        Pnin

Garden City: Doubleday. 1957. The second printing of this short comic novel, signed by Nabokov and dated "21 Jan. 1959 Cornell Univ." With a letter of provenance laid in. Nabokov was notoriously reluctant to sign books, and the letter of provenance tells an interesting story: the purchaser of this book originally bought two copies of Lolita to have Nabokov sign, and Nabokov told him that he had an agreement with his publisher not to sign copies of the book. As a result, he went back to the bookstore and bought two copies of Pnin (one for himself and one for his sister), and Nabokov signed and dated those instead. The commercial success of Lolita -- it had been a bestseller since its publication the previous summer -- allowed Nabokov to leave his job at Cornell. He gave his last two lectures there on January 19, two days before signing this book. Boards somewhat rubbed; near fine in a very good dust jacket with a couple of small stains at the folds, some fading to the spine lettering, and modest edge chipping. The dust jacket is Juliar's variant a, with the code above the price on the front flap. Uncommon signed, and this copy with a small footnote to literary history. Hardcover. Near Fine.

"Have Gun Will Travel." Autograph Letter Signed, on personalized printed stationery, 4to, North Hollywood, Aug. 15 n.y. but most likely 1958; with Typed Document (Contract) Signed for for "Have Gun Will Travel" theme; with "Wire Paladin" Calling Card

Herrmann composed the popular music for the TV classic, "Have Gun Will Travel," which aired from 1957-63 on CBS. The show's main character, Paladin, was a well mannered mercenary gunfighter. In our letter, Herrmann writes about music rights noting the "Have Gun Will Travel" composition purchased by CBS. "Enclose [sic] are the contracts - as follows I to VI are radio music - which C.B S owned radio rights and in 57 purchased all rights . 7 to 14 - are works of mine from my own files that I reworked for T. V. use and which C. B. S. purchased...15 - is theme written for Have Gun Will Travel...." He signs, "Bernard." The letter shows a smudged date stamped at the top near the address indicating receipt by the recipient, dated Aug. 18, 1958. The contract accompanying this letter on "CBS Television" stationery consists of 4 separate 4to pages, January 18, 1957. The contract engages Herrmann to "compose...an original musical composition, including full orchestral score...as theme music in connection with the production of a filmed television series... tentatively entitled HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL...." Herrmann signs in full on page 4 above his typed name and with initials on page 3 in the margin of a deleted paragraph. A scarce "Have Gun Will Travel Wire Paladin San Francisco" business card with the iconic knight chess piece accompanies the letter and contract. The card measures in inches 1.75 x 3.50. Condition: The letter shows browning in upper left corner possibly from a rusted paper clip, a slight browned chip at left edge and slightly larger browned chip at right edge, midway in both instances; margin folds apparent and some overall wrinkling. Contract shows rusted paper clip stains on each page and some rust around staple in upper left, otherwise in good condition. The card shows tape stains on each edge.

The Lord of the Rings, 1st US Edition, Early Printngs with Dustjackets and Variant Cloth

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1957. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Houghton Mifflin , 1957/1957/1956 1st Editions, 7th imp./5th imp./1st impressions. An exceptionally scarce and lovely set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is all original cloth with the correct original dustjackets. The dustjackets are all in Very Good Plus condition, with only The Fellowship being price clipped. The Return of the King has a closed tear to the lower rear panel and a closed tear to the rear upper spine fold area, both neatly repaired with conservation tap, with minor chips and loss to the tips of the spine and fold areas. The three dustjackets are very bright, with minor chips and loss mainly to the ends of the spine, along with occasional black marks from an old style dustjacket protector. The protector has also left some tape ghosts to the endpapers, and some lines to the dustjackets, should be apparent in the photos provided. The Fellowship has some tape to the inside, which has darkened the upper inch of the spine a bit, but still has helped stop and further loss to the spine. This set is very scarce, with the variant Slate Blue/Grey Binding on the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers, the only impressions that have this variant binding from the publisher. All three books have a previous owners bookplate (same) on the front free pastedown, mainly hidden by the dustjacket flap, no other writing noted. A slight musty smell to the books, hopefully airing them out a bit will help. The Return of the King, is a 1st impression, and the dustjacket exhibits the 1st state points with the oversized price and double strokes to the dollar sign. Original maps present in all three volumes, with a minor repair to a tear at the mounting fold of The Fellowship. The set now housed in a custom Black Leather Slipcase, featuring Tolkien's Ring & Eye device, Tengwar titles and author, and Tolkien's monogram to the rear board. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

        Meditations in an Emergency

Grove Press 1957 - First edition of O'Hara's first full-length collection of poems. One of 900 copies. Original stiff wraps. Trivial hints of toning along the extremities, else Fine - appears virtually unread. This edition typically appears for sale either marred with stickers and bookstore price markings or simply full-on trashed. So this copy is truly rare.********** Recently, this work was made famous by its appearance in television’s Mad Men, but it’s been well worth reading on its own before that - especially the title poem and Mayakovsky.         Typed signed letter with holograph salutation, valediction, correction, and annotation dated 31 August 1957 from Winston S. Churchill on his Chartwell stationery to his publisher, Desmond Flower, settling the title and design of the final volume of Churchill's last great work, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples accompanied by the original file copy of Flower's 30th August letter to which Churchill was replying

