Fifteen Hand-Colored Holiday Cards with Art by Legendary New Yorker Artist Al Frueh

1950. Very Good. Fifteen different hand-colored holiday cards by artist Al Frueh, dates range from 1921 thru 1950, with most from the 1920s and 30s. Various sizes and formats, from small cards to broadsides that have been folded to be mailed. Paper on verso of some are a bit skinned from having been mounted in an album, but all are otherwise very good or better. Several have been mailed, all addressed to the Bode family. Each of the cards appears to be a woodcut print with hand-coloring by Frueh. Subjects range from traditional holiday themes: stockings hung from the mantelpiece, wreaths, angels. etc. to more topical subjects such as a play on the WPA logo ("G&A Frueh: We Do Our Stuff"), Hitler and Mussolini (for 1937; "Heilee, Heilo from Al Hitler and Giuliette Mussolini"), Frueh and his wife are pictured as monkeys picking bugs off of each other (for 1925, the year of the Scopes Monkey Trial), and in 1922 an image of Santa Claus in a Klan outfit from "The Frueh Klux Klan." The Ohio-born Frueh was an artist and caricaturist who was a contributor to the inaugural issue of The New Yorker, and drew the cover for the second issue. He remained on the staff for more than half of a century. His specialty was the Broadway and entertainment scene and he was the direct precursor to caricaturist and Broadway chronicler Al Hirschfeld. A particularly pleasing group of holiday cards by a unique and amusing artist.

Berlin, 1944. S. 411ff. - Mit interessantem Mediziner-Exlbris Dr. George Meyer (1860-1923 Mitbegründer der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft). - Unbeschnitten. - Etwas berieben, oberes Kapital mit kleiner Fehlstelle.          Feu Hermanos, Portimao (Portugal)

Portimao, Portugal: Feu Hermanos, 1950. Oblong album (17 x 26.5 cm.), 15 leaves, with original silver print photographs, captioned in white letterpress on rectos. Text in English, German and French throughout. FIRST EDITION. A promotional photograph album, with a title page and fourteen photographs, depicting the factory building, the trawler fleet, workers loading baskets with fish, a mechanical basket conveyor, sardines being set up to dry and later be boiled, the packing department at work, workers (mostly women), workers sealing the tins mechanically (mostly men), the tin assembling department and the worker's canteen. There is also a very interesting image of the children of workers being fed, with the explanation, "During the months of January to April, whilst the tinning of sardines is not allowed on account of the poor quality of the fish, we feed the workers' children at our expense." Fabrica de Conservas Feu Hermanos was one of the largest fish canning operations in the world, located in Portimao, on the southern coast of Portugal. Feu Hermanos had the advantage of the natural conditions of the meeting point of the Atlantic, the river Arade, and the Mediterranean, conditions that had made this area of Portugal attractive from prehistoric times, through Roman and Islamic occupations. The factory now houses the Museu de Portimao, a museum given to the region's history. Not long ago, the Museu was the site of a brief resurrection of Hermanos' iconic Rose brand sardines. The tissue guards for each photo have been removed, with one exception; photographs and leaves fine. Cord-bound in patterned, black cloth covers with some light soiling; stamped title to front panel. Near fine. Unrecorded. [OCLC locates no copies; no other references to this work identified].

         Moshe Dayan

May 12, 1950. Autograph Letter Signed “Moshe Dayan,” in Hebrew, two separate pages, 5” x 7”, museum quality framed to 27" x 15", Jerusalem, Israel, May 12, 1950, to the painter Mr. Ludwig Blum thanking him for his kind gift. The letter reads in full: “Dear Mr. Blum, I doubt that I can express in a few words my heartfelt thanks to you for your painting of Jerusalem that you gave me for my birthday. I am not trained, nor am I a certified “expert” in painting, but I have a great deal of interest and feelings for the subject. I have always loved painting. For some time before I came to Jerusalem, I was familiar with your paintings of Jerusalem and of the Judean Desert. Since then, during my time in Jerusalem and up until today, I have continued to take an interest in paintings of Jerusalem made by various artists. Jerusalem has been painted in various styles and using various methods, but for me, the true painter of Jerusalem landscapes in none other than you. And it is no coincidence that in all kinds of ... places, whether it is King Abdullah’s palace at Sachne or the cultural activities room of a kibbutz, your artistry is readily apparent. The painting of Jerusalem that you gave me is particularly appealing. The quietness that permeates it, the wintry colors, the Western Wall and the Temple Mount at its center, all these unite to express its character in a tone that is at once harmonious, quiet and strong. I cannot conclude without touching on another subject â€

