A large cloth-bound album (300 x 385 mm) containing 478 original vintage gelatin silver photographs in three main sequences. One important series comprises approximately 240 images (85 x 135 mm) relating to a journey by air in VH-UZU, the first Cessna imported into Australia (by MacRobertson Miller Aviation Company; it was registered on 2 September 1937)

      - Several photographs that suggest an approximate date clearly show other unique aircraft; one of these is VH-UZX. There were in fact two aircraft registered VH-UZX in Australia. The first one, a DH84 Dragon, crashed at Croydon in the UK on 26 February 1938 before delivery to Australia. The second one, a DH86 Express, was registered in Sydney on 17 July 1940 to W.R. Carpenter & Co. Ltd.; it was impressed by the Commonwealth Government on 27 December 1940. It is clearly in civilian use in this album, making the latter part of 1940 a likely date. Adding weight to this, VH-UZU 'was used on the Adelaide-Whyalla run until late 1939 when it was flown to Perth and used by MacRobertson Miller Airlines on services in Western Australia' ('Airliners' website). There are seven photographs of aeroplanes (mainly VH-UZU), 76 photographs taken on the ground, and 154 from the air. Identifiable or named places range from the Cairns Golf Links, to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Norseman Hotel, but the bulk of the aerial views are interesting landscape features and developed areas in regional Australia. Featured in a few photographs are the passenger and pilot of VH-UZU; on the basis of one of them, we seriously suggest that Captain Horrie Miller himself is the pilot. Another important series includes approximately 85 photographs (generally 65 x 90 mm or the reverse) of mining activities. Some feature large operations, including twelve taken underground, but the best of them depict much more small-scale activity. Captions in pencil on the verso of some images, dated March 1935, identify alluvial diggings and the WMC drill at Yellowdine (approximately 400 kms east of Perth; gold was discovered in the region in 1934). Londonderry, near Coolgardie, is also featured. Conditions depicted are at best basic, at times primitive, and ensure that these images of the early days of the development of a goldfield are nothing less than fascinating. At the beginning of the album there are 88 snapshots (110 x 70 mm or the reverse, printed by 'Q'land Camera Co., Cairns') of tourist attractions in (presumably) the Cairns region.          [The complete Hornblower:]

London: Michael Joseph,, 1937–67. The Happy Return (1937); A Ship of the Line (1938); Flying Colours (1938); The Commodore (1945); Lord Hornblower (1946); Mr Midshipman Hornblower (1950); Lieutenant Hornblower (1952); Hornblower and the Atropos (1953); Hornblower in the West Indies (1958); Hornblower and the Hotspur (1962); Hornblower and The Crisis (1967). 11 works, octavo. Recent dark blue morocco, titles and gilt ship decoration to spines, single gilt rule to boards, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Some minor spotting to a few leaves, an excellent set. First editions, first impressions. Forester (real name Cecil Smith) was called to Hollywood to write a pirate film, working under Arthur Hornblower. However, before they had finished the script, another studio released Captain Blood, starring Errol Flynn, and using the same historical incidents that they had counted on. Rather than seeking another position, hounded by the prospect of a paternity suit, Forester jumped aboard a cargo boat bound for home. Another passenger was the photographer Barbara Sutro. In the voyage, he took a one-day cruise around the Gulf of Fonseca in the ship's motor lifeboat, and by the end of the voyage he had a new novel worked out, The Happy Return, with its characters Hornblower, Bush, and Lady Barbara. Hornblower, with all his human indecisiveness and cross-grainedness, was Forester as he wished he had the courage to be, and Forester wrote about Hornblower again and again. This set includes his unfinished novel Hornblower and The Crisis.

The Lowndes Letters: two autograph letters signed to Robert W. Lowndes.

