Collected Poems 1909-1935 [The Waste Land, Prufrock]

Faber and Faber, London 1945 - Eliot's great early poems in a copy inscribed to the French pioneer in infant psychology, Odette Brunet. Writing in blue ink on the title page, Eliot has crossed out his printed name and written below it: 'Inscribed for Odette Brunet by T.S. Eliot [underlined]'. This is the eighth impression of this work, dating from 1945, a near fine copy in a fair jacket which is missing large chips from the upper cover and the tail of the spine. Nothing is known about Odette Brunet and T S Eliot although the conjunction of the two in this copy might repay further research.          Jonques et Sampans.

Paris Horizons de France 1945 - 4to., 154, [iv] pp., 148 colour illustrations including 16 full-page, original wrappers, card chemise and slipcase, an excellent example. First edition of this beautifully illustrated work, limited to only 525 copies. The illustrations, printed in a very high quality, offer a sharp-eyed account of Charles Fouqueray's voyages from Singapore to Hong Kong, Macao, and Shanghai. Representing the different shapes of boats in these regions, the watercolours also focus on the local sailors and fishermen in action. Fouqueray's use of a large range of colours to depict the sea's various tints and shades conveys a poetic atmosphere to his illustrations, signed with his orientalist monogramme. A map, at the very beginning of the book, represents part of the Asian coast that was explored and drawn by Fouqueray. The French author Claude Farrère (1876-1957) became known for his novels set in exotic places. After a twenty-five year career in the Army, he decided to concentrate entirely on writing. Winner of the Prix Goncourt in 1905 for his novel Les Civilisés, he was elected chairman of the Academie Française in 1935. Farrère wrote this work on the suggestion of his friend the illustrator Charles Fouqueray, who had sent him watercolours made during a trip in Asia. Charles Fouqueray (1869-1956) studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where one of his masters was the well-known Academic painter Alexandre Cabanel. First interested in painting, he then specialised in illustration, in particular in news magazines such as Le Monde Illustré and L'llustration. In Jonques et Sampans, these two artists convey, mixing text and illustrations, their personal impressions on the East-Asian navigators, ships and waterways. The introductory chapter, written by sea captain and author of several naval history books Auguste Thomazi, gives a thorough but readable description of the two Chinese boats that compose the title of this work: the junks and sampans. In a very personal and easygoing style, Claude Farrère narrates his memories and thoughts about past experiences related to sailing on the East Asian coast. On the original covee are four Chinese characters. They read, as translated in French by the publisher, L'apparition des voiles and Le clapotis des rames.          [PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF ORIGINAL IMAGES, RECORDING AMERICAN SCENES AND EXPERIENCES IN OCCUPIED JAPAN JUST AFTER WORLD WAR II]

[Various locations in Japan, 1945. 124 silver gelatin photographs, mostly 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches, 106 of them in corner mounts. Contemporary blue cloth photograph album. Moderate edge wear and rubbing. Photos in generally nice shape. Very good. A fascinating vernacular photograph album capturing scenes in American-occupied Japan just after the Second World War. Most of the photographs are captioned in white ink on the black album pages, and organized in sections such as "Landmarks," "The People," "The Cities," "The Military," and "Personalities." "Landmarks" include views of sites in Kokura, Yakata, Okayma Prefecture, picturing shrines, country homes, water works, the "International Military Tribunal Far East," and more. "The People" shows Japanese residents of all ages, some in Western dress, others in traditional Japanese garb, standing in front of structures, on the streets, at a military checkpoint, playing "yakkyu national game" [baseball], swimming, and other activities. The section on the cities comprises street views in Okayama, Kokura, Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Yakata, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Yokohama. Surprisingly, the four shots of Hiroshima do not contain much evidence of destruction, and provide a rare, contemporary glimpse of areas of the city not leveled by Little Boy. Views of Tokyo include the Dai Ichi Building, the Imperial Museum, and an image of an American soldier "on the Ginza." The various views in the other cities show Japan's largest steel works, a partially-demolished department store, temples, and the Yokohama wharf. The military section includes photographs of Okayama Post, the "A.G. Office," barracks, headquarters of the 24th Division in Kokura, Kyushu, the Kokura Arsenal and Post Exchange, Fukuoka's 118 Station Hospital, and more. The "Personalities" section is comprised of shots of American soldiers in and out of uniform, almost all of them identified by their first names or nicknames. This section also includes photographs of "A.G. Girls," a few Japanese people identified by name, American soldiers at the War Ministry Hotel in Tokyo, U.S. soldiers at the "4th Repl. Depot" in Sobudai," and more. A handful of the captions, and some of the loose photographs, are captioned in Japanese. Some of the loose photographs are stamped on the verso "Jack Woytych" with his Wisconsin address, though it is unclear whether this refers to the owner/photographer of the album or the printer of the photographs. Most of the loose photos emanate from Okayama. A noteworthy collection of personal images from an American serving in Japan at the end of World War II.