The poet becomes the voice of those who have been subjugated, namely indigenous groups, the working class and Third World nations" (Encyclopedia of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Cultures). Near-contemporary red crushed morocco, spines lettered in gilt with gilt motifs, gilt rules to boards and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, edges gilt. An excellent set. Frontispiece and 15 colour plates to each volume. An attractively bound set of the charmingly illustrated novels, first published with Brock's illustrations between 1907 and 1909. C. E. Brock (1870-1938) first appeared as an illustrator of Jane Austen for Macmillan's 1895-7 series, though he illustrated only Pride and Prejudice, with Hugh Thomson illustrating the other five titles. That series appeared in black and white, which better suited Thomson's skilful use of line. A decade later J. M. Dent, realising Brock's potential as a colourist, commissioned him to redo the Pride and Prejudice suite in colour, and also to create colour illustrations for the other five Austen titles. The colourful costumes and interior decor depicted here are reputedly accurate to the Regency period, as Charles Brock and his brother Henry collected antique furniture and clothing so that their friends and relations could model for the artists in their Cambridge studio.

         Knoll Index of Designs

Knoll Associates, Inc. 1950 - First Edition. Spiral-bound quarto. Comprehensive catalogue of Knoll's mid-century modern designs. Designed by Herbert Matter, the catalogue is organized into six chapters devoted to "Chairs", "Tables", "Chests, Cabinets, Beds", "Desks, Offices", and "Textiles". Each chapter includes comprehensive black and white photography of the furniture, both isolated and in-situ. Matter's simple yet innovative graphic design is displayed throughout; for example the chapters are divided by a different cardstock, chosen to evoke some element of the materiality that follows. Designers included are Franco Albini, Hans Bellman, Bonet, Kurchan and Hardoy, Pierre Jeanneret, Florence Knoll, Donald Knorr, Mies van der Rohe, George Nakashima, Isamu Noguchi, Eero Saarinen, Abel Sorensen, Richard Stein, Elias Svedberg, Jean Bauret, Michela Bronzini, Dorothy Cole, Eszter Haraszty, Stig Lindberg, Franz lorenz, Noemi Raymond, Astrid Sampe, Marianne Strengell, Angelo Testa, Harry Bertoia, Charles Niedinghaus, and Murray Rothenberg. Additional photographer credits are extended to Hockaday Associates, Erza Stoller and (Robert) Damora. Some light offsetting on the cardstock chapter dividers, small bump evident at base of spiral binding, light wear to edges and corners; a near fine example of a fragile book. Together with: 4 pp. of autograph musical sketches and a 3-page textual draft of a poem entitled "Harmonies of the Spheres;" a typescript copy of the final text; and two photocopies of the poem, all with some annotations in pencil. An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996). Spectrum no.1 'Symphonies in Sonic Vibration' (1955) and Leiyla and the Poet (1959) have been recorded." Denise A. Seachrist in Grove Music Online. An early pioneer of electronic music, El-Dabh composed one of the earliest known works of tape music, or "musique concrète," in 1944, The Expression of Zaar. He also scored four ballets for Martha Graham: Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962), and Lucifer (1975). Harmonies of the Spheres: 10 Nations Rejoice was commissioned for the Middfest International Celebration in Middletown, Ohio.