Providence, Rhode Island: 20 January and 20 February 1937 - Two autograph letters signed in the hand of H. P. Lovecraft, respectively 6pp and 10pp written in blue ink in a small but clear hand over 3 and 5 leaves (225 x 140 mm), each with the original envelope addressed in Lovecraft's hand to Robert W. Lowndes in Connecticut, respectively franked 20 January and 20 February 1937, and both additionally signed with Lovecraft's name and Rhode Island return address. Housed together in a black morocco album with acetate sleeves for each leaf/envelope, titles silver to spine, Cthulhuan tentacles in green morocco onlay across spine and sides, stars tooled to both sides in silver, gilt marbled endpapers. This in a green cloth slipcase. Together with Crypt of Cthulhu #62 magazine, 1989, octavo with original illustrated wrappers. Usual folds with occasional mild tanning, one envelope with gear and tape repair, but mostly in excellent condition. H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937), in the months before his death, writes two exceptionally long letters in response to youthful fan-mail from budding writer Robert A. W. Lowndes (1916-1998), replying to Lowndes's request for help in his literary endeavours with extraordinary generosity and thoughtful encouragement. The letters encompass no less than sixteen pages of tight script, with Lovecraft expositing in full his literary tastes, philosophy of life, and theory of horror. He opens his letter with charming self effacement, first of all apologising for "my lousy scrawl - but I have an utter detestation of the typing process - which fatigues and enervates me oppressively. I never use the machine except under compulsion", and describing himself as "just another dub pottering around the edge of aesthetic problems too large for him". He goes on to encourage and guide Lowndes in "your literary diet" which "would seem to be all in the right direction for one as artistically sensitive, & destined for expression on his own book, as you appear to be. I assume that you realise the abysmal inferiority of the pulp-magazine writers (among them titans like Clark Ashton Smith & the late Robert E. Howard stand out as notable exceptions) as compared with real authors of fantasy like Poe, Algernon Blackwood, Arthur Machen, Dunsany, Walter de la Mare, M. R. James & so on - or with the few real authors (H. G. Wells, S. Fowler Wright, W. Olaf Stapleton. I can think of no more!) who have produced 'science fiction' of adult calibre. The less one reads of the magazine junk, the better for his taste & style. If you are not already familiar with the principal classics of fantastic literature I'd be glad to let you have the names of some books which I look upon as almost 'required reading'." This offer of a Lovecraftian reading list was evidently pounced upon in Lowndes's reply, as it is given in full in his February letter, thus (for the record): "And now for those recommendations I spoke of. If you haven't read Blackwood, you have a treat ahead of you - but be sure to choose his best rather than worst products, since he is a curiously & bewilderingly uneven author. Some of his tales are among the finest products of the fantastic imagination - unarguably acute & serious studies of the deep-seated human emotions & processes which produce the illusion of the unreal - yet other things of his almost touch the nadir of bathos, sentimentality, & namby-pamby. Read Incredible Adventures of John Silence - Physician Extraordinary - & get hold of some collection containing the short stories The Willows & The Wendigo. But don't waste time on The Wave, Tongues of Fire, The Extra Day, & The Garden of Survival. If you like I can lend you John Silence, Willows & Wendigo. Machen is another revelation. Get hold of the Knopf edition of The House of Souls, which contains The White People & The Great God Pan. Read also The Hill of Dreams, though it is psychological rather than supernatural. Don't miss The Three Impostors, & The Terror is also worth going through. Almost anything by Machen's is worth readin [Attributes: Signed Copy]

         Death on the Nile

Collins, The Crime Club, London 1937 - 1st impression, 13 x 19cm orange cloth with black stamped titles to the spine, 284pp (4) publisher's advertisements. The spine is a little faded as is often the case with this book. The boards are a little marked mainly on the front which has 3 cup rings and a couple drip marks. The cloth has some rubbing particularly to the corners, two of which are rubbed through, and spine tips which have a little fraying at the head and three splits in the cloth of between 2mm and 1.5cm along the foot. The binding is firm and square. There are a couple of drip marks to the fore edge of the text block but these do not impinge inside the book, which is very clean and bright without spotting or finger marks. The only slight blemishes appear to be a neat ownership name to the front free endpaper, a corner crease and a 3mm closed tear to one page. In all, a very bright survivor of one of Agatha Christies most popular works. If you have any questions or require further images please do not hesitate to ask.          The complete Hornblower:] The Happy Return (1937); A Ship of the Line (1938); Flying Colours (1938); The Commodore (1945); Lord Hornblower (1946); Mr Midshipman Hornblower (1950); Lieutenant Hornblower (1952); Hornblower and the Atropos (1953); Hornblower in the West Indies (1958); Hornblower and the Hotspur (1962); Hornblower and The Crisis (1967).

London: Michael Joseph, 1937–67 - 11 works, octavo. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club

London: Chapman & Hall 1937 - First edition, first printing, two of the first issue points called for by Smith: loose type in "holding" on p. 260 and "S. Veller" uncorrected on p. 342. Illustrations by Robert Seymour, Robert William Buss, and Hablot Knight Browne. Contemporary three-quarter tan calf with five raised bands and two spine labels, red and green, over mutli-colored marbled paper-covered boards, light brown endpapers, top edge stained brown, other edges speckled in red. Very good or better with some rubbing to boards, especially around spine and other extremities, plates with foxing as usual, text block generally clean, previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Overall an attractive copy. Smith I, 3. The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was originally published serially in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly installments from April 1836 - November 1837. This first edition was published shortly after on November 17, 1837. The project was originally conceived by illustrator Robert Seymour, who envisioned a series of humorous stories about the adventures of amateur Cockney sportsmen. Chapman and Hall employed Dickens to create a cohesive narrative that provided a background story for the illustrations. However, the bold young writer purportedly wrote with little regard to the illustrations, even making suggestions for their alterations at times, much to Seymour's displeasure. After the second installment was completed, Seymour committed suicide and was replaced in the Pickwick project by Robert Buss. However, Dickens found Buss' work unfavorable, and Hablot Knight Browne ("Phiz"), who would continue to illustrate many of Dickens' subsequent novels, took over as the Pickwick illustrator. Smith comments on the complicated history of Pickwick's illustration: "The history of the creation of the plates is perhaps as complex as that of the printing of the text, and different states of a plate and different plates for the same subject may vary from one bound copy to another seldom, in fact, are all of the plates located in copies in the original cloth or rebound ones," which he partially attributes to the lack of a list of illustrations.
