        Ayn Rand Signed Photograph.

Large signed photograph of Ayn Rand. Inscribed by her to Barbara Branden, "Dear Barbara, you remind me of myself and I wish us both that you remain that way - With love -Ayn June 21, 1951." While living in New York during the early 1950's, the recipient, Barbara, and her future husband, Nathaniel Branden, befriended Rand and her husband Frank O'Connor. Not only would the couple go on to become major proponents of Objectivism (establishing the Nathaniel Branden Institute in 1958 with Barbara serving as Rand's assistant), but their personal lives would be dramatically intertwined with Rand's. Begrudgingly sanctioned by both Barbara and Frank, Nathaniel began an affair with Ayn in 1954. The secret couple had a very public break in 1968, almost certainly due to Branden's affair with actress Patrecia Scott who he later married. The photograph measures 8 inches by 10 inches. Matted and framed, which measures 17.5 inches by 19.5 inches. Photographs signed by Rand are exceptionally rare. Ayn Rand is known for her two best-selling novels, The Fountainhead (1943) and Atlas Shrugged (1957), and for developing a philosophical system called Objectivism. "From 1943 until its publication in 1957, [Rand] worked on the book that many say is her masterpiece, Atlas Shrugged. This novel describes how a genius named John Galt grows weary of supporting a society of ungrateful parasites and one day simply shrugs and walks away. He becomes an inspiration to like-minded men and women, all of whom eventually follow his example, until society, in its agony, calls them back to responsibility and respect. Again [as with Rand's novel The Fountainhead in 1943] reviews were unsympathetic, and again people bought the book" (ANB). By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives.

        The Grass Harp

Random House 1951 - Truman Capote (1951) ‘The Grass Harp’, US first edition, first printing, published by Random House. And a first edition, third printing published by Random House which is signed to Rita Allan: “for Rita [Allen] who so much helped to make the Grass Harp come alive on the stage, Truman”. Rita Allen co-produced ‘The Grass Harp’ as a play on Broadway in 1952. This makes the book a unique association copy. A great value offer. Condition: the first print copy is practically mint with a stunning dust jacket. The signed third printing copy lacks a corresponding dust jacket and shows signs of shelf wear, in particular to the edges. The last pictures show the difference between a first and later print (coarse cloth vs plain cloth). The first play performance on Broadway was in March 1952 to wide acclaim.       Macdonald, London 1951-1969. A first edition set of Williamson's celebrated semi-autobiographical sequence of fifteen novels which explore the fortunes of one family during the first half of the twentieth century. 8vo. Several top edges lightly dust marked, with just a hint of light partial browning to two or three free endpapers. Former owner name and date neatly inked to the front free endpaper of each volume, in each instance accompanied by a small area of surface abrasion (possibly a result of somebody trying to obscure this signature), but the impact is extremely minor. One volume ('The Gale of the World') also contains a tiny dealer plate to the front pastedown. An extremely crisp set in the original James Broom-Lynne-designed pictorial dust wrappers, none of which have been price-clipped. A number exhibit a little minor rubbing and chafing to the spine ends, and some occasional minor dust soiling to the predominantly white rear panels. The publisher's red spine panel colouring to 'Love and the Loveless' is faded as is so often the case although this example much less so that is customary. 'The Golden Virgin' is complete with the uncommon 'Daily Mail Book of the Month' wraparound band. The only dust wrapper that is graded below very good is 'Donkey Boy' which exhibits some taped reinforcement and restoration. A very nice example of an increasingly scarce set - a Burgess Ninety-Nine.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good.

(Jerome David) Salinger's (1919-2010) first and only novel, the Holden Caulfield book he'd worked on for nearly a decade. This novel was a bestseller in its time and is still considered one of the classics of American literature, it continues to sell about a quarter-million copies per year. It endures as talismanic to discontented youth and perfectly captures the voice of the author, reflecting his own troubled school days. "What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though." (N.B., quote from the Salinger.)___DESCRIPTION: Original black cloth covered boards with gilt lettering to backstrip, octavo size (8" by 5.5"), pagination: [i-vi] [1-2] 3-277, first edition, first printing, in original pictorial first issue dust jacket showing original price of $3.00, photo of author on back panel has the top of his head right at the top edge (no space).___CONDITION: A very good copy, the boards are clean and still a rich black hue, no sunning to backstrip with the gilt lettering still bright, very minimal shelfwear to the lower edges and only slightly bumped at lower corners, upper corners are straight; internally bright with only minimal age-toning to the outer edges and a few faint odd stains, endpapers with a few light stains, a square text block with solid hinges, no cocking to spine, and other than a small notation in ink at the top left of the verso of the rear free endpaper free of prior owner markings. The unclipped dust jacket is bright, the backstrip and covers are all of one tone with some light sunning to the upper approximately 2" of the front panel; the jacket has been lightly restored by a professional conservator (contact us for details or photos), the jacket is now near fine on the outside, with some toning inside; overall a very good copy in a very good jacket. An essential book for any collector of important American literature.___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.         THE MEMOIRS OF HERBERT HOOVER: Years of Adventure, 1874-1920; The Cabinet and the Presidency, 1920-1933; [and] The Great Depression, 1929-1941

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1951. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. The first volume is a second printing; the second and third volumes are first printings. Before serving as America's 31st President from 1929 to 1933, Hoover (1874-1964) had achieved international success as a mining engineer and worldwide gratitude as "The Great Humanitarian" who fed war-torn Europe during and after World War I. This reputation was somewhat tarnished when his Republican administration failed to alleviate the economic hardships of the Great Depression. The first two volumes are inscribed on the front flyleaf by Hoover to William Coberly, whose daughter Margaret married the former president's son Allan in 1937. Octavo. Original blue cloth bindings, with gilt titles. Minor offsetting to the front endpaper in the second and third volumes. The front hinge of the second volume is tender. A bit of wear to the corners and tips. Some general shelfwear to the dust jackets, with a prominent chip to the front panel of the third volume; else about very good.

THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING: A PLAY - INSCRIBED

New Directions Books, New York 1951 - First Printing. Octavo (21cm); tan cloth, with titles stamped in maroon on spine; yellowish-brown topstain; dustjacket; [x],118; illustrated frontispiece. Inscribed by the author (in ink) on the front endpaper: "For Emily Stewart / with best wishes / Carson McCullers." Beneath the inscription is the recipient's holograph (in pencil) account of the events which led to her meeting McCullers: "I bought this book on board the S.S. Constitution in March, 1952. I then discerned that Carson McCullers was on board the ship and asked her to autograph it. She was partially crippled, and very peculiar looking & acting. She and her husband were on their way to Vienna, where, as he remarked "they could live much cheaper than in New York." Emily Stewart." Recipient's armorial bookplate mounted to front pastedown, with faint offset front glue onto front endpaper; hint of sunning to upper board edges, else very Near Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, gently spine-sunned, with a single closed tear to upper edge, and a few faint splash marks to spine panel; Very Good+ or better, with the spine lettering unfaded. McCullers adapted her 1946 novel of the same name for the Broadway production directed by Harold Clurman; it opened on January 5, 1950, at the Empire Theatre, where it ran for 501 performances. The cast included Ethel Waters, Julie Harris, and Brandon deWilde, who made his debut at 7 years-old. The play won the Donaldson Award and the New York Drama Critics' Prize for Best American Play of the 1950 season. An exceptionally well-preserved copy with interesting provenance. Carson and husband Reeves, re-married at this point for seven tumultuous years, were on their way to Europe; 20 months after this book was inscribed, Reeves died of an overdose of sleeping pills in their Paris apartment, after trying to convince Carson to commit suicide with him.
