is paradise and at the bottom of the divide is a pit of flames. The male figure tries to build a wooden bridge but it fails and falls into the pit. After he glimpses a heavenly vision of the baby Jesus, a red cross springs from the flames to bridge the divide into Paradise. Viewed in sequence they evoke a striking allegory for reaching paradise by accepting Christ into your heart.

        Andy Warhol

1970 - In this major reassessment, young art historian Rainer Crone redefines Warhol's position in the current scene, avoiding such overworked classifications as 'pop' and 'anti-art,' and analyzes his works as personal visions of reality . Crone's incisive critical comments are supplemented by the most comprehensive catalogue of Warhol's works ever attempted: 650 paintings, prints, and objects are fully documented, identified by title, subject, size, and, often, by color. More than 325 illustrations, in color and black-and-white, provide an exhaustive visual record of the Warhol output; a filmography and an extensive bibliography of over 600 entries, including interviews with Warhol and his major exhibitions, furnish a nucleus of reference material that will be invaluable to students, scholars, and critics, as well as to more casual observers of the art scene.
