         ABC Dogs.

New York: Wilfred Funk, Inc,, 1940. Folio. Original blue cloth-back illustrated boards, front board lettered in red, white, blue, green, and black, illustrated endpapers. With the illustrated dust jacket. Illustrations throughout by Tice. Top and base of boards a little rubbed, otherwise an excellent copy in the jacket, spine toned, loss to spine ends, short closed tears to edges of panels, dark spots to panels. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author in pink pencil on the verso of the front free endpaper "To Mindy from Clara and Bill" and illustrated with a unique watercolour of a dog. This charming book features a different breed of dog for each letter of the alphabet. It is rare to find this book with its jacket. Clara Tice (1888-1973) was a notorious New York bohemian artist who began exhibiting her art from 1910. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara,' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time, outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles, and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes, bees and butterflies'" (Sawelson-Gorse, p. 429).

[Photo Album]: "Meine Arbeitsdienstzeit April bis September 1940" (My Labor Service Period April to September 1940)

Germany, 1940. Near Fine. Small oblong 12mo measuring 6" x 4". String-tied decorative red cloth over stiff paper boards. Contains 31 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs all measuring 2.25" x 3.5" with captions in German. Near fine album with fine photographs.A small collection of photographs kept by a German girl while participating in the Nazi youth program of Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD). The organization began in 1935 and was a youth labor service group which trained young men in various manual labor pursuits until they were of military age. When World War II began the Reich opened up the program to German girls dubbing them "Arbeitsmaidens." The official word from the party leaders was that this was a form of "honorary service" for the German people and was "intended to educate German youth in the spirit of National Socialism as a national community and a true working-class, especially to respect the manual work." German girls were taught to perform tasks, usual farm labor, to eventually help with future families and were instilled with the idea that the ultimate goal of their lives should be to marry and have healthy German children. The photos in this album depict a young woman's compulsory six month service with the RAD as an Arbeitsmaid. It begins with a RAD flag with the insignia for the women's division which includes the swastika with "two stylized ears of wheat" beneath it. Following this are group photos of the girls in their uniforms of white blouses and long wool skirts. Other photos show the house they stayed in, eating meals, and performing tasks on a farm including bailing hay and tending to horses. One photo shows a girl picking apples, another shows a woman tending to a garden. All the women in the album appear proud of their service to Germany and happy to do their part. This particular girl's service was completed just before the 1941 decree that stated that Arbeitsmaidens could be used for auxiliary service due to the overwhelming demand for men to join the Wehrmacht. An interesting look at a young German woman's labor service during World War II.

         The Black Album (Ha-albom ha-shahor]

Tel Aviv: The Anti-Nazi League, 1940. Paperback. Very good. Booklet of postcards. 6.5" x 4.25". Complete with all ten postcards. Text in Hebrew, English, and French; postcard captions in English. Minor soiling to the cover. Text and cards are lightly toned. Three of the postcards are separated along their perforations and are laid-in the booklet. This book of postcards published by the Anti-Nazi League of Tel Aviv was a very early-said by some to be the earliest-depiction of Nazi atrocities against the Jews. As noted in the album's introduction, the postcards were intended to publicize Nazi barbarism, "The most tragic thing is that people aren't paying attention to this horrifying information from Poland...that's why the Anti-Nazi League in Palestine took upon itself the task of breaking the apathy of the world community to these events . . . by the representatives of Satan, in an appropriate manner." Each postcard includes the text: "Send this card to everyone you know in the world and participate in the disclosure of the Nazi crimes," and each reproduces a captioned photograph such as "Death in the wake of Hitler," "The work of Nazi hangmen," "The Nazi murderers enjoy themselves," etc. Exceptionally scarce. As of 2017, no other complete albums are for sale in the trade. Rare Book Hub shows only three auction records. OCLC shows four examples are held by institutions; two in the United States and two in Europe, however the two in the United States are identified as later printings.

         BRAIN WAVES AND DEATH

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1940 - 8vo., 244pp.; VG/VG-; spine black and blue pictorial with white and blue lettering; dust jacket protected with a mylar covering, price cut; dust jacket has some chipping to corners, head and tail of spine, lesser chipping to edges; small piece of tape on inside of dust jacket along middle of spine; pages slightly age-toned; teal cloth boards with blue lettering; LP consignment; shelved case 8 BRAIN-WAVES AND DEATH was published posthumously under the pseudonym "Willard Rich" a few weeks after its author, William T. Richards, took his own life. Richards worked for Alfred Lee Loomis and his novel was a thinly veiled account of a real-life laboratory located about 40 miles north of New York City nicknamed "Tuxedo Park." This "secret palace of science" was founded and funded by Loomis, arguably one of the most significant and uncredited figures in the history of modern military science. Loomis, a world-class tinkerer in his own right, was a visionary who saw that technology would win the looming war-and indeed that an investment in "big science" would be the key to national strength in the future. Loomis went on to establish the MIT Rad Lab and later was instrumental in setting up the Manhattan Project. According to legend, Loomis had all copies of Richards' roman-a-clef bought up and destroyed. Obviously he missed a few copies, but the book is uncommon , especially in jacket. Full-priced Rockville.          For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1940 - First edition with the Scribners A of the novel that is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In fine condition. A very nice presentation. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of Hemingway's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords, and he has struck them vibrantly" (J. Donald Adams). It was the basis for the 1943 film directed by Sam Wood, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress; however, only the Greek actress Katina Paxinou won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pilar.          Archive of Over 50 Manuscript WWII Letters.

North Ireland, Sussex, Buckinghamshire, 1940-1944 - Archive of over 50 manuscript signed letters by Major Cyril James "Jim" Lear, a British newspaper journalist and Major in the Royal Berkshire Regiment (his army number 6897312). 8vo. Single leafs, regiment stationery featuring the regiment's China Dragon insignia, measuring approximately 11,5 x 17,5 cm, at least half of which are in their original covers measuring approximately 12 x 9,5 cm and featuring censorship stamps. Together with 4 army documents pertaining to his transfer to the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1940, one photographic string-tied Christmas greeting card issued for use by the regiment officers in 1941, and one portrait photograph. Army documents creased, otherwise the lot in very good condition. Cyril James Lear (1911-1987) was a British newspaper editor, who served with the Royal Army during World War II. On 18 April 1939 he was enlisted as a rifleman with the Queen's Westminsters. He obtained a commission as a Major in the Royal Berkshire Regiment in September 1940. The present stationery suggests that he was attached to the sixth battalion. Glimpses of army duty and camp life during the Second World War are dispersed in Lear's affectionate letters to his wife. Over the four year span he reveals the dangers of travel, his concerns for the welfare of his family, worry for the civilians of Plymouth during the Blitz. He shares both heart-warming and distressing encounters with some of the local folks in Ireland.

Album limité a 400 exemplaires tous numérotes. Exemplaire N. 52 / Album composto da 68 caricature originali, raggruppate in 61 tavole litografiche sciolte, colorate a gouache (cm 37x28). Prefazione di Marcel Achard. Tavola descrittiva coi nomi degli artisti rappresentati. Esemplare n. 52. Senza data. 4to (cm 38x29). pp. 8 + tavole. Dedica e firma autografe dell'Artista alla seconda pagina (Inscribed and signed by the Artist). Ottimo (Fine). . Edizione originale di 400 esemplari. .
