Jackie Robinson says a talk radio host “needs to do a lot of soul searching.”

1968. No binding. Fine. Autograph Letter Signed, to Jon Anthony Dosa, ca. 1968-1969. Written on letterhead of St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco. 2 pp., 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 in. ""He needs to do a lot of soul searching for he is the kind of guy we fear. His opportunity to spread his views and his cleverness will continue to be a stumbling block before we reach peace here at home."" Robinson writes to producer Jon Anthony Dosa after appearing on the controversial ""Joe Dolan Show,"" on KNEW-Talk Radio in Oakland, California, in 1968 or 1969. Robinson clearly did not like Dolan's attitude or line of questioning. In a later memoir, Dosa wrote, ""[Robinson] wasn't happy with the tough questions that interviewer Joe Dolan posed to him. I later sent him a bottle of champagne and received a very kind and impassioned letter from him.""[1] This is that letter.Complete TranscriptDear John- Thanks for the champagne. It was nice of you to send some. While I enjoyed being on the program I was surprised to find out what some people think and feel. I was especially surprised to find the attitude of Joe Dolan. He needs to do a lot of soul searching for he is the kind of guy we fear. His opportunity to spread his views and his cleverness will continue to be a stumbling block before we reach peace here at home. It was obvious from the start <2> he expected me to agree with what he believes. Obviously he does not agree with me and I knew we would clash soon after the show started. Not expecting it before I was surprised. Continued good luck thanks again. Sincerely Jackie RobinsonHistorical BackgroundJackie Robinson, who had served in the army during World War II, supported U.S. involvement in Vietnam. On May 13, 1967, in an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr., Robinson criticized Muhammad Ali for his refusal to be drafted, ""There is another point upon which I am confused, Martin. That is your praise of Cassius Clay. I admire this man as a fighting champion and a man who speaks his mind.... What values to do you have in mind when you praise him and say he has given up so much?... I am confused because I respect you deeply. But I also love this imperfect country.""[2] Most black soldiers serving in Vietnam agreed with Robinson's criticism of Ali. Conflict between the Civil Rights Movement and the anti-war movement were of course highlighted by people who were hostile to both.Jon Anthony Dosa (b. 1941) was born in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from San Jose State University. He was a systems analyst for a title insurance company in San Francisco before his opposition to the Vietnam War led him in 1968 to a position as producer of the ""Joe Dolan Show"" on local radio and two shows on local television stations. In 1980, he moved to Los Angeles to become a program coordinator for KABC talk radio, where he produced locally and nationally syndicated talk shows until his retirement.Joseph A. Dolan (b. 1921) graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Law School (1954). He served as a fighter pilot in the Air Corps and Air Force from at least 1943 to 1955. In 1944, he received a Distinguished Flying Cross. In 1965, a television executive heard him debate the Vietnam War at the Lost Angeles Press Club and invited him to audition for a talk show. He moved to San Francisco and hosted a controversial talk show on KNEW in Oakland from 1966 to 1969 and a television show around the same time. As a radio personality who relished controversy, Dolan had several guests who advanced conspiracy theories regarding the assassination of John F. Kennedy. When a vandal cut a cable linking the radio station to its transmitter in January 1967, some thought anger at the ""Joe Dolan Show"" might have been the cause. Dolan was fired from one station for speaking out against U.S. involvement in Vietnam. After becoming bored with celebrity life, and passing the California bar in 1971, he opened a law practice in Pomona.Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) was born in Georgia and when his fat...       Atheneum, New York 1968 - Inscribed by Jack Kerouac for his brother in law, John Sampas: "Happy Birthday to my Brother-in-law John | Jack Kerouac." With a signed letter of provenance from Jeffrey Weinberg (bookseller), dated 1983, where he states that this copy of A Sense of Dark was given to Kerouac by the publisher's agent for a possible review. John, brother to Stella, Kerouac's third wife, became the executor of the Kerouac estate after Stella and Jan's deaths in the 90s. An interesting association copy. Book presents just about Fine overall in a Very Good+ dust jacket with some wear at chipping at the spine ends and slight bend at the top of the front panel. William McIenly writing under the pseudonym of William Malliol used his writing as an outlet for his pain and PTSD, after his war experiences in Korea. "By his estimates he had killed more than 100 enemy soldiers?with a samurai sword?it was the love of a young woman and four years at Oxford University that changed William and helped him see the futility of his violence" (Zerega). A Sense of Dark graphically and honestly sets out the experiences of a soldier not so unlike Malliol himself. Such a book would have added fuel to Kerouac's own anti-war sentiments, as the Vietnam War continued into its second decade. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket.         THE COLD SPRING & OTHER POEMS