BEL EXEMPLAIRE.          Ballet

New York: J.J. Augustin Publisher, 1945. Decorative bookplate to the front pastedown visible between the flaps of the jacket, lightly bumped at the bottom right corner; a fresh and close to fine copy in a bright near fine example of the fragile French-folded jacket with light wear at the spine ends. Among the nicer copies I have seen.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. 104 gravure plates. Text by Edwin Denby. 500 copies printed. Although Brodovitch is best known as a graphic designer and art director, Ballet remains one of the most influential of the great twentieth century photobooks, presaging every trend in cinematic book editing, and challenging the notion that the image had to be representational of its subject.          The Teachings.

London: The Sylvan Press,, 1945. Selection from his writings Compiled and introduced by Professor N. Gangulee, formerly of the University of Calcutta. Foreword by His Excellency Dr. V. K. Wellington Koo, the Chinese Ambassador in Great Britain. Small octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles to spine and front in orange. With the dust jacket, supplied. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Cloth mottled particularly around the spine, split to cloth at rear joint, a poor copy. With a supplied dust jacket, sunned to spine, lightly dust soiled and with very small chips to ends and corners. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed by the compositor to H. G. Wells (1866-1946), "To My revered Political Guru Mr. H. G. Wells, one of forerunners of the world organisation. September 1945. N. Gangulee." In this small volume the editor Professor Ganguglee translated and compiled for an English audience selections from the writings of Sun Yat-Sen (1866-1925), the revolutionary founding father of the Republic of China. The inscription to Wells as "one of the forerunners of the world organisation" is appropriate. In his utopian fiction and non-fiction Wells had long prophesied the coming of some form of World Organisation - his best-selling book, The Outline of History (1919) claimed to the first transnational history of mankind, and its 24th chapter envisioned a future "United States of the World". He continued this prophetic theme in several books throughout the 20s and 30s, and thus this book's appearance and presentation at the close of the Second World War (just before Wells's death), as the United Nations was being founded, is appropriate. The wording of Wells's The Rights of Man (1940) was closely followed for the 1948 United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Gulangee's printed dedication in the book here is: "To the Youth of the United Nations for the guidance in understanding the spirit and form of the Chinese Revolution and the Chinese Republic". This book is one of several from the library of H. G. Wells that were sent to his illegitimate daughter Anna-Jane Kennard (1909-2010), the product of his 1908-9 extramarital affair with feminist author Amber Reeves (1887-1981). Well's novel Ann Veronica (1909) is based on his affair with Reeves. Kennard did not know the true identity of her father throughout her childhood and adolescence, but eventually they met. On 6 March 1931 Wells wrote to his daughter: "My dear, I think that you and I have to come to perfectly frank dealings with each other: let us clear up the situation. For 19 years I have been doing my best to ignore your existence because of various humiliating and baffling things that occurred when you were born. Now I have met you, I love you very much." At, or shortly before, Wells's death in 1946, perhaps as a fitting gesture recognising their connection, several boxes of books from the author's library were sent to his daughter, then living in her mother's native New Zealand. This copy has her ink ownership inscription "Kennard" to the rear free endpaper.

Barron, Stepahnie, exiles + emigrés, The Flight of European Artists from Hitler, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1997, siehe Seite 283, Abbildung 275. I'm Crazy" [story in Collier's, December 22, 1945]

The Crowell-Collier Publishing Company, Springfield, Ohio 1945 - The complete story "I'm Crazy" in Collier's of December 22, 1945. Folio. A newsstand edition, not obscured by a mailing label, but with a small arrival date stamp near the title. Wrappers lightly rubbed with a touch of waviness at the top and wear at the lower front foredge with a couple of tiny nicks, very good. This issue contains the first print appearance of Salinger's classic literary creation, Holden Caulfield. The story forms the basis for the first two chapters of The Catcher in the Rye including a visit with Mr. Spencer. However, here Caulfield is portrayed as a more repentant figure lamenting his expulsion from school and with an additional sister, Viola. Accompanying the story is a half-page illustration of Caulfield, bags packed, fleeing school wearing not his red hunting cap but rather a more typical fedora. Salinger, who was always protective of his work, never allowed this or many other early stories to be reprinted. Due to this policy, his uncollected magazine appearances are always in demand and this issue, with such a direct connection to his classic novel, even more so. The true first appearance of one of the most enduring characters in American literature.

         PELELIU LANDING

Carl Hertzog, 1945, El Paso - Deluxe First edition. 4to. Limited edition of 500 copies signed and numbered by the author. This is copy 411. Bound in Marine dungaree cloth, printed on English handmade paper, titles stamped in black on the front cover, pictorial front and rear endpapers (a photograph by Tom Lea taken from a foxhole on Peleliu), 34 pp., illustrated from the author's original battle sketches. Katherine Simons said of this masterpiece: "All the agony and shock of the Marine landing on Peleliu Island are in Lea's narrative. The black and white of the sketches he drew 'before my hand steadied' are stark and poignant beyond the paintings he later made from them for Life magazine. The nervous energy of the Centaur type reinforces the tension of the story: black on dead white it stands. The ruddy words 'Peleliu Landing' on the title page and the big initial M, a single bloody splash of an opening letter intensify, rather than relieve, the note of battle shock." --- Katherine Simons in New Mexico Quarterly, Autumn, 1950, pp. 338-339.