Chartwell, Kent, 1957. This is a 31 August 1957 typed, signed letter from Winston S. Churchill to Desmond Flower of Cassell settling the title and design of the final volumes of Churchill's last great work, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. Churchill's letter, on his Chartwell Stationery, features his holograph salutation “My dear Desmond,” Churchill's hand correction of the word “paintings” to “painting”, addition of the words “of Volume IV.” at the end of the final sentence, and the holograph valediction “Yours vy sincerely, | Winston S. Churchill”. The letter was acquired from an archive regarding Churchill's publishing history with Cassell. Condition is excellent, clean with a single hole at the upper left corner, consonant with original filing. Churchill's letter is accompanied by Cassell's file copy of the 30th August letter from Flower to Churchill, to which Churchill replies. Uncharacteristically, Churchill extravagantly compliments his publisher (on the dust jacket) and unequivocally defers on the title: “It is not for me, who has retired, to decide upon the question of the title of Volume IV...” This is a striking departure from Churchill's historically overbearing engagement in his literary work. It is also a pacific end to a long and tumultuously delayed publication. In December of 1932, Cassell's Newman Flower paid Churchill a substantial advance for A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, planning on completion in 1939. “It required considerable daring to make such a huge commitment to a notoriously willful author in the depths of the Depression.” But the work was not complete when Churchill returned to the Admiralty and to war in 1939. Nearly two decades and both Churchill's wartime and post-war premierships would intervene before the work was finally completed. The wait proved a mixed blessing. On the one hand, to the benefit of Cassell, the war transformed Churchill into an icon and elevated his already impressive literary career “to quite dizzying heights.” When Newman Flower's son, Desmond (1907-1997) returned to Cassell from the Army in 1946, he had to rebuild the firm, which had lost both its offices and warehouse to bombing and now faced the crippling constraint of paper rationing. Churchill's post-war literary output – all published in Britain by Cassell - was the essential asset to Cassell's postwar recovery. But while Cassell could not do without Churchill, they likewise could not control an author of his stature. Despite the fact that he had a literary team, Churchill would often communicate directly and imperiously with Desmond on every facet of writing and publication, varying from issues as granular as typographic errors in a volume's index to font size and margins. In this context, Desmond Flower's habituated servility toward Churchill in his 30 August 1957 two-page, five paragraph letter to Churchill is not surprising. Flower very carefully solicits Churchill's assent for retitling the final volume: “I know that you have up to the present called it “The Nineteenth Century”. But we feel that this has not quite got the majestic rightness of the titles which you have given to the previous volumes. May we suggest for your consideration “The Great Democracies”.” After a lengthy justification, Flower entreats: “We should feel very happy if this suggestion appealed to you enough for it to be adopted.” The closing paragraphs discuss the specific images secured for the strikingly illustrated dust jacket and close with almost fawningly obsequious good wishes. But the once relentlessly demanding and tempestuous author was 83. He had resigned his second and final premiership more two years earlier. And now he had laid down his pen, having finished writing the last volume of the last great work of his literary career. Churchill's reply to Flower echoes with finality, distinctly un-Churchillian in convivial submissiveness and poignant magnanimity.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples. The Birth of Britain; The New World; The Age of Revolution; The Great Democracies.

London: Cassell and Company Ltd, 1957–8 - 4 volumes, octavo (235 x 151 mm). Bound for Asprey in near-contemporary red morocco, spines lettered in gilt, gilt fillet to covers, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. With a presentation inscription to company manager John White, dated 18th March 1959, to front free endpaper of vol. I. Spines very lightly faded, a few tiny marks to morocco, a couple of covers lightly bowed. A highly appealing set. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. A handsomely bound set of Churchill's masterpiece. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War. The present set constitutes the third edition of vol. I, the second edition of vol. II, and the first edition of vols. III and IV. Cohen A267.1(I).c; A267.1(II).b; A267.1(III-IV).a.

Typed letter signed to Eileen Cond.

London: 5 December 1957 - Single sheet (204 x 127 mm), letterhead of Kemsley House, London, W.C.1., with recipient's name handwritten, addressed to: Miss Eileen Cond, Stream Cottage, Sidmouth, Devon. Lightly creased where folded, tiny closed tear to lower right-hand tip, in excellent condition. Fleming writes to this "most faithful follower" of his fortunes: "I well remember my pleasure at getting your letter shortly after 'Casino Royale' was published. It was my first fan letter from a member of the public! here, with my very best wishes, is your bookplate for 'The Diamond Smugglers'." Eileen Cond was a book collector who sent out her bookplate to her favourite authors, many of whom signed and returned them to her. Cond's copy of The Diamond Smugglers, which was published a month prior to this letter, was sold at Heritage Auctions in 2008; Fleming inscribed the bookplate "To Eileen Cond – the faithful one – from Ian Fleming, 1957".         Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book in Near Fine dust jacket. Very slight scuffing to the lower corner of the rear board, otherwise Fine. Dust jacket spine a bit toned and with a tiny snag at the mid-spine, a few small nicks at the extremities. The jacket retains the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