New Directions, [ Norfolk] 1968 - Paper over boards, printed spine label. Fine in dust jacket. First edition. From a total edition of one hundred press numbered copies printed by Carolyn Hammer in Emerson type on Shogun paper and signed by the author, this is one of an unknown number of copies with the variant setting of the title-page and the limitation page (with one very minor difference) which Wilson denotes as the "deluxe edition," but with endsheets and binding identical to that appearing on the ordinary copies. This is copy #14 and bears the ownership signature of poet/printer/publisher Walter Hamady. All of the copies we have previously had with these variant settings have been numbered ten or lower. As the publisher asserted that there was no "deluxe edition," it would seem likely that the variations are a consequence only of stop-press alterations by the printer and were not intended as a mark of distinction between "editions."         Plan of Surrey Commercial Docks, 1968.

Cook & Hammond, London, 1968 - The Surrey docks Lithographed map, extensively annotated in red and pink ink, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original blue covers, title and "Estate Officer" in silver. There were docks on the site of the Surrey Commercial Docks for over three centuries. It was particularly popular in the eighteenth century for traders from the Arctic and Eastern Europe, reflected in the names of some of the docks: Greenland Dock, Norway Dock, and Russia Dock. A combination of serious damage from bombing during the Second World War and a move to container shipping forced the docks to close in 1969. The area has now been redeveloped and is known as Surrey Quays. This copy was owned by the Estate Officer for the docks, and is extensively annotated, with red and pink lines denoting docks that had been filled in or land sold, along with the dates. The Port of London Authority was formed in 1909. It was prompted by a series of industrial actions by dock workers, including their demand for the 'Docker's Tanner', a wage of 6d. an hour, in 1889. The Port was a vital part of the British economy: refining and processing industries grew up around goods brought in to the docks and it was the centre of British shipbuilding and repair. The PLA continues to supervise and manage the Port of London, the docks, and the London stretch of the River Thames. This map was issued from the former PLA headquarters in Trinity Square.

The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA.

New York: Atheneum, 1968. First edition, sixth printing, published a few months after the first of the Watson's ground-breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by James D. Watson on the title page. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and tears. Jacket design by Jeanyee Wong. Foreword by Sir Lawrence Bragg. "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.

Robinson writes to producer Jon Anthony Dosa after appearing on the controversial "Joe Dolan Show," on KNEW-Talk Radio in Oakland, California, in 1968 or 1969. Robinson clearly did not like Dolan's attitude or line of questioning. In a later memoir, Dosa wrote, "[Robinson] wasn't happy with the tough questions that interviewer Joe Dolan posed to him. I later sent him a bottle of champagne and received a very kind and impassioned letter from him."[1] This is that letter.Complete TranscriptDear John- Thanks for the champagne. It was obvious from the start he expected me to agree with what he believes. On May 13, 1967, in an open letter to Martin Luther King Jr., Robinson criticized Muhammad Ali for his refusal to be drafted, "There is another point upon which I am confused, Martin. That is your praise of Cassius Clay. I admire this man as a fighting champion and a man who speaks his mind. What values to do you have in mind when you praise him and say he has given up so much? I am confused because I respect you deeply. But I also love this imperfect country."[2] Most black soldiers serving in Vietnam agreed with Robinson's criticism of Ali. Conflict between the Civil Rights Movement and the anti-war movement were of course highlighted by people who were hostile to both.Jon Anthony Dosa (b. 1941) was born in Akron, Ohio, and graduated from San Jose State University. He was a systems analyst for a title insurance company in San Francisco before his opposition to the Vietnam War led him in 1968 to a position as producer of the "Joe Dolan Show" on local radio and two shows on local television stations. Kennedy. When a vandal cut a cable linking the radio station to its transmitter in January 1967, some thought anger at the "Joe Dolan Show" might have been the cause. Dolan was fired from one station for speaking out against U.S. involvement in Vietnam. After becoming bored with celebrity life, and passing the California bar in 1971, he opened a law practice in Pomona.Jackie Robinson (1919-1972) was born in Georgia and when his fat.
