Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. Yearbook 1950-1951. [Cover title]: AI: Nineteen Fifty - Nineteen Fifty-one

(Long Beach, California): Alpha Iota Chapter of Theta Sigma Phi. 1951. Oblong folio. Measuring 19.5" x 8.25". Plastic spiral bound handpainted and hand-lettered card covers with plastic overlay. Light edgewear, a few of the affixed elements (probably photographs) are lacking, a couple of others have become loose or detached, but otherwise nice and near fine. A completely handmade, well-designed, and very attractive yearbook made for a sorority chapter, in Long Beach, California, probably at Los Angeles-Orange County State College (now California State University, Long Beach). A long introductory poem about the Chapter's activities is signed "R.P.L." which seems to indicate the member Rosemary Leal who is listed elsewhere in the book. Each page has been carefully and artfully handlettered, usually with affixed photographs, invitations to events, clippings, or letters indicating the various activities of the sorority. The yearbook highlights chapter events, both locally and nationally, service activities that the sorority participated in: Red Cross, March of Dimes, Christmas Seals, etc., and many others: bridal showers and engagement parties, dances, fashion shows, excursions, Mother's Day events, a Gold Rush 49ers-theme pledge party, a Lone Ranger and Tonto "mock initiation," Halloween Party, etc.Los Angeles-Orange County State College was founded in 1949, so presumably this would shed some light on the very early days of the institution. Considering the amount of labor that went into the yearbook, it seems likely that this appealing artifact is unique . .

The Great Beast. The Life of Aleister Crowley (With The Scarce Promotional Band, Book Flyer and a Signed Letter By The Author) Rider : 1951

The First UK Printing published by Rider in 1951. The BOOK is in near Fine Condition. A little pushing at the spine ends. Mild offsetting to the end papers. Light toning to the text block with a few small darker marks to the lower text-block. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The fragile paper WRAPPER is price-clipped and is in Very Good+ condition. Edge-wear with a little loss at the upper front fold and spine head. Nicks and closed tears to the rear cover and upper spine and lower rear spine fold. Two small rubbed areas to the rear cover. The rare Promotional Band is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with some spotting and creasing in places. The Band has the comments: 'The Wickedest man in the world', 'The king of depravity' et al. The wrapper and band look very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover . The book is accompanied by a Flyer for another Symonds' title ' The Magic of Aleister Crowley' and also a letter Signed by John Symonds dated 1958. In this letter Symonds details how to access Crowley's work. He finishes the letter : '.The only way to build up a collection of Crowleyana is to have plenty of money and bid for the items when they come up in Sotherby's!.'. The first of Symonds' four biographical books of Crowley which introduced readers to 'The Great Beast'. The book also includes, as an appendix, Gerald Yorke's ground-breaking Bibliography of Crowley. Symonds met Crowley a year before his death in 1947 and was named his literary executor. He was fascinated yet quite critical of his subject, leading Crowley's personal secretary Israel Regardie to label him 'that most hostile biographer'. Very scarce with such attributes.

1951. Zusammen 12¼ SS. auf 14 Bll. Verschiedene Formate. Die Photographie i. F. 201:125 mm. This is not what I consider a final draft of Gigi, by any means, for there is plenty of work to be done on it. But I do feel it is at a stage where I should proceed according to the ideas of the director. My own concept of the play is that the whole thing should be in the mood of a rather naughty Valentine and that it must definitely have a girl in the title role who can emerge as a star. (Mind you, I do think that the part will give any actress plenty of scope and opportunity.) Another idea I have is this - - If it were a possibility that Bethel Leslie could play Gigi, it might also be a possibility that Helen Hayes would play Aunt Alicia. I know that Helen has been considering to do a play with Bethel, should the right one come along. So this might be it [...]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. IV. 1951). (2½ SS. auf 3 Bll.): "Love to my twin brother from | Anita".

        The Fear of God

Garden City: Doubleday, 1951 - Later printing. Very good in a mended dust jacket. The author was an Irish born priest who was a successful promoter of Evangelical Catholicism, holding mass rallies and using mass media as part of his ÒFamily Rosary Crusade.Ó Especially popular in Latin America, he tied himself closely to the C.I.A., an overly cozy relationship that he was eventually forced to abandon. He was criticized for leading a lavish lifestyle, but claimed that this was due to the generosity of his friends in Hollywood, and not at his insistence or request. This copy has been signed on the endpapers by many of those Hollywood actors and personalities, including Art Linkletter, Elinor Donahue, James Gleason, Jane Withers Moss (her married name at the time), Francis X. Bushman, Ward Bond, Rosalind Russell, Van Johnson, Charles Boyer, Ricardo Montalban and his sister-in-law, Loretta Young. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

WAR SPEECHES OF THE RT. HON. WINSTON S. CHURCHILL. Compiled by Charles Eade

London: Cassell and Co, 1951-1952. 3 volumes. First Edition. Tall 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue-black cloth lettered in gilt on the spines, in the original printed and decorated dustjackets. xvi, 483; xvi, 560; xvi, 578 pp. A very handsome and well preserved set, the cloth bright and clean, the gilt very well preserved, the textblocks fresh and solid. SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF THESE IMPORTANT WAR TIME SPEECHES. Sets of Churchill’s War Speeches have become quite elusive in recent years. We are pleased to be able to offer this complete set. Churchill was, over nearly a century’s activity, known for his almost universal genius. He was perhaps, the greatest orator and statesman of the twentieth century. He was a consummate writer--indeed he was awarded the Noble Prize for literature for his massive study of The Second World War--a master historian, journalist, traveler cum explorer cum military man. He was an accomplished painter and biographer, an extraordinary politician and government leader, but through these speeches, it is quite possible that we will remember him best. For in the speeches of wartime he succeeded in convincing his colleagues to accept the pains of courage and the British ‘race’ of people and the “free world” to make the good fight, to suffer the inestimable cost that would save the world from tyranny and totalitarianism. His vision was unrelenting and without peer and it is captured nowhere more completely than in these speeches of wartime. 4700 sets were published on Sept. 3, 1952. Although the note on p.[vi] states that the publication took place in 1951, printing difficulties caused a delay of twelve months. There are additional speeches in these volumes which did not appear in the wartime volumes and a very useful index and diary of events.

        Le Bluffeur

Paris, Gallimard, coll.
