         KRABICE ZIVÝCH

Praha (Prague) : Státni Nakl. Krásné Literatury, Hudby A Umeni(1956). 1st Edition: Original Boards with Original Dust Jacket. 8vo. 437 pages ; 21 cm. In the original Czech, later issued in English as "A Box of Lives. " This is a beautiful copy of the scarce first edition with the original illustrated dust jacket. "Norbert Frýd (born Norbert Fried) (1913 - 1976) was a Czech writer, journalist and diplomat. He is known mainly for his autobiographical novel Krabice živých (A Box of Lives, 1956) , in which he describes his experiences in Nazi concentration camps. During World War II, he was imprisoned in the Theresienstadt, Auschwitz and Dachau-Kaufering concentration camps... The plot is set in the last months of 1944, in the fictional concentration camp of Gigling. The main character, the young intellectual Zdenek Roubík, is an assistant in the camp office. One of his jobs is to maintain the card index of the inmates, hence the title of the novel, 'A Box of Lives. ' In the camp, Roubík gradually manages to overcome the apathy and depression caused by the death of his brother and he becomes more actively involved in camp life. The author attempts to depict everyday life, social interactions and relationships in the camp, and the work and hardships of the inmates. The description of the SS guards in the camp is a focus of particular attention...The novel was acclaimed by contemporary critics, and republished in numerous editions and translations. " (Wikipedia, 2017) Frýd's successful novel was published twice in Czech in 1956, with this 1st edition being much rarer than the stated 2nd edition. OCLC lists just 4 copies worldwide (Emory, Wisconsin, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Univ Of Basel) , and none in New York City or in the North East United States. Slight toning. And minor edgewear to dust jacket but overall both book and jacket are in very good condition. Attractive, rare, and important. (holo2-135-48)

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company Ltd,, 1956–8. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines in gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Illustrated throughout with maps and genealogical tables. A very good set, vol. I with faint tape residue to free endpapers, in the jackets with slightly toned spines, a couple of short closed tears, extremities rubbed and a little creased, tape reinforcement to verso of two vols, vol. IV price-clipped. First editions, first impressions. Churchill began his history of the British Empire and the United States during his period in the political wilderness in the early 1930s, but did not complete it until after his retirement in the late 1950s. The events of the Second World War, the major interruption in the writing process, had reconfirmed his belief in the "special relationship" between Britain and the United States. Consequently he gave considerable attention to the key events of American history: around a quarter of the third volume, The Age of Revolution, is dedicated to the War of Independence, and a full third of the final volume, The Great Democracies, contains a detailed study of the American Civil War.

The Making of the King James Bible: A Monograph, with Comparisons from the Bishops Bible and the Manuscript Annotations of 1602, with an Original Leaf from the Great "She" Bible of 1611

Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles 1956 - Folio. 31pp. One of 290 copies printed at the Plantin Press for Dawson's Book Shop. Though this title usually only includes one original leaf, this particular copy contains two, one from the Book of Proverbs and another from the Book of Matthew, both with two woodcut initials. The "Great She Bible of 1611" is really a corrected version printed in 1613 of the "Great He Bible of 1611", in which a typographic error results in the Book of Ruth having a "he", referring to Boaz, placed where a "she", referring to Ruth, should be. The "Great She Bible" is thus the second authorized printing of the King James Bible, with the "He" version being the first. Willoughby's comprehensive monograph on the King James Bible discusses the factors that impacted the first printing, and is illustrated with facsimiles from the 1611 edition. Leaves show some foxing and minor wear to edges, else fine. Bound in quarter cloth and printed boards in glassine. Some rubbing to corners and mark on front board. Near fine overall. Bookplate. (BCC #45; Chalmers 113, p. 84). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         FORBIDDEN PLANET

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. A novelization of the pioneering 1956 American science fiction film from MGM, produced by Nicholas Nayfack, directed by Fred M. Wilcox, and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, and Robby the Robot. The novel, which was released shortly before the film, delves further into the mysteries of the vanished Krell and Morbius' relationship to them. It also includes an element never included in the film: when Dr. Ostrow dissects one of the dead Earth-type animals, he discovers that its internal structure precludes it from ever having been alive in the normal biological sense. The tiger, deer, and monkey are all conscious creations by Dr. Morbius using the Great Machine as companions ("pets") for his daughter and only outwardly resembly their Earth counterparts. This is a MGM vault copy, with a label from the MGM Script Department on the front flyleaf, blue MGM ink stamps to the front flyleaf and all three edges, and a cloth label stamped "VAULT COPY" to the spine heel of the dust jacket. Octavo. Original yellow cloth binding, with gray stamping. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with some occasional light edgewear.

The entire cast and crew of the production, Kermit Bloomgarden, Joseph Schildkraut, Susan Strasberg, Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Dennie Moore, Jack Gilford, Clinton Sundberg, Lou Jacobi, Garson Kanin, Boris Aronson, Helene Pons, and Leland Watson, had successful careers in the entertainment industry. Joseph Schildkraut, the actor who played Otto Frank, was a prolific film and theatre actor who performed in Show Boat (1927) , The Twilight Zone (1961) , Marie Antoinette (1938) among several others. He "received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Alfred Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola (1937) " and was nominated for a Best Actor Emmy Award in 1963 (Wikipedia, 2016) . Susan Strasberg, daughter of Lee Strasberg of the Actors Studio, was "the youngest actress to star on Broadway with her name above the marquee title" for her Tony nominated role as Anne Frank in this production (Wikipedia, 2016) . Strasberg starred and guest-starred in many other roles throughout her career and wrote two books, one an autobiography and one about her friendship with Marilyn Monroe. Jack Gilford, the actor who played Mr. Dussel, was discovered by his mentor Milton Berle, was nominated for several Tony Awards and an Academy Award, and started the comedy tradition of monology later used by comedians such as Lenny Bruce and Woody Allen. His career was derailed when choreographer Jerome Robbins named him and his wife, Madeline Lee, as Communist sympathizers to HUAC. This is one of the fancier programs that you have to purchase, rather than the playbill programs that they give out. SUBJECT(S) : Anne Frank, Broadway, Theatre. OCLC lists no holdings worldwide.          Diamonds are Forever

Jonathan Cape, London 1956 - HARDBACK - A very good or better book, free of any previous owner names or inscriptions. There is light toning to the page block, but internally the pages are clean, as are the books boards. The dust wrapper is a very nice example, benifitting from some subtle restoration to the spine tips, but with no cleaning to the wrapper. There is light soiling to the rear panel, but overall, the dust wrapper presents as a very good or better example, with the publishers printed price of 12s.6d.net present. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