         Chaim Weizmann

, May 17, 1950. May 17, 1950. Printed Document Signed “Chaim Weizmann” as first President of Israel and “Moshe Sharett” as first Foreign Minister, one page, 25” x 17”. In Hebrew. Completed in manuscript block letters. Hakirya, 1 Sivan 5710 (May 17, 1950). Official embossed 2.5” diameter paper seal affixed near lower edge and embossed with the seal of the State of Israel at top center. Appointment of Chaim Raphael as Deputy Consul of Israel in London. In part, “His jurisdiction will include the entire United Kingdom and Northern Ireland...I hereby request King George the Sixth, and all the authorities with an interest in the matter, to recognize Mr. Chaim Raphael in his declared office, and allow him the freedom to fulfill his role in confidence, to grant him all the rights and immunities her is entitled to by his office and grant him all the assistance and protection he may need...” This document was issued in Hakirya, outside of Tel Aviv, not from Jerusalem, the capital of Israel. A statement of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion before the Knesset (Israeli parliament) five months earlier, on December 13, 1949, explains: “In the stress of war, when Jerusalem was under siege, we were compelled to establish the seat of Government in Hakirya by Tel Aviv. But for the State of Israel there has always been and always will be one capital only - Jerusalem the eternal. So it was three thousand years ago - and so it will be, we believe, until the end of time.” A career diplomat, Chaim Raphael later served in Australia and Southeast Asia, and as Israel’s Ambassador to Congo (Brazzaville) and Madagascar and Mauritius. He was Israel’s first Ambassador to New Zealand at the time of his death in 1977; before his appointment in 1975, the jurisdiction of the Israeli Ambassador to Australia included New Zealand. Chaim Weizmann was President of Israel from 1948-1952. Moshe Sharett (1894-1965), Israeli Foreign Minister from 1948-1956, was Prime Minister of Israel from 1953-1955. He was a Signer and one of the authors of the Israeli Proclamation of Independence. Foxed and soiled in blank areas at perimeter, tears and soiling in wide right margin. Encapsulated in near fine condition. Matting would eliminate all of the major defects. Israeli diplomatic appointments are scarce and rarely appear on the market. This one, accrediting an Israeli diplomat to the consulate in London, issued just two years after the ending of the British Mandate for Palestine and the birth of the State of Israel, is especially desirable.

Le Noble Jeu de L'Oie ["The Noble Game of the Goose"] en France, de 1640 à 1950; La Vie Quotidienne à Paris de 1820 à 1824..

Paris: Librairie Gründ, 1950. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Number 165 of 700, folio size, 237 pp., illustrated. Le Noble Jeu de L'Oie...("The Noble Game of the Goose") can be traced back to at least 1480, when it was mentioned in an Advent sermon - warning the churchgoers not to play Goose and other games at Christmas. The game is simple, with the players rolling the dice and moving the requisite number of spaces, with no skill on the part of the player required; however, using double dice, the game could reach a fast and furious pitch. While many Americans are not aware of Goose, it has had a profound effect on the development of many board games still played by children today, the circular game board and rules are similar to "Chutes and Ladders." This book, published in 1950, is an authoritative bibliography on the game, presenting examples of many different types of boards used over the centuries with definitive text on the game. Game boards have yielded vast and varying themes, including commerce, industry, sports, fine art, hot air balloons, heraldry, astrology, spiritualism, plants, animals, railways, theater, fashion, children's games, daily life, the alphabet et al. ***DESCRIPTION: Original illustrated paper covered boards, with lettering printed in black to backstrip, plain endpapers, mostly unopened, 48 double-page photo gravures, 9 of which are hand-colored, headers, footers, many textual illustrations and vignettes; folio size (13.25" by 10"), pagination: [1-5] 6-237 [1 colophon], limited edition, number 165 of 700. ***CONDITION: A very good copy with bright plates, text leaves are mostly unopened, no prior owner marks, professionally re-hinged, except for some minor foxing at the edges and slight rubbing at the corners, this is a better than very good, a lovely copy. ***CITATION: Information above from an article by Adrian Seville published in The Ephemera Journal, May 2015. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
