         Freak's Literary Tertiary

Unpag. (36 pp.) collection of mimeographed texts and drawings on various colors and stocks of paper, primarily a compilation of past issues of Hawkins' other serials, "Freak" and "The Carbuncle", topics include the derivation of the word "dike", Synanon, violence on television, media, politics, and letters to the editor. Illustrated. Oblong 4to. Orig. wrpps., stapled and tape-bound. Some very minor toning and soiling. San Francisco (Ahab Press of Jackson Square West) 1964-1965. Tom Hawkins moved to San Francisco in the 1960s to join the Beat Poets, and began self-publishing after his work was rejected by local Beat publications. After he retired as a poet and writer, Hawkins and his wife moved to Fort Bragg, where they lived in poverty for most of the 1980s. Hawkins engaged in petty scams and thefts, and used various disguises. In 1988 he murdered his wife, and several days later set fire to their home and drove himself off of a cliff. Hawkins was unmasked as the author of the Wanda Tinasky letters, a group of comic and playful letters sent to the Mendocino Commentary and the Anderson Valley Advertiser in the 1980's, ostensibly by a bag lady named Wanda Tinasky who lived under a bridge in Mendocino County. Many speculated that the letters were actually written by the novelist Thomas Pynchon, until "literary detective" Don Foster matched up biographical details, snippets of poetry, and even the actual typewriter used. As of October 2017, WorldCat locates only four holdings in North America.
