Zoo Quest to Guiana [with] Zoo Quest for a Dragon [with] Zoo Quest in Paraguay [with] Quest in Paradise [with] Zoo Quest to Madagascar [with] Quest under Capricorn. THE 'ZOO QUEST' SERIES COMPLETE IN DUSTWRAPPERS

Lutterworth Press. 6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispieces and very numerous coloured and monochrome plates throughout, neat signature on front free endpaper of first volume; original cloth (green/red/green/red/blue/green respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper, the wrappers mildly chipped at extremities but with no major loss. A bright, fresh set in the original colourful wrappers of Attenborough's earliest books, recording his 'Zoo Quest' animal-foraging expeditions in many different territories. Well-illustrated and delightfully written, these early titles display much of the talent and infectious charm that has since made their author a naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of world renown. The series captures well the appeal of his first-ever television series 'Zoo Quest' that ran on the BBC from 1954-1964. It also gave rise, incidentally (in those far-off pre-computer days), to a highly popular board game! The sequence comprises 'Zoo Quest to Guiana' (1956), 'Zoo Quest for a Dragon' (1957), 'Zoo Quest to Paraguay' (1959), 'Quest in Paradise' (1960), 'Zoo Quest to Madagascar' (1961) and 'Quest under Capricorn' (1963). Two omnibus volumes of extracts were published for a new generation of readers in the 1980s. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE.

         Malone Dies

Grove Press 1956 - The middle volume of Beckett's landmark trilogy, the first American edition of Malone Dies came with a plain blank canvas cover with the title and author's name stamped in black on the cover and spine, and an extremely fragile plastic dust jacket, completely blank except for the price ($3.75) stamped on the inside flap. This edition was numbered, 1-500, and this is copy number 211. The book itself is in fine condition, with only some tanning on the front flyleaf to indicate this is not a new book. The glassine dust jacket has two noticeable tears, but the price is intact. A truly striking and unique package, a key work of 20th-century literature, and a worthy addition to any Beckett collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Chronicles of Narnia:] The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle.

London: Geoffrey Bles [and] The Bodley Head, 1950-1956 - 7 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in full morocco, various colours, titles and pictorial centre tools to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, floral endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a dark blue leather entry slipcase. An excellent set. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. All first editions, first impressions. A complete set of the much acclaimed Narnia series. "The immediate inspiration for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy. The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning. As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author".
